Slim Pickens to Host July 2 Art Preview at Selmon Gallery

Slim Pickens will host a Collector's Preview on July 2 at the John Selmon Memorial Gallery in Stamford. The event precedes the second annual art exhibit and sale tied to the Texas Cowboy Reunion July 3 to 5, with more than 200 collectors expected. Pickens, a Hollywood veteran in his 25th show business year, will lead the preview from 7 to 10 p.m. with many national artists in attendance.

Texas Cowboy Reunion Sees 100 Sponsors Expected This Year

The Texas Cowboy Reunion committee reports over 75 cowgirl sponsor applications with more due before the rodeo opener. Secretary Mrs. Bo Jarred notes they may exceed 100 sponsors as 4 p.m. opening events draw interest. The event includes grand entries, barrel races, and a parade led by parade marshal Pickens.

Stamford Council Approves Paving Assessment Ordinance

Stamford city council in regular session last Friday closed an ordinance for paving northwest Stamford and Reynolds Street from Wetherbee to the city limits. Homeowners may pay by December 1 with eight percent interest over up to five years and no down payment. Residents urged adding more blocks, requiring 100 percent owner signatures to proceed. The council named Clifford Beggs and Norris Russell to two year terms on the Housing Authority and added Dorothy Pryor Johnnie Davids Larry Thomas and Don Harvey to the park board.

Avoca School Sets Homecoming With Bicentennial Theme

The Avoca School hosts a homecoming on July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Avoca School. No meal is planned but refreshments will be provided by local alumni. Invitations are not mailed locally. ex-students urged to attend. Old Avoca pictures and artifacts will be on display. Residents with items should contact Mrs. R. T. Taylor.

UW drives funds total for area groups under budget

Stamford United Way paid out 11995 of 14930 requested to 14 agencies, retaining about 600 for expenses. Total raised 12670 vs 15430 goal. Two groups received full requests, Texas Association for Mental Health and Texas United Community Service, the smallest grantors among the list.

Hale Wilder duo to perform sacred concert in Stamford

Robert Hale, leading bass baritone of the New York City Opera, and Dean Wilder of Westminster Choir College, debuting with NYC Opera as Jason in Medea, will present a sacred concert at Stamford High School Auditorium on Tuesday July 1 at 7 30 p m. Accompanist Ovid Young has joined their international tours since 1966 and the pair are acclaimed for sacred classics.

All-Star softball selections to be announced after state games

Stamford plans two All-Star Little League softball teams with a Saturday announcement at College Lake Park near the National Guard armory. The day features a Royals vs Rangerettes 1:30 p.m. opener, Rangerettes leading the 13-15 division, and 9-12 pairings Daisy Cutters vs Raiders at 3 p.m. followed by Mustangs vs Kittens at 4:30 p.m. Standings reflect last Saturday with Wednesday games not yet counted.
