The Stamford seasonal slump in January and February yielded a 20 to 50 percent rise across merchandise classes compared to last year, with overall increases of 50 to 80 percent over January and February 1932. Building materials and hardware led, dry goods close behind, and luxuries and foods also recovered strongly.
A nationally known parachute jumper and barnstormer, Eddie Winfield, 19, toured the city overnight from Jersey City to El Paso. He shared stories with Chief Flournoy’s police force, recounting early jumps, Caterpillar Club and Practice Parachute Jumper’s Circle membership, and decades of daring feats despite injuries.
Sunday March 4 marked a joyful Home Coming at Central Christian Church with a full house and warm fellowship. Pastor Rev. Robert O Beaman spoke on Home Coming and Holy Communion was observed as a yearly memorial. Visitors from Austin Abilene Ballinger and other towns joined old members, while the pastor and wife received a salary increase and contract renewal.
Haynes and Cook Stamford announce the establishment of the Haynes Cook Automobile Company as the local Pontiac agent. The Hedberg Garage will house the display and service departments. Gordon Haynes and M H Cook lead the venture. A car load of new Pontiacs is on order with a sedan demonstrator on display.
The Bryant-Link Company opened a new Paducah Texas store last Friday and Saturday adding to its ten branches. Galen H. McKinney vice president noted the dry goods shop and large implement store with attractive fixtures. Edgar Johnson formerly Jayton manager leads the Paducah operation as the firm nears its fiftieth anniversary.
Kinney Furniture Store will occupy the Carlson Food Store building on the square. O A Kinney says remodeling starts Monday and Roy Carlson moves to the east side of the square Saturday night. Kinney bought the building from B H Baird and sons and will use both floors for furniture display with an interior overhaul, aiming for occupancy by the first of April.
Wanda Nell Terry died at the sanitarium at 8 45 p m Tuesday from bichloride or mercury poisoning after finding a box of bichloride tablets in a cabinet drawer. She was rushed to care but died. Funeral held at Kinney Funeral Chapel with burial in Highland cemetery. Survived by parents a brother and four grandparents.
H H Corley traced a junk metal theft to three Stamford men after J B Thornton reported $110 of cargo stolen from his truck headed to Fort Worth. Corley found loot parts east of Caddo and near Stamford. Ted Cravin, D C Newcomb confessed at Palo Pinto and implicated Frankie Griggs who planned the robbery and was jailed with the others.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Youngquist were held Sunday afternoon at 3 30 o clock at the Swedish Lutheran church conducted by Rev Hugo B Haterius. The service used both Swedish and English with favored hymns and piano organ music.
Rev Frank M Neal of Amarillo to open a three week revival at St John s Methodist Church Sunday morning assisted by pastor Rev C R Hooton. Neal arrives Saturday and will preach a Holy Spirit series. weekday services start 10 am and 7 30 pm. revival ends Easter Sunday April 1.
M. L. Hewett aged 67 died in Houston from heart trouble last Wednesday. A Saturday 11 a.m. funeral was held at the Methodist Church with Rev. C. R. Hooton officiating and burial in Highland Cemetery. Survivors include a widow Leta Brawley three brothers and a sister. pallbearers named.
The First Baptist Church pastor Rev. Sam Morris will present two sermons next Sunday night and morning. The morning talk discusses Psalm 9 on Representation Revelation and Redemption. The evening message asks eight Bible questions about the coming world dictator and his dominion.
The Stamford Yard and Garden Contest and the Highway Beautification program in Stamford will open April 15 as part of a coordinated city beautification effort. Entries must be filed at the Chamber of Commerce by April 15. last year’s participants automatically become members this year. The event features class divisions by plot size and has offered cash prizes and garden tools from local merchants.
The Stamford Chapter of the American Red Cross will start a First Aid course at Stamford High School Tuesday night March 13 at 7 30. Dr Dallas Southard will supervise with capable assistants. Classes meet each Tuesday and Friday at 7 30 pm open to all adults. Textbook cost 48 cents. Books available from Miss Lois Green or Lee Walker. Committee: Byron Lewis Fred Pauling and Lee Walker. Topics include stopping bleeding dressing wounds artificial respiration and life saving procedures.
E T Brown 78 died at his West McHarg avenue hotel Sunday at 11 am from heart disease, after a yearlong ailment. Funeral at St Johns Methodist Monday 1 30 pm. Burial Highland cemetery. Arrangements by W N Kinney Funeral Home. Survivors include widow Clara Brown two daughters Mrs Dudley Duncan Stamford and Mrs Tschabold Wichita Falls, four brothers and three sisters, and several named relatives.
Elliott John Anders aged 68 of Avoca died at his home from a heart attack. Funeral held at Avoca Baptist Church with burial in Spring Creek Cemetery. Survivors include Lucy his wife, two sons Fay and Sam, four daughters Vera Bunch Bernice McGee Crystal and Inez, seven grandchildren. He was born in Tennessee May 19 1865 and moved to Avoca in 1911 from Rising Star. Arrangements by W N Kinney Funeral Home.
West Texas Utilities Company sales force from Stamford attended the Frigidaire convention in Fort Worth. The meeting outlined advertising and selling plans for the coming year with over 500 salesmen from the region present. Stamford attendees included Ray Hill R S Cope C C Rosamond Bob Corley and Richard Dane.
A code meeting of the oil distributors of Jones county was held in the City Auditorium Tuesday evening with dealers from Stamford Hamlin Anson and Lueders present. FE R Pace presided as chairman.
Directors of the Texas Cowboy Reunion vote to buy the current grounds site as the permanent home and to fund a year round keeper. Judge Charles Coombes invited Speaker Coke Stevenson to ride in the parade, with the invitation entered into House minutes. Plans include new corrals, higher arena fencing, west grandstand reconstruction, and electric stars for night decorations.
G W Bennett 77 pioneer of Stamford died at his East Reynolds Street home after a brief illness. Funeral held at First Baptist Church with Rev Sam Morris and Rev M B Harris officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery. Survived by wife two sons Grover and Gordon two daughters and six grandchildren.
L W Johnson Stamford Public Schools superintendent returns home from Coeland Nebraska after attending the National Education Association department superintendent convent.
