Willoughby Receives Air Forces Commission At Miami Beach

John A Willoughby completed the Officer Candidate School program at Miami Beach Florida and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Forces of the Army of the United States. He will direct vital administrative and supply operations in theaters worldwide. As a civilian he lived in Stamford and was a local lawyer. His wife Mrs John A Willoughby resides here.

Stamford Mourns Two War Casualties Lieut Hilscher and Pvt Trimmier Killed

Five Stamford men in varied posts were casualties of war this week. Lieut. Herman Hilscher died on D-Day in France and Pfe. Billy Joe Trimmier was killed in the Pacific possibly at Saipan. Tech. Sgt. Tommy Griges is missing. Pvt. Edwin Bruce and another wounded. Hilscher, son of Mr and Mrs J A Hilscher, was 25 and had served since 1942. He enlisted after graduating at Ft. Benning and fought with Company K, 42nd Infantry. He is survived by his parents four brothers and several sisters.

Trimmier Believed Killed in Pacific Saipan Action

Marine Billy Joe Trimmier aged 20 is reported killed in the Pacific likely Saipan. Parents Mr and Mrs John Trimmier received War Department telegram. a letter followed as Mrs Trimmier had been ill. Trimmier served in the Second Marine Division and had Tarawa invasion experience. He enlisted in 1942 at Abilene after training in San Diego. Survived by siblings and grandparents. details include birth in Desdemona and schooling in Has kell County. Captain Stanley’s status noted with recovery from June wounds.

Missing Pacific airman Tommy Griggs reported KIA over Yap Island

Tech Sgt. Tommy W. Griggs radio operator and gunner on a Liberator is missing in action over Yap Island according to a message to his wife in Turlock California. He holds the Air Medal with at least three oak leaf clusters and wrote July 4 of upcoming missions and hopes to return home to see his baby.

Capt Paul Stanley Wounded Third Time

Capt. Paul Stanley, brother of C. H. Stanley of this city and son of Mr and Mrs C H Stanley Sr of Munday, has been wounded for the third time. He served in Italy and is in the hospital at Naples where Capt. George Pryor is noted.

Pvt Edwin Bruce Wounded in France

Pvt Edwin Bruce, 20, is hospitalized in England recovering from wounds suffered in France on July 6. He arrived in England in April on his 20th birthday after serving in the invasion and later in France. His parents, Mr and Mrs Guy Bruce of Hobbs New Mexico, formerly Stamford, learn of his condition from a letter.

Negro shoots at chief of police and is shot in the leg

R L Parker a negro is in Stamford Sanitarium after being shot twice in the leg by Chief George G Flournoy as Parker fatally shot a man and threatened others near the Stamford Oil Mill. The incident delayed an ambulance taking Otto Hudson to the hospital where he died minutes later. Parker grappled for the gun as Flournoy fired, both exchanging shots.

Pupil Transfers Must be Made in July

County Superintendent B T Beaver announces July as the window for transfers for students not taught in their home school. Transfers must be filed before month end by those finishing the highest grade in their district or seeking admission to an accredited high school next September. Baby Dies After Fall From Second Floor Home

Arnold Elmore Pryor aged one year ten months died Thursday July 13 from injuries after falling from a second story apartment window on West McHurg avenue. The child, whose mother was visiting, reportedly leaned through the screen and lost balance. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Funeral services were held at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev H Hinson officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. The family had lived here about a year. father Sgt Elmore Pryor is stationed at Camp Beall, California. Democratic precinct chairs in Jones County will hold precinct conventions Saturday at 2 p.m. to elect delegates to the county convention.
