Stamford Girls Relays to Feature Sixteen Teams

The second annual Stamford Girls Relays set for Saturday April 2 will include 16 schools led by Stamford. Competitors include McCaulley Newcastle Woodson Anson Baird Clyde Hamlin Jim Ned at Tuscola Knox City Breckenridge Merkel Olney Winters Wylie and Throckmorton. Field events start at 9 a.m. with jumps and discus, finals run all day ending with mile relays. Stamford coach Dorothy Anderson expects strong showings from Breckenridge and Paducah, defending Class A champions coached by Jud Parker, with the District 6-AA meet on April 14 at Ballinger.

Exchange Club Easter Egg Hunt Scheduled Tuesday

The annual Exchange Club Easter Egg Hunt will be held Tuesday April 5 in Bulldog Stadium. Oliver and Reynolds School students participate with Oliver students bused to the event. The hunt starts at 2 10 p.m.

City police officers named in civil suit

The City of Stamford and five police officers including four from Stamford are defendants in a $635000 civil suit filed in U S District Court in Abilene on March 29. The case by Pedro Alvarado alleges excessive force during a speeding arrest near Stamford and seeks damages for civil rights violations medical expenses pain and suffering permanent disfigurement and punitive damages.

Light voter turnout forecast for Stamford elections

Voters in Stamford and nearby areas will cast ballots Saturday in three elections for mayor, two city council seats, three school board posts, and four hospital district directors. Absentee ballots were few, signaling a small turnout, with polls at Youth Center and high school auditorium and hospital polls open 8 am to 7 pm.

Tornado siren tests begin as season opens in Stamford

With the approach of tornado season Stamford residents will hear the city's alert siren each Saturday starting April 2. Fire Chief Bill Lawson said the first test will sound at noon this Saturday but may be canceled if threatening weather. Tests will run weekly through the season.
