Stamford citizens missed in the 1950 census have only a few days to be counted before the Abilene office closes on June 23. Preliminary figures show Stamford at 5,806 residents, up 20.7 percent from 4,810 in 1940, with only 25 extra people added through appeals before final figures.
A. C. Humphrey, general parade chairman, urged more decorated floats for the Texas Cowboy Reunion parade on July 1. He noted floats are far fewer than in past years and enhance the three day rodeo opening. Merchants and civic clubs were urged to enter floats with cash prizes offered to winners.
Taxpayers have paid delinquent city taxes in the past week per tax collector M. T. Smith. July 1 is the last day to pay without attorney fees. Last week 67 letters were mailed warning that taxes due by July 1 would be turned over to an attorney for collection.
J M Alexander reports the Stamford Cemetery Association needs 4000 for a new fence with 110 more received, bringing total to 780. Donations are taken at the Stamford American office or with association members, Grady Bowdry, treasurer, or at local funeral homes. Recent gifts include Mrs Ona High 50 dollars and Eager Feed Store 10 dollars.
State Theatre undertakes seating remodel with modern chairs and aisle lighting to help patrons find seats. Improvements include front lobby work and a two way drinking fountain and refreshment bar with cold drinks, candy and popcorn. Air conditioning guarantees a cool atmosphere for Hollywood productions.
Mrs Alyeon Haas and her son Jim mie took Mrs Pat Everett and daughter Jane and mother Mrs Ledbetter to Snyder to see Mr Everett. In Snyder Mrs Haas visited Mr and Mrs Jack Sparks.
City Manager Grady Bowdry said there is little chance to extend sewer service to the north side of town. A petition from area residents called for sewer lines and fire hydrants, but Bowdry cited sparse housing and current economics. He noted recent extensions to southeast town were funded by developers, not the city, and a lift pump would be needed to move sewage to the disposal plant.
The Stamford VFW has chosen delegates for the State VFW convention to be held in Houston from July 1 to July 5. Delegates include B. R. Webb, John Carlton, M. C. McKinley, W. E. Greene, and Paul Griggs with J. M. Terry and C. C. Allen as alternates. The VFW auxiliary named delegates Mrs. B. B. Webb and Mrs. M. Chic Kinley with Mrs. John Carlton as alternate.
James Corley, public relations man for the American National Livestock Association, visited Stamford on Wednesday to interview ranchers and local business men. He sought opinions on subsidies and the Brannan plan.
Governor Allan Shivers plans to attend the Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stamford on its opening day. He indicated a strong wish to return after his previous visit during the chamber of commerce annual meeting.
Mrs. C. W. May 79 died Tuesday at her home in Stamford after months of ill health. A charter member of the Tuxedo Methodist Church, she was buried in Fairview Cemetery with Kinney and Corley Funeral Home in charge. She was born in Wichita Kansas and married to Mr. May in Grapevine in 1897. Survived by husband Carl A. May a daughter Mrs. Ovie Mae Black a granddaughter Mrs. Paul Jones and four brothers and two sisters from several Texas cities.
Three Anson city officials led by Mayor Earl McCaleb will attend a Monday hearing before the Board of Water Engineers on Anson’s request to raise the city dam by three and a half feet and divert water from Thompson Creek. If granted, a contract to enlarge the lake will be let soon after.
Stamford's Chamber of Commerce building received a fresh interior with brighter curtains and new exterior paint. Cedar trees were removed, grass planted, and a white fence outlines the yard as plans for new trees arrive. Mrs. Ray Pannell is recovering from a major operation at Hendrick Memorial hospital in Abilene.
The City of Stamford faces a state board hearing in Austin on its plan to build a Paint Creek dam. Officials expect attendance from the city council mayor city manager city attorney and private citizens with representatives from Anson Hamlin and Abilene. Stamford seeks a 60 000 acre foot lake and 10 000 acre feet yearly water rights while opponents consider Bureau of Reclamation options.
