Holy Week services planned by Stamford churches

Central Presbyterian Church hosts a week of Holy Week services from Monday to Thursday at 7:30 p.m. nightly with Maundy Thursday communion and a Good Friday community service at 7:30 p.m. sponsored by Stamford Ministerial Alliance with seven local ministers. A sunrise Easter Service at Bulldog Stadium on April 6 begins at 6:30 a.m. with several church leaders and Ron Meador delivering the message.

Jones County Democrats Set Ballot Spots for May Primary

The Jones County Democratic Executive Committee met March 17 in Anson to draw ballot positions for the May 3 Democratic Primary. Countywide sheriff race lists Erwin, Gillilan, Greenwood, Jordan. precinct 1 commissioner Moore and Lee. precinct 3 commissioner Hay and Doty. Absentee voters must register by March 14 and voters by April 2. A training session for precinct chairs and several county committees is scheduled for April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Haskell National Bank.

Highland Cemetery Fund Reaches 707 50 in First Week

The Highland Improvement Fund reports 707.50 raised toward a 10000 goal for Highland Memorial Cemetery projects and a 6000 target for a water line. Donations include individuals and estates such as Mr and Mrs H P Austin 20 and The Highs 100. Donations may be mailed to Box 1205 Stamford Texas 79553 with anonymous options.

Agri Fuel plant near Stamford advances plans for alcohol output

Agri Fuel of Stamford Inc moves a 40 by 40 foot alcohol plant to FM 2834 near Stamford Cotton Oil Mill west of the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. The cooperative of 40 stockholders expects production in two weeks with a 300 gallon weekly start and later 30 gallons per hour, using 180 to 190 proof alcohol. Permits, including waterline access under nearby tracks and state and federal approvals, are the main hold up. Initial output will serve stockholders, with mash sold as cattle feed, and expansion may bring 24 hour operation and a federal grant consideration.

Veteran Firebelle Honored in Stamford Fish Fry

Stamford Fire Department and Firebelles honored Effie Lawson for 58 years of service with a framed certificate presented by Lee Dickerson during a Monday night fish fry. About 55 firefighters, Firebelles, volunteers, and children attended at the fire station, with catfish, fries, puffs, cole slaw, tea, and desserts served.

Water and power curtailed in Stamford area

Stamford residents faced brief water and electricity outages last week. An 18 inch Lake Stamford water line leak near FM 600 and FM 2976 caused limited supply until repairs Friday evening. A Dallas crew replaced the main valve after a small lake pump aided pressure relief. Power failure Sunday morning started when a transmission pole between Anson and Hamlin caught fire, taking 28 minutes to restore service to Stamford Anson Hamlin and nearby communities.

Stamford riders gather as spring brings horsemen together for the annual Stamford Junior Sheriff Posse meeting at 7 p.m. in the Lions Club building on the east side of the square. All members prospective members and associates are urged to attend to outline upcoming events.

Stamford Civil Defense Siren Test Schedule Announced

Stamford will begin weekly siren testing for tornado warnings starting April 5 at noon. Tests will occur each Saturday at noon unless weather is inclement. In a real alert the sirens will sound followed by an all clear signal when danger passes.

Absentee voting remains open in Stamford elections

Absentee voting is still open in Stamford city school and hospital elections. As of Wednesday morning no ballots had been cast yet. Absentee voting will end Tuesday, April 1.

Haterius to head United Way drive in Stamford

Birger Haterius was named drive chairman and Frankie Dickerson chosen as United Way president for the 1980 campaign at a Stamford board meeting last Friday. Charlie Vasek was reelected secretary. Optimist Club charter meeting set for April 10

An organizational meeting targets chartering a local Optimist Club by April 10. A special membership drive is set for Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. in the Stamford Electric Cooperative meeting room with Don Scott and a Sweetwater club committee present to guide the process.
