Private Hal George Mason, 18, enlisted in the infantry at Camp Blanding Florida on March 1944. He earned sharpshooter with the 30 caliber rifle and expert with the carbine. A Stamford High School graduate, he grew up with his grandparents Mr and Mrs J Duncan.
Nine Air Force announces Lt. Thomas N Beall Jr pilot of a B 26 Marauder awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement on 25 bombing missions over Europe His most memorable mission targeted an Amsterdam occupied Holland airfield with heavy flak and successful bomb runs He is from Stamford Texas and New Bern North Carolina with a daughter Mary Anne born last January now living with his wife and her parents in Newton North Carolina
David Lewis Johns of Stamford High School is in India after leaving the United States mid April. He trained at Camp Wolters Mineral Wells before joining the service in November 124 in the Signal Corps headquarters communication service. Letters from his parents Mr and Mrs L L Johns have been severed.
Lieut Charles Tavman released from Ft McClellan Alabama and assigned to Camp McCoy Wisconsin with his wife accompanying him.
Sent to California Tech Sgt Oral F Lindsay who has been here with home folks since his recent return from overseas duty has been assigned to the Air Base Unit at Santa Monica Calif Transferred to Oklahoma Owen Macon seaman second class has been transferred from San Diego Calif to Norman Okla where he will study in aviation ordnance school in preparation for being a gunner on an aircraft carrier.
Pvt Gordon Haynes has served a little over a month in the army and is stationed at Camp Roberts California. He previously worked in defense in San Diego. His wife Marke OBrien and their two sons stay in Big Spring with her parents Rev and Mrs Dick O'Brien. They came to Texas with Mrs Haynes twins Richard and Robert O'Brien who were visiting California.
Adron Johnson on 0 day leave from the navy visits his parents Mr. and Mrs. J L Johnson. A SOM 2-c aboard a destroyer escort duty has crossed the Atlantic as part of a convoy, noting actions around Bizerte during invasion day. He says most of his friends are in service and he misses peers his own age.
Lieut W A Sledge returns to Lamoor California after visiting his parents Mr and Mrs W A Sledge and his brother John W Pledge at their home.
CAMP CARSON Colonel David E. Reves son of FE. T. Reves Route 1 Leaders Texas is training at Camp Carson. He serves with HS Battery of US 613th FLA Bn (Pk) and was an athletic coach before joining the service. He has two brothers also in the service. Pack artillery units rely on tall strong men and pack mules for loading, marching, and supply work in campaigns from Tunisia to Italy.
Ensign Roscoe Gillean will work at the University of Arizona in Tucson for about a month. His wife and infant stay in Cooper, Texas. He was promoted to a higher rank about a month ago and was formerly employed by his brother at City Drug Store.
John A Willoughby completed the Officer Candidate School program at Miami Beach Florida and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Forces of the Army of the United States. He will direct vital administrative and supply operations in theaters worldwide. As a civilian he lived in Stamford and was a local lawyer. His wife Mrs John A Willoughby resides here.
Five Stamford men in varied posts were casualties of war this week. Lieut. Herman Hilscher died on D-Day in France and Pfe. Billy Joe Trimmier was killed in the Pacific possibly at Saipan. Tech. Sgt. Tommy Griges is missing. Pvt. Edwin Bruce and another wounded. Hilscher, son of Mr and Mrs J A Hilscher, was 25 and had served since 1942. He enlisted after graduating at Ft. Benning and fought with Company K, 42nd Infantry. He is survived by his parents four brothers and several sisters.
Marine Billy Joe Trimmier aged 20 is reported killed in the Pacific likely Saipan. Parents Mr and Mrs John Trimmier received War Department telegram. a letter followed as Mrs Trimmier had been ill. Trimmier served in the Second Marine Division and had Tarawa invasion experience. He enlisted in 1942 at Abilene after training in San Diego. Survived by siblings and grandparents. details include birth in Desdemona and schooling in Has kell County. Captain Stanley’s status noted with recovery from June wounds.
Tech Sgt. Tommy W. Griggs radio operator and gunner on a Liberator is missing in action over Yap Island according to a message to his wife in Turlock California. He holds the Air Medal with at least three oak leaf clusters and wrote July 4 of upcoming missions and hopes to return home to see his baby.
Capt. Paul Stanley, brother of C. H. Stanley of this city and son of Mr and Mrs C H Stanley Sr of Munday, has been wounded for the third time. He served in Italy and is in the hospital at Naples where Capt. George Pryor is noted.
Pvt Edwin Bruce, 20, is hospitalized in England recovering from wounds suffered in France on July 6. He arrived in England in April on his 20th birthday after serving in the invasion and later in France. His parents, Mr and Mrs Guy Bruce of Hobbs New Mexico, formerly Stamford, learn of his condition from a letter.
R L Parker a negro is in Stamford Sanitarium after being shot twice in the leg by Chief George G Flournoy as Parker fatally shot a man and threatened others near the Stamford Oil Mill. The incident delayed an ambulance taking Otto Hudson to the hospital where he died minutes later. Parker grappled for the gun as Flournoy fired, both exchanging shots.
County Superintendent B T Beaver announces July as the window for transfers for students not taught in their home school. Transfers must be filed before month end by those finishing the highest grade in their district or seeking admission to an accredited high school next September. Home districts cover transport and tuition when the pupil’s grade is not offered locally, otherwise parents pay transport and tuition for out of district attendance.

Fort Worth Sub Regional Abilene figures show Stamford's Series E quota at 252 200 dollars, 52 percent of Jones county total, with 166 821 sold by July 15. Anson and Hamlin also miss targets while countywide quota of 485 000 is nearly met at 417 575.50 sold. overall county quota exceeded with 1 081 349.50 in bonds sold.

A Rotary Club luncheon featured Lt. Bert A. Kirk Jr describing how the Prussian military clique and Hitler's regime shaped the current war. He traced German actions from 192% to evade Versailles to the Nazi conquest. New officers and committee heads were announced for the coming year.
Arnold Elmore Pryor aged one year ten months died Thursday July 13 from injuries after falling from a second story apartment window on West McHurg avenue. The child, whose mother was visiting, reportedly leaned through the screen and lost balance. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Funeral services were held at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev H Hinson officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. The family had lived here about a year. father Sgt Elmore Pryor is stationed at Camp Beall, California. Survivors include the parents a brother Donald Eddie and grandparents Mr and Mrs A H Clem of Post and Mr and Mrs T Pryor of Quinlan.

Pvt Aubrey Adams on a two week furlough went from Michigan to Lincoln Nebraska after a visit with Mrs Adams parents in San Angelo with his wife.
Democratic precinct chairs in Jones County will hold precinct conventions Saturday at 2 p.m. to elect delegates to the county convention. The county gathering is scheduled for Anson on Saturday July 29 at 2 p.m. Clarence Johnson announced the plan while Stamford convention was called for 2 p.m. by the local chair.
Thirty nine county men were sent to the union station at Lubbock Monday from the Jones county local board for induction. A prior group of twenty seven went on July 12 for pre induction physical examinations. Names listed include Everett Garvin James Griffin High Oliver Sanders Marvin Monroe Hull Adolph Williams Jansen Deras Milam Long James Paschal Millorn and others ready for reporting for induction.
In the Stamitonm trading room under Mrs George Pryor supervision 182 women worked 30 days totaling 1278 hours this quarter. The facility will remain closed until September 1 unless emergency orders arrive, when a new quota will be set.
