Stamford Lodge No. 486 I O O F will initiate ten new members next Monday night in what may be the largest class for the local lodge. A watermelon feast follows at the home of Mr Small on East Hamilton Street on the lawn after the initiation at the Odd Fellows Hall. Rebekah lodge members and wives or lady friends of Odd Fellows are invited.
Brown's Cash Grocery on South Ferguson will build a brick structure measuring 25 by 80 feet on the second lot north of the present store. J. T. W. Brown owns the new lot adjoining the Methodist church property. T. S. Ross of Gorman is the contractor as construction begins this week.
The Yatapochon Camp Fire Group enjoyed a weiner roast and marshmallow toast at Mrs. Mahood's with games songs and a special supper. Munusaiga Camp Fire Girls held their first summer ceremonial with hosts Margaret Turner and Clarice Buie and a lengthy program of marches songs and initiations. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. King and son visited Mrs. King's father I. E. Macon for the weekend.
A four inch Humble pipeline is under construction from Shackelford County into eastern Jones County, connecting with Higgs and King wells. Fifty workers camp at Lueders, with oil shows reported at Woodson farm and E P Campbell No 1 Herndon near Anson as drilling continues to depths around 2600 feet.
Albany Golf Club defeated Stamford Golf Club on the home course 8 to 4 with two halved matches. Winners for Albany included Toodles Williams Jack Moore Frank Whitney Joe Lowery R E Nail Frank Cloud Walter Wood and Horace Sedwick Russ and Jennings Dodge and Baird halved. Stamford’s Budley Rains Budley Wheeler Burt King and Grady Bowdery won their matches. Rains posted the day’s low 77. The Albany club earns the 24 inch loving cup marking its second win over Stamford. Maudie Rambo and Jerry Hammett of Oakwood visited J D Rambo and family.
American Legion members and wives plan a watermelon feed at Lake No. 4 next Monday at 7 PM. A liberal supply of melons will be available and a large crowd is expected. Ex service men and wives or lady friends are invited, whether or not they are Legion or Auxiliary members.
Work on the Swenson Land and Cattle Company building at the northeast corner of the square is slated to begin next week. The stone and brick structure will house Swenson offices and a store. Final contractor papers have not been signed yet.
Rev. J W Moore returned from China spoke at First Baptist Church to a large audience last Sunday morning. He wore a Chinese costume given by converts and urged sending missionaries back to China. One conversion and five church additions were reported, with a baptismal service planned next Sunday night. The B Y P U had 68 attendees and youth groups stayed active through summer.
The Men's Brotherhood Sunday school class of St. John's Methodist Church and their spouses will hold a watermelon feed at Macon Park. Jess White heads arrangements and urges all members with wives or sweethearts to attend. The class has planned the event for weeks and anticipates a good time.
The regional encampment at Lueders opens today and runs through August 7 with Ed Shunaway ABilene in charge. Visitors from Stamford Abilene Moran Albany Haskell and Anson are expected. Stamford scouts will attend and Mrs E P McKinney and daughter Virginia depart for Breckenridge after their visit.
The Stamford Rotary Club will join the Boy Scouts at the Scout Encampment in Lueders next Tuesday evening, with Scouts providing food and program. Rotarians expected by 6 50 pm. This luncheon is a substitute for the regular Rotary meeting. The prior meeting featured A J Swenson's remarks on Europe and the Rotary convention at Ostend Belgium.
The Stamford library offers a Story Hour for youths on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4 50. Fifteen children have joined the free program of games songs and stories. Enrollments for the remainder of summer are welcome. Mrs W C Cannon returns home after a hospital stay while Mrs J H Rutherford visits Abilene briefly.
The Stamford Board of Trustees approves a September first opening for public schools with buildings ready and faculty assembled. Kindergarten first grade instruction is sanctioned on a private basis led by Mrs. N. S. Holland, while high school credits for State Department approved subjects increase to 2712 total credits.
The residence of W. G. Henderson on South Swenson avenue was practically destroyed by a Thursday morning fire. Part of the furniture was saved. Insurance on the house and furniture totaled $1000. M. Faverman traveled to Lubbock and Brownfield last week. Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Hague and their children are visiting in Cleburne.

Mrs Beulah Gould returns home from Dallas where she attended the funeral of her father. Miss Elsie Winkle of Hamlin was here Sunday.
Dirt was broken for the first gas main in Stamford in a simple ceremony marking the start of construction under the Stamford Gas Company franchise. Mayor Tayman and city officials helped break dirt as crowds gathered and the Chamber of Commerce secretary spoke. A crew of eight men continued digging with the first carload of pipe arriving from Wittenburg, Pa.
A social gathering at Mr afte Mee Ho J Pickel home featured parlor and lawn games including checkers and 42. Guests included Misses Cora and Clea Greenwood and a large list of local residents. Several visitors traveled to Italy and Dallas, with Mine Johanne Lee Cauthen, Doyel Price, and others noted.
Rev. and Mrs. Fred Rogers and daughter Misa Dorothy Bunkley Mrs. Oliver Crump Mrs. L B Parrh and children Mise Ruby Gould and Mise Lucille Adair came home last Thursday from a camping party at the Presbyterian Encampment in Buffalo Gap.
