Stamford votes to spend 40000 to overhaul the 1907 Carnegie Library Youth center use shifts to upper floors basement becomes library space with improved access. Plans include new footings waterproofing windows doors tile floors air conditioning and updated lighting throughout.
Heavy rains and cooler days cut water pumping in Stamford. From March 20 to June 20, 14.844 million gallons less were pumped than the prior year, with July readings pending. The April-May period showed a small rise, while March-April fell about three million and May-June dropped fourteen million gallons. City officials cite weather and consumption patterns as factors.

Three Stamford High School FFA members Carl Marugg Zonnie Stephens and Freddie Ekenstam will receive Lone Star Farmer Degrees at the state convention in Dallas The ceremony at the Statler Hilton Hotel includes an awards banquet on Thursday night Their instructor Weldon Holbrooks notes the degree honors only about two percent of FFA members and is surpassed only by the American Farmer Degree The trio will also serve as voting delegates from Stamford Local Chapter and John Oman Area 2 vice president spoke at vesper services.
Lonnie Allen Hokanson 17 of Avoca was critically injured about 11:55 p m Saturday when struck by a 1960 Chevrolet pickup driven by Robert Lee Reyes Jr 35 of Lueders while walking along FM 142 nine miles east of Stamford. He suffered a concussion fractures and internal injuries and was taken to Stamford Sanitarium. He remained in serious but improving condition days later as surgery and recovery continued.
City of Stamford workers installed only two water meters this week, far below the average. The meters were placed for Ode Justis at 717 FE Reynolds and B PF Splawn at Avoca.
Seven Jones County residents are invited to a first ever reunion of former patients of the Texas Rehabilitation Center at Gonzales near Gonzales on Sunday August 13. About 350 former TRC patients are expected to attend sharing experiences in wheelchairs or on crutches. Vitor Canavespi of Bryan, president of the association, emphasized public education on rehabilitation needs and funding shortfalls.
Funeral services for George Edgar Fisher 57 were Monday at 2 p.m. in the Jayton Baptist Church. He died Saturday at 4 p.m. in the VA Hospital in Big Spring after a week’s illness. Rev. Jack Southerland officiated burial followed at Jayton. Survivors include his wife two sons George and Chissom and one sister. He moved to Stamford in 1945 and worked at Stamford Cotton Oil Mill since then. Pallbearers were Charley Taylor Melvin Lee Grady Taylor Ed Springer Leslie Lowe and Howard Weems.
W. W. Putman received a building permit for a carport and storage room at 1211. The total cost for the two projects is set at 400 dollars.
Hart Master Post of the American Legion elected officers for the new year at its July 10 meeting. Jess Berry was reelected commander, Raymond Astin became vice commander, and Harry Yates was named second vice commander. Other officers include Lee Williams as finance officer Stanley Hall as adjutant reelected, with George Kinney Roy Duke and Roscoe Hood as trustees and Dr Tony Selmon as post physician.
Two Jones County Farm Bureau members M. E. Carothers and Kenneth Martin will attend the 13th annual Texas Farm Bureau Leadership Training Institute July 25 to 28 in Mineral Wells. The program offers leadership classes and workshops on Farm Bureau responsibilities, organization history and procedures, with sessions on agricultural issues led by notable figures including Dr. George S. Benson of Searcy Arkansas.
Lake Stamford level began receding after the spillway carried floodwaters for the first time since 1953. On Wednesday the elevation was about 1415 feet with the spillway at 1414 feet. water is expected to fall slowly toward 1414.2 feet where it can bypass, causing evaporation to influence stabilization. Few property damages were noted as some fields still hold water and Fish Haven at Lake Stamford State Park ferries customers by boat to the barge.
Progress in developing new cotton breeds for this area will be reviewed at a meeting Monday night sponsored by the Jones County Young Farmers. L. F E. Ellwood of the Texas Planting Seed Association will discuss varieties tested this year, with Glynn Shaw assisting. All area farmers invited, and a potential August Spur Experiment Station field day noted.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 5 30 p m for Stephen Ross Elliott the still born infant son of Mr and Mrs C O Buck Elliott of Stamford in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery Rev H B Haterius pastor officiated. The baby was born Monday at 1 p m in Stamford Sanitorium Grandparents were Mr and Mrs Henry Petterson of Avoca and Mrs Ceta Elliott of Stamford.
Mrs Gene Shackelford returns home after a two week stay at St. Ann's Hospital in Abilene. She plans to travel to Galveston for surgery at a later date.
Glen Dale Baumback 14 son of Otto and Mrs Baumback of Stamford was bitten on the instep by a rattlesnake while leaving a stock pond near his home. He was taken to Stamford Sanitarium and was reported doing fine on Wednesday morning.
