Stamford votes no tax increase for the coming year despite reduced non tax revenue. Rate held at 1.25 per 100 valuation as City Manager Steenson notes anticipated losses of meter and farm rents totaling about 15 000. Economies urged with possible warrants for emergencies and a few public postings and farm leases approved.
Drought and a new water distribution line drive the city to the highest summer consumption on record. May to July pumped 35,791,600 gallons more than last year with June 12 line in service and June 20 to July 20 adding nine and a half million gallons. The month ending July 20 reached 48,746,500 gallons, the largest to date.
Camp Fire camp at Stamford Baptist Encampment opens Sunday afternoon with 6 girls ages 8 to 14 registered. Camp director Mrs. Gordon Wood says registration starts 1:30 p m and ends Friday after a family supper. Activities include outdoor cooking crafts swimming and badge work with several counselors and a nurse.
Irving P. Krick Inc of Denver will send Paul Caubin to explain rainfall enhancement methods at two meetings in Throckmorton courthouse at 10 a.m and Albany courthouse at 2 p.m on Friday July 27. Swenson Land and Cattle Co initiated the effort. area ranchers from Shackelford and adjoining counties may join if interest grows. A. M. G. Swenson announced the plan Wednesday afternoon.
Rain looked likely in Stamford but mostly missed the area. A trace fell Monday and Wednesday afternoons with isolated spots reporting up to 1.1 inches at the JeH Rivers farm west of Stamford. The Tuxedo area and nearby communities largely saw no rain despite scattered showers.
Funeral services for Mrs. F. W. Stegemoeller of Sagerton were held Tuesday at 4 p m at Zion Lutheran church. The 87 year old native of Germany lived in Haskell county since 1908 and died Sunday at Haskell hospital. Rev E F Shoenborn officiated burial was in Fairview cemetery of Lagerton with grandsons as pallbearers. She was survived by two daughters three sons 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren plus a half brother and half sister. Henry and Martin Stegemoeller preceded her in death.
Six Stamford vocational agriculture students will receive the Lone Star Farmer award in Dallas at the state meeting this week. They are Charles Stenholm, T. C. Rice Jr, Wilbur Cox, Jan Olson, Don Haynes and Darryl Schoonmaker. Instructors Weldon Holbrooks and Brad Rowland will accompany them.
The Stamford All Stars face the Abilene Aces Saturday at 8 p.m. at Wendeborn field in Stamford. The playoff game will decide the loop championship.
The Stamford Exchange club will host its Ladies Night banquet Friday July 27 at 8 p.m. in the First Baptist church fellowship hall with Nat's cafe serving the meal. Birthday party honors 30 years since the club's 1926 founding. charter members still active recognized. Daniel Boone of Abilene will speak. Three Blind Mice will provide instrumental music. Haley acts as MC.
Mrs. C E Grisham of Chris teen's Beauty Shop attended the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association official hair fashion school in Dallas at the Statler Hilton from Saturday through Wednesday July 14 18. As a member of state and national groups she studied classes showcasing fall and winter 1956 57 hair fashions.
Texans vote in the first Democratic primary on Saturday July 28 with polls open 8 am to 7 pm. Incumbent Dave Reyes faces O D Woody and E F M Isbell for sheriff while unopposed county officials include tax assessor-collector Ima B. Dougherty and county attorney Charles E Brownfield Jr. Governor, U S representative, and other races draw votes in Stamford and Jones county. Three ballot questions address school racial mixing, intermarriage, and federal encroachment.
William Alfred Koonce 60 died of a heart attack while carpentry work near the VFW hall. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Stamford Sanitarium at 12 05 p m. Funeral Thursday at 3 p m. Kinney Chapel with Rev H S Hinson and Rev Kenneth Evins officiating. Burial in Fairview cemetery. Survived by wife Mattie Rutherford and six sons, three daughters, three sisters, a brother, and a half brother.
Jones County residents bought 64787 in U S Savings Bonds during June. First six months 1956 sales reached 404047, 68.5 percent of the 590000 quota. Texas sales 98307958, 45.2 percent of 217 5 million quota. Humphrey urged continued bonds purchases to aid the government and economy.
Mrs John M Bennett will return to Denton to be awarded her Master of Education degree from Texas State College for Women on August 24. She and her daughter Martha Susan have attended the Demonstration School during summers, while son Bob could not attend this term. Dr Thomas F E Pierce, formerly of Stamford, heads the Demonstration School. Mrs Bennett, formerly Vera Steely, earned a Bachelor of Science in 1934 and teaches first grade at Oliver Street School.
Stamford Public schools will reopen on September 3 with registration on September 3 and 4 and the first term starting September 5. Several resignations include Betty Brogdon and Mrs Silas Triplett along with Robert L. Waller and Annie Mae Dorsey. The full faculty were re elected by the school board at term end.
Stamford Public schools are removed from warned or advised lists by the State Education Department in Austin. Supt. L. W. Johnson cites deficiencies at Washington school, chiefly teacher numbers, as the previous issue. A spring visit by three supervisors praised the program and urged full accreditation. The district could not fund an agriculture workshop and other additions. Stamford High has held full accreditation for over 40 years and welcomes the decision to restore full status.
Blackstock Studio of Stamford earned the gold star award for five photographs hung at the Texas Photographers Association convention in Houston. Of 509 submissions, 150 were selected for display. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Blackstock. works included portraits of Roulhac Bunkley and Glenda Bates in evening dress and Shirley Bounds in a casual dress.
Mrs Sam Stewart of Claude, sister of Mrs J M Bennett of Stamford, died Thursday after a brief illness. Her sister Mrs Bennett of Stamford and her son John M Bennett and his wife traveled to Claude for the funeral, held Friday.
United Church Women led by Mrs. Harry Steenson collect clothing no longer needed for those in need. Donations may be dropped at Central Presbyterian Church or arranged for pick up. Summer items encouraged now for use before school and winter needs noted. Mrs. Bob Craig to lead final summer prayer session Tuesday.
Farmers receive a one week extension to sign the soil bank agreements with July 27 as the new deadline. Final landowner signatures by August 31. Cotton from soil bank lands must be destroyed by August 3. Haskell and Jones counties expect heavy ASC activity if rain is scarce. Over 1600 contracts signed in Haskell County, with value surpassing a million dollars.

An ambulance driver was arrested Tuesday near Stamford on U S 280 after a collision with a barrow ditch and an oncoming car. The driver, who had no passengers, could not confirm whether he intended to pick up a patient. Charges were filed Wednesday by Highway Patrolman Arthur Dyson and Sheriff Dave Reyes. Damage to both vehicles was negligible.
