A mobile unit from the State Health department offers chest X rays for tuberculosis at City Hall. People 15 and older register, remove pins, and pose for a quick X ray. The effort runs through the week with goals of full participation in Jones county.
Trash cleanup in Stamford postponed from Tuesday due to wet weather and moved to Friday afternoon starting at 3 30 p m. Volunteers and stores are asked to send helpers and trucks. The drive continues for another week with a goal of a 52 week effort to keep the city clean.
The First Institute on Parent Teacher Leadership for Areas 14 and 16 in Texas will be at Texas Technological College Lubbock June 21 and 22. Registration due by June 17 to Mrs. Moe West. The program includes workshops and gym activities led by Mrs. George Langford and Maurine Turner of Stamford.
Mrs Travis Bouchett general superintendent of the Vacation Bible School at St Jobs Methodist Church entertained the workers with a Coke party at her home Wednesday morning.

Lieut John B Garrett commander of Stamford Company M details two weeks of field training at Camp Hood in a June 13 1949 letter. He thanks Stamford employers for releasing men and lists trainees and camp life including tents bunks chow gas school passes post exchange and a night hike to wake sleepers. He notes an attempted call to attendance by ex National Guard officer Jerry Bright and defends the need for summer camp attendance under Texas military law.
Wheat harvest resumes in Stamford area as fields dry after heavy rains. Observers say yields lag 20 percent but should average 18 to 19 bushels per acre. Market weak but farmers prefer selling to government loans. local mill reports flour shipments to the government. Weather slows progress with needed sunshine and drying conditions ongoing.

Sue Humphrey daughter of Mr and Mrs A C Humphrey of this city earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech in Lubbock. Her major was English. She belonged to Las Chapparitas social club, the Gargoyle and the Press club. She transferred from Baylor University in spring 1946 and graduated Stamford High School in 1944.
The city finished its 1948 audit with bound volumes of the report. A M Higees performed the work at a total cost of 350 dollars.
County Judge Roger Garrett announced immediate action to secure right of way deeds for extending the farm-to-market road through Bricksdahl. The 23.8 mile Jones county project will widen from 60 to 80 feet, require additional land, and include fence relocation at county expense with farmers urged to donate land.
Modern Food Market on Rey nolds street and Albany highway marks its third anniversary. Owners Jack Fuqua and J H Blue have built Stamford’s first neighborhood retail venture as the town grows. The store features Vita-Rich iced vegetable display, home killed meats, a full meat department, and a large frozen foods case. Hank Hansen is part of the staff.

City Manager Grady Bowdrg reports May-June water and sewer receipts fell versus last year due to heavy rains. Total revenue loss reached 1915.67 dollars despite 1838 additional water customers and 132 more sewer customers.
Rotarians attended a tuberculosis X-ray education film shown with Jones county’s current campaign. J N Wilson acted as projectionist while Carl Cook outlined progress in summer recreation and softball park management. He noted daily turnout growth and upcoming incentives, with a swimming program to follow. Horace Attledg e presided in president O A Kinney’s absence.
Regular class work will be continued through Friday night at the School of Music held at First Baptist Church this week. A public program was cancelled to proceed with classes as planned.
Mrs. Orbie Lovvorn, critically injured in a February highway accident, moved from Fort Worth to her parents’ Luever home after two operations. Doctors say she is expected to walk again soon. Her husband, also injured, spent time in a jaw cast and is recovering. The couple, married a year, farm in Corinth community with family support and local neighbors aiding with their land recovery after the crash.
The City of Haskell sent a June 8 letter to Stamford Fire Chief Dick Rowland via Mayor Courtney Hunt thanking the department for sending a fire truck to Haskell on June 5 during a Wheatley building blaze. A $25 check to help defray expenses was enclosed.
The Daily Vacation Bible School at East McHarg Baptist Church ended Friday night after a series of sessions attended by children and families from the community. The church thanked volunteers and organizers for their work during the program.
Out-of-towners gathered for the wedding of Billie Jean Wedeking and Billy Joe MeKeever. Guests included numerous relatives from Albany Hamlin Rule and Anson. The event followed Waco commencement exercises with 160 enrolled and an open house showcasing handwork.
