Stamford School Board Reaffirms Multiple Teacher Contracts

At the March 3 meeting the Stamford school board renewed numerous contracts for teachers and staff. Allan Norman was named part time principal of Reynolds Elementary, succeeding Joe Bob Earles who moves to Oliver School next year replacing retiring Homer Merriott. Two contracts, Stephen Haterius and Matt Chalmers, were not renewed.

Stamford area adds eleventh hour candidate to school board Place 3

Edward Ekdahl filed late for Place 3 in Stamford school board joining Edward Moreno as rivals. Other races for mayor Place 4 and Place 5 remained unchanged with incumbents and new teachers hired under two year contracts and funding dependent positions. Absentee voting begins March 14 with deadlines March 29 and polls April 2 at the Youth Center and high school auditorium.

Oliver posters winners named in district contest

Nine Oliver School students advance after eliminations at the school for the California Creek Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest. Winners by room and by grade are listed, with top finishers advancing to represent Stamford in the statewide races.

Stamford Retail Trade Committee Sets Holidays and Plans

The Stamford Retail Trade Committee met to set the year's holidays and discuss promotions and programs. A spring sales festival will run March 31 to April 2. A Salesperson of the Month program and a buddy system to warn about bad checks were approved. Monthly meetings are planned with Ray Kinney as chairman.

Arrangements to be removed at Highland Memorial Cemetery

Cemetery superintendent Bill Lawson says floral tributes not in approved vases at Highland Memorial Cemetery will be moved this week to the cement storage house near the center. Unclaimed pieces will be deemed unwanted and disposed after a reasonable time. rules are available at his city hall office.

A fifth candidate joined the Lueders Avoca School Board race on March 2 for two vacancies on April 2. John D. Williams, Dewey Rister, Sheridan Olson, Jerry Watts and Betty Walker are filed. Stamford Baseball Program Seeks Volunteers For 1977

The 1977 Stamford Baseball Program begins with a work night tonight at 6 30 p m and a Saturday session at 1 p m at the Little League park. Parents and helpers are urged to bring hoes rakes mowers and other tools. Tommy Gray leads cleanup efforts as sign up runs March 19 26 at the Youth Center and April 2 at the Lions Club Building. Team tryouts occur April 4 5.

Stamford Council trims Lone Star Gas rate hike to 9.1 percent

Lone Star Gas Company faces a partial victory after Stamford city council directs an ordinance for a 9.1 percent increase instead of the proposed 13 percent. The council set first reading for the measure at the next meeting and left open the option to appeal if approved.

Bid Granted for Stamford School Electrical Work

Stamford school board accepted the Enis Bishop Electric bid for Oliver School electrical work at a regular meeting on Thursday March 3. The board drew lots for trustee election ballot places listing Edward Moreno Edward Ekdahl Place 4 J C Riddle Place Billy Joe McKeever Lynn White and authorized leasing two driver education cars from Arrow Ford Abilene at 100 dollars per month per car. Bill Preston reported a poll of teachers and students showing discipline in the high school is not bad.

Charges filed after high speed chase in Stamford area

19 year old Pedro Alvarado Jr. faces aggravated assault on a peace officer plus four misdemeanors after a Friday night chase from Stamford toward Anson. He allegedly struck Trooper Donald Van Zandt and fled officers while speeding over 120 mph. Alvarado remains hospitalized in Abilene. his family says officers used excessive force, which police deny.
