Stamford Council Considers Telco Rate Increase Request
Donald Phyffe of South Western Bell told Stamford officials Friday that the company would withdraw its existing rate increase request and refile for a higher schedule if the council rejects the current proposal. He noted six wage increases since 1953, while council members pressed for assurances not to seek further raises within five years. Mayor Kelley and Councilman Watts debated practicality and future costs as no action was taken. Phyffe said the new rates would raise business phone bills by 1.50 monthly, 0.50 for one party lines, and 0.25 for two party lines, with rural rates unchanged, arguing the present 1.04% return on investment is insufficient compared with a projected 1.64% under the proposed schedule.
