About 10000 baby bass were placed in a new lake on Paint Creek last week by a State Gen Pithound Oyster Commission representative from another state. The shipment of bass, described as about the size of goats, is the lake’s first stock and will be followed by more fish placements.

First 1953 Wheat Harvest Monday In Hamlin Area
J T Smith and son harvested an early wheat field from a 140 acre plot near Hamlin earning about ten bushels per acre with 16 percent moisture and No 1 grade valued at 2 07 per bushel. Officials note this as possibly the nation earliest harvest for 1953 though drought may limit further cutting for ten days. Nearby Jones and Haskell counties report seedings and expected yields far below normal due to dry conditions.

Jaw Bone of Prehistoric Elephant Found Near Avoca
A lower jaw fragment found in a gravel pit near Avoca by Fred Cummings of Baird is thought to belong to a mammoth. Teeth comparisons and a full animal photo suggest Columbi type elephant origin, with the site showing ancient sand and gravel layers. The bone pieces were moved to Avoca High School and then to Stamford area for study.

Lone Star Farmer Will Speak at EVA Father Son Banquet