Progress in opening South Ferguson Street across railroad tracks is reported by Lee Walker of the Chamber of Commerce. Fr. H Schaller and Hik Moyer note Katy and Wichita Valley Railroads are reviewing petitions signed by local business leaders. The 1947 setback cited the Y turnout point, now unused passenger service may end the relocation cost. Stamford will handle all grading work for the street.
Reginald Link is elected president of the Stamford Chapter of Future Farmers of America at the last regular meeting. Kenneth West becomes first vice president and Charles Anders second vice president. The chapter names Gerald Vask and Leon Wisner as officers along with others and plans a fishing trip to Possom Kingdom Dam on June 26 with a delegate to the State FFA convention on July 14 21. The delegate will be chosen at the next meeting on June 19.
K. Db. Coston has reopened his air conditioning and refrigeration service after selling his interest to Mrs. L. B. Tillotson Mrs. Weldon Walker. Walker underwent surgery at the Stamford Sanitarium Wednesday morning and is progressing well.
A public hearing on Stamford's proposed zoning ordinance is scheduled for Monday June 26 at 2 30 PM in City Hall. The plan divides the city into business residential and industrial zones with building types setback and use rules. City Manager Grady Bowers expects final passage by August mid after two council readings and newspaper publication.
Harvest progresses after weekend rains with 25 carloads of wheat shipped and 5 more loading. Grain yields run 15 to 22 bushels per acre, weighing 60 to 61 pounds per bushel and moisture 13 to 14.88. Market closed Tuesday at 1.92. Texas counties in the area report ample labor and equipment. northern territory mostly 18 to 55 percent complete except Foard at about 25 percent. Paul Frizell, Texas Tech student, spends ten weeks at home before ROTC camp in Colorado.
Central Presbyterian church schedules a Sunday worship at 11 A M led by Marion Condit a Trinity University student employed by the church. The church has had no pastor since Rev A G Fitzgerald resigned earlier and Condit will lead the service after Sunday school for the summer.
Stamford launches a week long city cleanup sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to improve sanitation and prevent disease. The program runs through Saturday with Jaycees meetings and membership drives noted at weekly events and at a Friday park ice cream gathering.
City Manager Grady Bowdry hopes weekly garbage pickups resume with the return of dry weather. Delays occurred when a crew member died in a traffic accident by Haskell and another was out due to a family death, plus heavy rains making alleys nearly impassable.
City completes sewer extensions and begins downtown relaying of water lines. Excavation on West McHarg near the hazy railroad crossing, replacing old mains with eight inch pipes for more water and better fire protection. Twenty one hydrants to be installed in city and new subdivisions. About five miles of lines to be laid. Material furnished by the city. contract to Wilks Lake and Steed of Tyler for 39 761 30 with 60 working days to complete.
Approximately 500 people attended the opening of Nat’s Cafe on the southeast square in Stamford. Owners Mr. and Mrs. N A Wash moved from a prior cafe location and offer fried chicken and flexible service in a modern interior with glass brick counters. The cafe operates daily from 5 AM to 1 AM and features a banquet room and catering for private events. Royce Smith, a Texas Tech student, has returned home.
The Stamford Memorial post VFW Auxiliary voted to sponsor five children in the summer youth program. At the clubhouse meeting twelve members including president Mrs. B R Webb attended. Members volunteered for tennis and swimming activities and a Camp Fire Girls weiner roast was planned at Buie's Park on Thursday June 8.
Police Chief G. G. Flourney reports an out of town driver left a nickel in an envelope as a courtesy ticket for over parking in Stamford. He notes outsiders often show better response to parking rules than local residents.
Stamford merchants announce a major two day Dollar Day event on June 16 and 17 with deep discounts. The American urges readers to check the next issue for bargains and asks advertisers to submit copy a day early, coordinating with John Bennett at No 6.
