Lubbock Company Wins Stamford Water Line Contract

R. B. Hodgson and Co. awarded the contract to build a new water line for Stamford City Council. The Lubbock firm was the lowest of six bids with an original total of 60 422.85 dollars, a figure that may be reduced by elms- and related adjustments.

Charter Night set for Stamford Lions Club

Dr E G Moody president announces Ladies night and charter presentation on February 3 at Stamford high school auditorium and cafeteria. Club started in November with 38 men and meets Tuesdays at Nat's Cafe. Local clubs from Ruby Sweetwater Anson Abilene Aspermont Jamlin attend. A Salt Lake City speaker will come.

School Census For 1956 57 Underway In City

The 1956 57 school census is being taken as school supervisor T R Trosley says. Forms sent home have enrolled children not a house canvass. Parents with a child starting school next year should call at the high school and supply information at 1100.

Stamford FFA Boys Enter Animals At Ft Worth Show

Stamford FFA members plan to showcase multiple animals at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth. Darryl Schoonmaker will show a Shorthorn steer, Wilbur Cox a Jersey heifer, Charles Stenholm three registered Duroc gilts, Cox as herdsman for Virgil Rowland, Rowland with three registered Jersey heifers, Moritz with one heifer, and Judy Moritz will show her father’s heifer. A community screening of the film Martin Luther will be held at Sagerton school on Sunday January 29 at 8 p.m. Admission is free, with a free will offering to cover expenses.

Stam ford City Council Members Seek Re-Election

Three Stam ford City Council members whose terms expire this year announce re election bids for a new term. W G Harrison seeks Place 1 Dr George Pryor Place 3 and Steve Bennett Place 2 all aim for a second term. Pryor filled Lindsey’s unexpired term while others include Mayor Carothers and Councilmen Reece and Gleaton with terms expiring next year.

Rule FFA Boy Takes First At Haskell Show

Jerry Don Threet, a Rule FFA boy in his third year of vocation agriculture, won first in the light weight dirty-lot steer division at the Haskell County FFA and 4-H Fat Livestock Show in Haskell. Other Rule FFA members finished among the top standings in steers, sheep, and hogs, including grand champion dry-lot steer John Stone of Haskell and several placing Rule boys.

Moffetts Visit Old Friends Here

Stamford residents welcomed Rev. and Mrs. W. C. Moffett visiting from Sunday afternoon to Monday. The couple, former First Baptist Church pastors 1925 to 1930, spoke at the church and represented Mary Hardin Baylor College Belton. Mrs. Moffett addressed training union youth.

Stamford FFA Show Highlights Livestock Contests In Damp Morning

Stamford FFA staged a sheep dairy and beef cattle show in downtown Stamford despite damp weather. Judges listed include Clemon Montgomery with awards to Edd Shuquist Richard Carson Bobby Rogers Jan Olson and Don Campbell among others with ribbons awarded in fat steers breeding beef cows sheep and lamb classes. No cash prizes were given and future ribbon events set for February 10 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds.

Wheelbarrow Derby And Porchlight Drive For Polio Funds

The Wheelbarrow Derby in Stamford starts Saturday at 2 p.m. with two starting points toward the Square. The Porchlight Mothers March aims to double Stamford’s polio donations, led by Garfield Zimmerman and Jaycees volunteers. Separate events include Sagerton basketball and boxing matches to boost the polio drive.

City groups urge poll tax payments before deadline

Several Stamford organizations including the Pverian Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club are pushing members and others to pay poll taxes at the Chamber of Commerce. The office will accept payments through January 31, with incentives to remind at least five others.

Cooperation urged on itinerant salesmen by Stamford chamber

The Goodwill Committee of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce calls for citizen cooperation in monitoring itinerant salesmen. City ordinance licenses and bonds operators, bans door to door selling, and permits calls only by invitation. The committee warns many out of town sellers are untrustworthy and may take money without delivering goods or offer poor service.

Haskell Woman To Be Speaker For Founders Day Tea

The St. AA Champion Stamford Bulldogs were honored at the annual football banquet January 20 in the high school cafeteria. Pep Squad president Noretta Louvorn led decorations in blue and white and guests heard from L. W. Johnson and Texas A&M assistant coach Jim Owens. Donald Wills was named Football King and Sonja Chandler Football Queen, with gifts given to coaches and staff.

Psychologist Cleo Dawson to Speak at Stamford Ladies Night

Dr. Cleo Dawson, noted psychologist and lecturer, will address the Stamford Rotary Club's Ladies Night Banquet on Monday February 13 at the high school cafeteria. Tickets go on sale this weekend. Dawson was born on a Texas cattle ranch near the Rio Grande and grew up bilingual, focusing on psychology languages and human relations.

Chili and Bean Supper Planned at Stamford VFW Hall

The Stamford VFW Auxiliary plans a chili and bean supper at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the VFW hall. Attendees should bring their tax receipts. The group also voted to send checks to the local March of Dimes drive and to the Pompeii Polio Foundation.

Ground Observers Unit May Be Formed in County

Stamford Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee met with officials from Jones County towns on January 10 in Anson to organize a Ground Observers Corps unit for Jones County. Weather totals reach half inch precipitation this year

Drizzle over Saturday and Sunday added .26 inch of moisture with .08 inch by 5 o'clock Saturday and an additional .18 inch by 5 o'clock Sunday. The prior snow in Stamford pushed monthly moisture totals to .25 inch, equaling just over a half-inch of precipitation since January.
