Attendance and sermon notes from First Baptist Sunday service

Sam Morris reports a high attendance at First Baptist Church with 584 in Sunday School including 102 in the Young People's Department and 80 in the Business Men's Bible Class. Eleven o’clock preaching drew an overflowing crowd for a sermon on Hitch Hikers on the Road to Heaven.

Kindergarten Pupils Presented at Central Christian Church

Mrs Anna Dial presented her Kindergarten pupils Sunday evening at Central Christian Church in a springtime program. Pupils included Bobby Gressett Eva Jo Upshaw Bobby Huston Mary Ellen Crump Martha Baird Elizabeth Cope Eugene Johnson Joyce Short Ellen Mulling Leon McCann Edward Rosenwasser Jo Ann Russel Monte Knutson. The program featured songs prayers scripture readings and readings by the children and ended with a musical reading and a sermon on Joseph by Rev Robie Beaman with Moses planned for next Sunday.

Stamford Pupils Enter National Piano Tournament

Mrs. C. M. Lester enters thirteen pupils in the National Piano Tournament at Simmons University Abilene Thursday through Saturday. Earl Allison directs. Mae Jones Monell Melodese Thomas will compete in the high meat division Friday. Mother's Day Service Planned at St John’s Church

A special Mother's Day program will be held at St John’s Methodist Church Sunday morning with Rev. Caradine R. Hooton preaching. He notes he is at the General Conference of the Southern Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, calling it the most thrilling session.

Needles Opens Stamford Tire Hub for 25 Texas Counties

B E Needles has opened a combined wholesale and retail tire store in Stamford to serve 25 Texas counties and parts of Oklahoma. A car load of tires worth about 8000 arrived Tuesday and another is en route. The Stamford center joins Lubbock and San Angelo as key distribution hubs, with 24 counties served from Lubbock last year.

Walther League Plans Abilene Rally No Local Services

Happy Kitchen School of Cookery Opens at City Auditorium

Mrs Beulah Mackay Yates famed food economist will open the three day Happy Kitchen School of Cookery at 2 PM Monday in City Auditorium. The event, a Stamford American and sponsor program, offers daily demonstrations of forty distinct dishes with tips on menus, baking, and using spices.

Code Price List On Printing Put Into Effect In Stamford

The National Graphic Arts Coordinating Committee issued a price schedule under the Graphic Arts Code received in Stamford Tuesday and put into effect at two local printing establishments Wednesday morning. Prices are generally higher than in recent years, and the code also includes wage and hour provisions that were enacted several weeks earlier.

Daylight Robbers Steal Cash From Stamford Firms

Two Stamford businesses were robbed in daylight within a day with about 35 to 40 dollars taken from cash, silver and some checks left behind. The Waples Platter Co warehouse and Stamford Motor Company suffered losses. police suspect the same thief, familiar with the firms, acted while workers were away.

Two Speakers Named for Lueders Baptist Encampment

Dr J Howard Williams Texas Baptists Secretary will lead first four days starting July 12. Dr C E Mathews Travis Baptist Fort Worth will arrive July 16 and direct services through July 22. Daily program mirrors prior years with 8 to 10 am Sunday School and W M A, morning service, lunch break, quiet hour, afternoon recreation, evening services 8 to 9 pm, then recreation until 10 pm. Luncheon Planned for Stamford Yard Contestants

Miss Norfleet Grimes, noted home beautification worker, will address the Stamford Yard and Garden Contest participants at a Monday noon luncheon in the Stamford Inn banquet room. The event, postponed from last week, features 37 entries expected to gain tips from her lecture.

The Corinth Home Demonstration Club met at Mrs. George Ludecke's home on May 1 with Miss Vasek showing foundation patterns. Members discussed desserts for tall occasions and enjoyed a recreation hour. New members and guests were listed and the next meeting set for May 15 at Miss Vasek's home.

Piggly Wiggly Store Reopens After Six Week Remodel

The Piggly Wiggly in Cape completed a six week interior remodel by employees carpenters and painters. A new color scheme cream and orange creates a cool inviting look with refined woodwork display tables and better floor space. A new refrigerator display counter steam table ice water fountain and rearranged fruit and vegetable area improve access and appeal. Hospital Day Open House At Stamford Sanitarium

The Stamford Sanitarium holds an open house Saturday from 2 to 5 p m to celebrate Florence Nightingale's birthday. A musical program will be presented and tours of hospital departments offered. Visitors will see the staff and equipment including oxygen tents and X ray tools.

Reunion Building Under Way After Contract Let

Texas Cowboy Reunion Association moves forward with ground breaking after Ed Jones won the contract last Friday. Eight men work on foundations for the large room and front terrace to meet a July 2 3 4 reunion. Plans include a dining room kitchen lounges later, native stone exterior and a band of cattle brands around the front. Foundations to be finished this week with about 3500 needed. Site south of the arena near Anson highway. front faces north toward arena camp grounds and corrals.

Beautification Work Wrapped Up For This Season

The Highway Beautification program committees completed spring to fall improvements in and near the city. Mrs. L. M. York reported transplanting plants and praised Mrs. Tom Turner for vivid beds between the viaduct and city limits. The effort included plantings at City Hall, bluebonnets, cacti, roses and cannas, and urged public responsibility for highway greenery.
