Prospectus is being prepared on the 1.5 million water bonds approved by Stamford voters in last Thursday’s election. Bids will be accepted after a date is set. The bonds fund a new water supply from Paint Creek to serve domestic needs, with a 60 000 acre foot lake and water sales to West Texas Utilities.
Ezekiel Samuel Waldrep 71, longtime railroad man, died at his home on Tuesday morning. Funeral held Wednesday at First Baptist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery. he served 42 years with Texas Central and MET. Survived by wife Mary Lou Huey Waldrep seven children two dozen grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. George Flournoy plans a trip to Lake Charles Louisiana to visit her son George Flournoy Jr and his family. During the visit he will take her along the Azalea Trail to Biloxi Mississippi and Mobile Alabama for about ten days to two weeks.
The City of Stamford started using a new South Bend street sweeper costing 5550 more than the traded old model bought secondhand from Longview in 1947 for 2614 delivered here. Spending compares December 1946 manual street cleanup and labor savings to justify the upgrade per City Manager Grady Bowdry.
J F Lindsey and his wife watched a small, duffle bag shaped object cross northward at sunset Sunday. They saw it for a few minutes before it disappeared into a black fleecy cloud. Lindsey speculated it could be a balloon but was unsure, unlike anything he had seen before.
Mrs Ray Cox has been hospitalized in the Stamford Sanitarium for several days of medical treatment.
April deadline for counting school children six before September 1, 1951. Mrs. Grady Bowdry conducts the census. Parents may call 1100 or see L. W. Johnson if children are not yet enumerated.
The annual Play Day, sponsored by the PTA, features a 9:30 parade and events for all ages. Activities include athletics contests like horse shoe, shot put, football throw, softball, races, pet parade, talent show, and prizes funded by local businesses.
Stamford and vicinity experienced a varied week with heat cold rain and wind. Monday rainfall reached 0.59 inches per the Cleburne Huston weather observer gauge. A sandstorm occurred Tuesday and temperatures ranged from the upper 20s to 90 degrees.
Mrs. Guy White was elected new president of Reynolds Street Parent-Teachers Association succeeding Mrs. H. D. Smith and was named district PTA convention delegate for the April 12 13 Lockney gathering.
A Stamford High School audience will hear a plan for a permanent public forum at an April 6 meeting. Rev. Hugo B B Haterius will preside and County Attorney C E Brownfield Jr will lead a discussion on national affairs and tax policy while citizens are urged to participate for wider involvement. Mrs H M Phillips is recovering from an operation at Stamford Sanitarium.
Stamford city council approved a 185 446 74 dollar budget for 1951 52 covering general operations and the water system project. The year opens with strong finances a cash balance of 38 450 in general funds and 36 000 in water and sewer funds. Estimated income totals include 151 437 from general sources and 113 445 from water and sewer, with taxes expected at 90 000 and other revenue from parking meters business licenses and fees.
Stamford parking meters have generated 26 706 dollars in 76 weeks since fall 1949 with a total installed cost of 29 431 25 dollars. The first collection began October 12 1949. The city saved about 900 dollars by paying off the meter company early with a 5 percent cash discount. After recovery the meters will add income to the general fund and help reduce city taxes.
Funeral service for Mrs J Jeffus former Sue Reeves McDonald was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Kinney Funeral chapel. She died Saturday in McKinney after months of declining health. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. She was born March 24 1897 in Bridgeport and died on her 54th birthday. Survived by husband Jett Jeffus a son Dr N F McDonald of Houston three daughters Mrs K Reynolds Conroe Mrs Mueek Lockhart and Mrs A B Johnson San Antonio and three grandchildren. Dr McDonald on emergency leave from Osaka Japan visited her bedside. Pallbearers included L Rose Phil Rush Garth McCallum Bill Warwick Grover Cooley and Rev Bourdon Smith Jr.
Mr and Mrs DEF Prewit hosted Rex Prewit a Texas University School of Medicine Galveston student and Shirley Darroch of Galveston along with their son Horace Lee Prewit of Hamlin for Easter weekend visits.
A porch light campaign in the city raised about $200 for the Red Cross. Workers went door to door in the residential section Monday night collecting donations where porch lights were on.
Voters will decide on April 3 for a new mayor police chief and one council seat. Five candidates seek police chief, two vie for mayor and two for the council post. Unopposed council incumbent George Smith seeks re election. Polls open 8 a m to 6 p m with Mrs Jack Jones as election judge.
Mrs. Dick Carson, previously vice president, was elected president of the Oliver Street Parent-Teachers Association on Thursday night March 20. New officers include Mrs. lL. Ro Rose as vice president, Mrs. Addie Mae Kennedy secretary, and Mrs. Elmer Boedeker treasurer. Supt L W Johnson spoke on cultivating a taste for the good in children.
Claude Leroy Williams 48 died Monday at Stamford Sanitarium where he had been a patient since February 10. Funeral at Avoca Methodist Church with Rev. Billy Wilkerson and others officiating. Burial at Hog Valley cemetery near Rising Star. Survivors include his wife Willie Mae, two sons Marvin J and Max, daughter Thersa, and his parents and siblings.
Ray Cox, student at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, was named associate pastor at St John’s Methodist Church. He will preach the 7:30 Sunday service April 1, continuing a Luke 15 study begun 14 Sundays ago. The service, broadcast at 7:50 and 8:30, features Youth Choir music and congregational singing as visitors attend weekly.
Principal T R Tin sley announced upcoming events at Stamford High School. The Junior Class play runs April 19 and 20. The Junior Senior banquet is April 27. The Father-Son banquet for the Vocational Agriculture class is May 11. Dramatic Club plays occur May 19 and 11.
Mrs M Robertson returns from an 18 day stay in Sherman with her sister Mrs W L Ramsey and Mr Ramsey. Mrs Ramsey has been ill but is improved.
Three youths from the region, a 16-year-old Lueders resident and two 12-year-old Stamford boys, were arrested in Ranger and returned to Stamford. The theft involved three cars, a centrifugal pump, and occurred after a car was abandoned near the State Theater. Charges will be filed in Jones and Stephens counties.
Stamford High School senior class staged three one act plays over Monday and Tuesday to a packed auditorium. Director Mrs. John Dyer received a stage gift with orchids as thanks. class president Jerome Cornelius chaired and thanked local merchants. Cast changes included Leon Wisener replacing Jon Marc Johnson in Twelve O Clock Murder.
Rev James Rudolph Woodruff will be guest minister at St Johns Methodist Church at 10 50 a m Sunday April 1. He is professor at McMurry College Abilene and former World War II Air Force chaplain who studied in Glasgow. Charles F E Fike preaches revival at Spur. Woodruff recalls to Air Force effective June 1 1951.
Sue Humphrey a teacher at Albany and Jo Ann Humphrey a Baylor University student in Waco were home for the Faster holidays in a family visit.
Allene McNabb of North Texas State College Denton visited her parents Mr. and Mrs R E McNabb during the Easter holidays.
