Fire at Stamford High ruled arson with three separate starts

A May 5 blaze at Stamford High School caused an estimated 30 000 plus in damage and was deemed arson by fire investigators after finding evidence of separate fires in three rooms. The Stamford Fire Marshall and Abilene and state marshalls conducted the investigation. The fire damaged a downstairs teachers lounge and a classroom with extensive smoke throughout. The school board hired an Abilene architectural firm to draft specs and oversee repairs while classes continue elsewhere.

Trinity Baptist Church Schedules Vacation Bible School

Trinity Baptist Church at 1027 E Vanderbilt will host Vacation Bible School May 26 30 with daily sessions 9 to 11 am. Registration is 9 am Saturday May 24 at the church. Director Ruby Lee Rister notes many opportunities for spiritual and moral growth for children.

Stamford Business and Professional Women members travel to the state convention in Dallas June 6 to 8. Judy Lowe represents the local club and District 7 as Young Career Woman and will address judges and attendees. Delegates include Mrs. Bill Koon and Mrs. Cliff Goodrich.

Local horse clinic to be hosted by Stamford group

Stamford Junior Sheriff's Posse and county Extension agents plan the Rolling Plains Horsemanship Clinic at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Rodeo Grounds May 29 to 31. Fees are 1.50 daily for stalls. Baccalaureate services for Lueders Avoca High School will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday May 18 in the Lueders cafetorium. Rev. Bill Hubbard pastor of the Lueders Methodist church will speak. Special music by Birger Haterius.

Baccalaureate planned Sunday for '75 SHS graduating class

Stamford High School schedules its 1975 baccalaureate for May 18 at 8 p m in the auditorium. The service previews the May 22 commencement with a Mendelssohn processional, scripture, sermon by Dr. Jim Enfield of Baylor, and Elgar recessional. Participants include Debra Dobbins Brenda Bragg Clark Terrell Barry Owens and Cynthia Wimberly.

Braves Stay Undefeated With 14 3 Victory Over Cardinals

On Tuesday May 13 the Braves defeated the Cardinals 14 to 3. Mike Cox pitched for the Braves and collected a double with Cox Gomez Olson Garcia Cedillo among five Braves with hits while Trussell Thane and Richard Johnson pitched for the Cardinals. Dodgers beat Red Sox 19 13 in the other game with John Mendez Scooter Ivy Mario Moreno Ty Gross among Dodgers pitchers and Gardner hitting three doubles. Standings after four games show both teams in early contention.

Ericksdahl History Book Published by Bethel Church

The Historical Society of Bethel Lutheran Church published a history of Ericksdahl and the Bethel congregation begun in 1968. Written mainly by Bertil Youngquist, the book includes Swedish to English translations, community stories, and a church directory. It sells for 5 dollars at Sanders Book Store in Abilene and Stamford American and Blackstock Studio in Stamford.

Moonlight Sale Planned Friday Opens Local Shops

Stamford businesses will stay open from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday for a Moonlight Sale with many values. Square dancing will fill the street and Jaycees will set up concessions for shoppers.

The regular shot clinic runs next Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Library building on East McHarg. Nurses from Stamford Memorial Hospital supervise the clinic upstairs in the library.

Abilene Golfer Captures Stamford Invitational Title

Abilene golfer Paul Stuerzenberger shot 70 in the final 18 holes to win the Stamford Invitational. He had trailed by two strokes entering the final round and posted a 68 to secure victory in the championship flight. James Waggoner won the first flight by one stroke over Joe Waggoner. Reggie Howell took the second flight with 154, two ahead of Homer Johnson. Roy Moritz led the fourth flight by three strokes with 165, topping Bill Reed. Ron Peoples won the fourth flight with a 174.

Lueders Avoca FFA held its annual banquet with top honors to Jimmy Norwood Star Chapter Farmer Keith Clifton Star Green hand and Mike Simpson Star Lone Star Farmer Norwood earned beef production and soil water recognition Clifton led vocational agriculture studies Simpson received swine honors Other awards went to Bobby Beaty Don Jones John Trice Monroe Burkman and Christy Lindsey Joe Alaniz plus John Trice for higher IA levels The event featured speaker Bennett Cook Area 11 president from Aspermont and introduced Patty Prince and Sally Scott as chapter and greenhand sweethearts
