Weekend rainfall of 1.37 inches in Stamford ends a drought period, with Kirby Clayton of Jones County Extension noting the rain aids wheat and maize prospects. Additional showers in April are needed for cotton planting, while total area rainfall nears normal for the year despite five months of dryness.

He cites Stamford as a good place to raise a family and aims to improve streets water systems parks and cleanup of blighted properties with citizen input. The second annual Stamford Girls Relays set for Saturday April 2 will include 16 schools led by Stamford. Competitors include McCaulley Newcastle Woodson Anson Baird Clyde Hamlin Jim Ned at Tuscola Knox City Breckenridge Merkel Olney Winters Wylie and Throckmorton. Field events start at 9 a.m. with jumps and discus, finals run all day ending with mile relays. Stamford coach Dorothy Anderson expects strong showings from Breckenridge and Paducah, defending Class A champions coached by Jud Parker, with the District 6-AA meet on April 14 at Ballinger.
The fourth annual Bulldog Appreciation Day Barbecue will honor Stamford High School students in clubs and activities. Sweetwater businessman George Thompson will be guest speaker. Event May 3 at the high school. dinner at 6 p.m.. program at 7 p.m. Tickets $3.95.
The annual Exchange Club Easter Egg Hunt will be held Tuesday April 5 in Bulldog Stadium. Oliver and Reynolds School students participate with Oliver students bused to the event. The hunt starts at 2 10 p.m.
The City of Stamford and five police officers including four from Stamford are defendants in a $635000 civil suit filed in U S District Court in Abilene on March 29. The case by Pedro Alvarado alleges excessive force during a speeding arrest near Stamford and seeks damages for civil rights violations medical expenses pain and suffering permanent disfigurement and punitive damages.
Voters in Stamford and nearby areas will cast ballots Saturday in three elections for mayor, two city council seats, three school board posts, and four hospital district directors. Absentee ballots were few, signaling a small turnout, with polls at Youth Center and high school auditorium and hospital polls open 8 am to 7 pm.
With the approach of tornado season Stamford residents will hear the city's alert siren each Saturday starting April 2. Fire Chief Bill Lawson said the first test will sound at noon this Saturday but may be canceled if threatening weather. Tests will run weekly through the season.
Stamford High School's one act play The Marriage of Figaro advances to regional competition for the fifth year, sharing the district success with Ballinger's I Remember Mama. Leigh Davenport repeats as best actress, with Bunkley and Whitley named to the All Star Cast.
Two candidates Lynn White and Billy McKeever seek Place 5 on the Stamford County Line Independent School District board. White, 44, parter educator and farmer, cites service to Stamford schools. McKeever, 48, partner, seeks reelection to advance district projects and student preparation for the future.
