Mrs C E Ball of Hamlin well known for pasty reviews of current books will present Steinbeck s The Moon is Down for the Pierian Club in an event to be held at : p m on the announced date. A guest day and tea will follow with Co Bill Hatcher, president, announcing details. Mrs J Thos Davis of Stephen ville, president of the First district, was to meet with the group last week but travel congestion caused cancellation.
Twenty three members attended a dinner hosted by the Business and Professional Women's Club at the home economical cottage. A book review scheduled for Thursday night was postponed to the next meeting on April 1.
Emmett Young son of Rev. and Mrs. 5S. H. Young left Wednesday for San Diego to report for duty with the United States Marines. He is a Stamford High School graduate and part of a family with several members already serving, including Cpl. R. L. Shipp at Camp Crowder, Pfc. Carl Young at Camp Adair, and Lieut. Horace Young at Fort Monmouth.
George Davis who served as comptroller at the Stamford Flying School has resigned. Frank Harrison formerly of Del Rio takes his place. His family will join him later as they pursue B and H stores and Dallas markets buying merchandise for the H Shop.
Stamford residents contribute 3627 to the Red Cross War Fund through Wednesday afternoon. Stamford chairman A M G Swenson notes civilian personnel at Stamford Flying School gave 301 percent, and many donors are listed as contributions continue to arrive. Lula Mae Starnes, Avoca High School teacher, visited relatives here over the weekend.
Thirty three towns in Jones County report Red Cross contributions totaling 10013.26 under district clerk Robert Cross 1943 war fund chairman. Stamford Hamlin and Anson districts show strong progress with several communities yet to report final totals expected next week.
Officers for the coming year were elected at the Young People’s meeting at Central Christian Church Sunday evening. Committee heads include Ernest It program Jean Parker member Velda Ambos recreation N Gray church activities Laura Son missionary Sponsors are Lieut and Mrs Rob Taylor. Meeting time is 7 to 8 p m each Sunday.
The Office of Price Administration released the official consumer point values to begin March 29. Meats fats and cheeses carry eight points per pound, canned fish seven, with 16 points per person weekly. Adjustments will follow as needed.
Stamford High School awarded certificates to third year Home Economics students for completing the American Red Cross nutrition course. Mrs. H taught the course, which was renewed for this year.
L. H. Terry awakened to a second floor blaze at the Britton hotel on East Reynolds Street and was rushed to Stamford Sanitarium. Manager Mrs. Britton received facial burns while attempting to combat the fire before firefighters arrived. The blaze was discovered at 6 25 a m and damaged mainly Terry's room and the upstairs hall. Insurance covered the building but not contents.
The Parent-Teachers Association of Oliver Street and Reynolds Street elected new officers on Wednesday. Reynolds: President Mrs J V Frizzell Jr. Vice President Mrs Jacua Hadesen. Oliver: President Mrs Natash. Secretary-Treasurer Mrs Ed Dodson. Program Chairman Mrs R R Baird. Attendees heard speeches by several members. Junior High choral numbers and piano solos featured. Attendance awards went to Mrs Annie Bounds's room with a $1 prize.
Stamford High School has chosen the three act mystery One Mad Night for its annual senior class play directed by Miss Maxine Rowland. Cast includes Bob Lee Joy Hughes James Friell Jean Parker Sarah McDonald Stan ley Swenson Bob Drummond Lois Nail oe Pendleton Nell tu y th and Dan.
Construction of 46 new meat units is planned in Stamford within the next three weeks after a Sunday visit by H B Steele assistant chief of the housing section. The Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce and Stamford Flying School officials secured 30 day options on 15 lots on the east end of Vanderbilt street. Swenson Land and Company supplied 14 of the lots. Build plans depend on architect designs and material. brick or native stone are possible. Local bids will be invited through the Chamber of Commerce.
The Aviation Cadets at Stamford Flying Initiated a Wednesday program March 17 with live broadcast on KRBC featuring Cadet Band and Richman. Cadet musicians and singers performed while four flight instructors and four cadets engaged in a battle of wits inviting Stamford residents to future field recreation events.
