The Texas highway commission authorizes improvement of Stamford's Square to add parking. Mayor G. C. Carothers received a letter this week from Jake Roberts district engineer of Abilene outlining the plan and approval for the project.
The second Salk polio shot will be delayed until the vaccine arrives. Mrs. Clay Markham, city school nurse, said first and second graders already received the initial injection two weeks ago. The plan includes state funding for about $13,200 and city council action next Friday.
National Cotton Promotion week will be sponsored in Stamford by the Chamber of Commerce with a formal opening of Feldt Manufacturing company Saturday. Highlights include an implement end truck display and an all cotton style show. Committees and leaders include Lee Walker Bernard Buie W. J. Bryant Wade Watts Herman Cox L. L. Webb Lord Dennis Marvin Hinds Dewane Elliott Jack Mills Steve Bennett Lynn Gillespie and aides Mrs Jennie McDaniel R. S. Lew Bill Barnett Ben Bagwell Mrs Atha Allen.
Six members of the Stamford Junior Chamber of Commerce spent three days at the state convention in San Antonio. They attended clinics and discussion groups, heard lectures, and helped elect state officers and national directors. The inaugural banquet honored Ed Stumpf of Houston, incoming president, with Goodwin Simpson of Colorado City named region vice president. Local attendees included Jim Lindsey, Carnie Moritz, Warren Alberts, Herschel Kelley, Tommy Cooper and Bill McLean.
Glynn Medlin and Ernie Davis were named as Exchange club April boy and girl of the month and were guests at Friday lunch at Nat's Cafe.
Mr and Mrs Dudley Dun can Mr and Mrs C Potts and J E Carlton attended the District 8 VFW Encampment at Snyder. Mr Blanchard attended Saturday. Mr and Mrs Duncan named post commander and Stamford chapter president. Convention ran Saturday and Sunday with Abilene to host in fall.
The trial of J L Wood against the City of Stamford is scheduled for Monday in Haskell District Court. He seeks 4000 dollars for damages and 70 dollars per acre for 397.91 acres flooded by Lake Stamford plus 25 dollars per acre for 752.74 acres as flood easement, while the city offers 40 dollars per acre for land and 6 dollars per acre for easement. Also note Mike Carney, son of Mr and Mrs Gerald Carney, is receiving medical treatment at Stamford Sanitarium.
At a Tuesday night meeting Irene Stewart presided as the Woman's Forum outlined plans to acquire a property suitable for a clubhouse. A clubhouse board of directors was authorized with four member clubs providing three representatives each and a director at large, Mrs. C T Dodson chairing the committee. The Forum also plans incorporation with a 23 member board and reviewed the Baste pageant's financials and tentative plans for next year.
A light rain failed to dampen excitement at the annual May Fete at the High School stadium. Clowns performed a reverse bow finale as six performers presented a three ring circus style show with trained animals, trapeze acts, dancing, and a wild west segment. Dexter Plumlee led as ringmaster with George Morey as announcer.
William M. Steele 40, an experienced electrical worker, was electrocuted Wednesday while on a 35 foot pole on South Orient Street. He struck a 13 000 volt wire and died at Stamford Sanitarium after rescue efforts failed. Steele, from Denton, had lived with his wife at 510 East McHarg Avenue and worked for George Williams Construction Company in Abilene on a West Texas Utilities contract in Lueders.
Plans are nearly complete for the Vernon Chamber of Commerce annual banquet and city development meeting to be held Friday night May 20 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion venue. Kenneth L Teegarden will speak. Dorothy King and Jim Pollard with Pegg Campbell provide music. Tickets available at the Chamber office or via Sub-Deb club members. New directors Wade Watts Louis Blackstock Bob Bandeen Bland Harrison and Dr Harry Lee Hayes elected. The coming year officers to be announced at the banquet.
Mrs. Harold Foster of Stamford underwent an operation at the Stamford Sanitarium on Monday.
Feldt Manufacturing inaugurates its western wear factory in Stamford with a public open house Saturday. Ribbon cutting at 10:45 a.m. features Ray Griswam and Max Feldt with Mayor Carothers. Governor Shivers could not attend. Tours, fashion shows of Tex Tex garments, music by Stamford and Hardin Simmons bands, and 15 models highlight the day.
Will Rogers Jr of Beverly Hills California has been invited to the twenty fifth Texas Cowboy Reunion on July 1, 2 and 4 as guest of honor. The invitation, from President W G Swenson, cites his public service, newspaper work and film portrayal of his father. Rogers, a former congressman and publisher, resembles his father and attended the reunion in 1935.
A battered safe from the Old Glory post office was found near the Tank Creek bridge after a Monday night burglary. About $41 in money was taken and stamps were left behind. Two Old Glory businesses, A F Flowers Magnolia Service Station and the A L Flowers Grocery, were entered with $7 missing from the service station. the Flowers Grocery was not robbed.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce Athletic committee, chaired by Earl Kiser, met May 4 to finalize the Little League organization. About $500 has been raised to support the program, which was well received last year.
