Cemetery fund exceeds ten thousand in Highland drive

The Highland Improvement Fund surpasses $10,192.50 with the new water pipeline paid for and funds to upgrade cemetery entrances. Donors listed include Lucia Brewington, Mr and Mrs Amado Jasso, and Stamford Lions Club among others. box 1205 remains open for continued gifts as the fund plans further site improvements in Stamford.

School Equalization Board Sets Two June Meetings

Stamford school board fixed the June 18 session 3 30 to 5 p m and June 20 9 a m to 2 p m for the board of equalization. Don Walker and Don Starr named as members with W C Thompson as alternate. One more member needed. Passing grade for students raised to 70 percent from fall. Resignations accepted for Ann Pence and Beverly Mullen. Three Tri County resource teachers hired pending funding and assignment. New Stamford staff include Nancy Anderson Sandra Pullig Peggy Schroyer Wana Beth Cook and Kay Sprayberry.

Avoca Baptist Church Announces Spring Revival Week

Avoca Baptist Church will hold a spring revival May 11 to 17 led by Rev. Bob Cameron of First Baptist Church Milsap. Song leader Chuck Gafford Jr a Hardin-Simmons May graduate. Services 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. weekdays with preaching singing prayer and fellowship. Everyone is invited according to Rev Charles Gafford.

Long lived farmer Mrs. Bean hospital stay after fall

Josie Bean aged 90, a life long outdoorswoman with minimal prior illness, admitted after a kitchen fall caused a broken hip. She was born in Battle, McLennan County, married Joe Bean in Shackelford County, and has two children, six grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. She spent decades milking cows, tending gardens, and doing outdoor work before her hospitalization in April and is now recovering and planning to return home.

Stamford School Board hires architect for facilities study

Stamford school board hires Tommy Huckabee of Huckabee and Denham in Andrews to conduct a preliminary study of district facilities and prepare plans for board review in ten or three weeks. He will gather input from faculty administration and citizen advisory members to capture community needs and ideas.

Stamford city council members met with no business transacted and were reminded of a 6 15 p m meeting next Monday May 12 at city hall in Hamlin The council will sign a new water rate contract with Hamlin Centex Cablevision Corp manager Jerry Smith reported plans for a rate increase from 8 25 to 9 per month about a 3 percent yearly rise since 1978

Gillilan Wins Democratic Sheriff Candidacy in Jones County

In a four candidate race Sheriff Doyce Gillilan secured 53 percent with 1592 votes to lead the Jones County Democratic slate for sheriff. Incumbents for county commissions faced challenges while state races mirrored statewide trends with Gillilan defeating opponents in the primary and Carter leading the presidential straw vote locally.

Double Mountain District FFA Meeting Highlights

The Double Mountain District FFA met on May 1 in Jayton. Jim Muehlstein was chosen district secretary and Stamford Chapter Farmer, Joseph Vasek the Star Agri businessman, Pat Pierce runner up Lone Star Farmer, Ted Scarbrough earned a silver Public Speaking medal, Mark Golden in Star Greenhand, Kevin Wade named district State officer nominee, and four members had their Lone Star Farmer degree record books approved. All winners advance to the Area contest in San Angelo this Friday and Saturday.

LA student earns Doublemountain District Star Greenhand

Wendell Wood, 15, freshman of Lueders-Avoca High, is named Star Greenhand for Doublemountain District at a Jayton FFA meeting. He grows cotton and raises beef calves and dairy cows. He will enter the area contest May 9-10 in San Angelo. Also slated to apply for the Lone Star Degree is Ted Ford, 17, of Leeders. LA voting delegates to the area meeting are Robert Ivy and Jeff Agee.
