Texas Democrats set four runoffs in second primary

Texas Democrats head to the polls Saturday for four runoff contests after the first primary produced no clear majority. Ralph Yarborough narrowly failed to secure dominance for the U S Senator nomination, while Barefoot Sanders of Dallas advances to the second primary.

Special election Tuesday for unexpired Senate term

A special election will be held Tuesday June 6 to fill the unexpired Senate term of David Ratliff in the old 24th district. Bill Tippen of Abilene is the sole ballot name, with the term ending this year and including Gov. Preston Smiths June 15 special session. Voting boxes are reduced to Stamford Anson and Hamlin. Stamford voting in the high school lobby.

Republican Governor Run-off Ballot At City Hall

A Republican run-off primary will be held at the city hall this Saturday per county chairman Lynn Gillespie. The sole local race is governor between Hank Grover and Al Fay. Charles Bragg will serve as election judge.

Ratliff Indicted on Theft and Conspiracy Charges in Texas

Sen. David Ratliff of Stam ford faces two counts after a Travis County grand jury indicted him for theft of a state warrant and conspiracy to commit theft. He allegedly received two warrants payable to Virginia Moser and conspired with Rep. John Allen to hire each other’s children without work. Other indictments include Rep. Tom Holmes for theft by false pretext and Rep. Hudson Moyer for paying a loan with postage stamps. Ratliff posted bonds of 5 000 each. resignations and district alignments followed. Graduation of Mark Kelley noted. Hamlin recreation program announced with required registrations.

Memorial Day Quiet in Stamford Despite Holiday Observance

Memorial Day weekend passed quietly in Stamford with police reporting no unusual trouble. City Judge Raymond Holla-baugh noted a calmer scene than normal as firemen handled routine grass and trash fires and ambulances made about one run per day. Veterans of Foreign Wars placed flags on graves at the local cemetery and the flag was half mast until noon before being raised.

Avoca High School outlines homecoming preparations with a planning meeting on Thursday June 1 at the Avoca High School Cafeteria. Frank Rennels chairs the committee with members including Bob Ed Taylor Wilburn Jensen Woodson Huffaker and several ladies serving on registration program welcoming exhibits concessions refreshment and related subcommittees.

Fire destroys Avoca post office and grocery store

An early morning blaze around 1 a.m. destroyed the Avoca Post Office and Jennings Grocery Store, with five people escaping the attached house unharmed. Fire departments from Stamford and Leeders Volunteer Fire Department fought the flames as postal officials arranged a mobile trailer to restore service by Thursday. The Avoca Baptist Church organized aid including a fund drive and gift shower for the Jennings family.

Presbyterian Church to ordain new pastor in Stamford

Larry Thomas, interim pastor at Central Presbyterian Church in Stamford, will be officially ordained at 7 p.m. Sunday in a ceremony conducted by the local Presbytery. The ordaining commission includes pastors from Abilene Haskell and Merkel, with a sermon by Dr. Robert Jones of Fort Worth. Larry, a Harvard government graduate and Southwestern Baptist Seminary graduate, has preached widely and is married to Janice Drake.
