The coldest weather in ten years hit Stamford with an unofficial 6 am reading of 2 degrees above zero at Swencon Land and Cattle. The episode followed days of mild warmth and included light grain damage and no livestock losses amid a brief snow flurry.
County Judge Albert Smith designated January 22 to 29 as Salvage Week to support nationwide scrap drives. The committee led by Henry Fry Jr and M. Binion asks families to collect scrap rubber metal and waste fats for later pickup, with specifics on saving fats and turning in silk nylon hose and green tin cans.
The class of 43 E completes training at Stamford Flying School and moves to basic training. The group did well and should yield skilled pilots. Cadets split to several Basic Schools rather than one unit. A new class arrives to begin training.
Dr Ike Hudson head of the 39th station hospital unit at Camp Barkeley Abilene was promoted from major to lieutenant colonel Wednesday. He wore the new silver leaves during a visit with his wife two daughters and his parents Dr and Mrs F E Hudson Wednesday night.
General J Watt page state selective service director urged Texas local boards to cooperate with the nationwide plan to locate delinquents under the Selective Service Act. He described publicity as a key weapon and noted January 1943 deadlines for voluntary compliance.
Stamford friends have learned that Cc F Heinz, previously adjutant at Stamford Flying school for several months, has been promoted to major. He is now stationed at the Navigation school at San Marcos. Texans W J McDonald Observatory houses a 52 inch reflection, among the largest in the United States.
Purchase by Cpl. and Mrs. George Rollins of the Crosby residence was completed December 14. After buying, the Rollins had improvements done prior to moving in, as the Crosbys relocated to San Angelo.
The Anson Jones County Red Cross report highlights a $7,950 quota for 1943 with $4,700 for home and abroad programs and $3,250 for local services. Jobs include planning the 1943 War Fund, sewing and knitting efforts, 41,400 surgical dressings, 257 home nursing certificates, and nine member volunteer corps with 17 aides in training.
The Lueders Methodist Church was dedicated Sunday morning January 17 led by Bishop Ivan Lee Holt who preached the sermon. Rev Vernon Henderson assisted, with district superintendent Rev Ss H Young opening prayer as church officers and women society leaders joined for the dedication ceremony. A reception followed with a chicken dinner and festive decorations.
Bob Wright son of Rev and Mrs Cal C Wright will receive his BBA in Business Administration from Southwestern University Georgetown at special mid term graduation exercises. Commencement is at 10 30 a m Friday January 29 in University Auditorium. Wright is a Kappa Sigma member four year letterman on the Pirate football team and a member of the S Association. After Southwestern he will enter a Naval training base.
Henry G. Andrews Jr known locally as Pete will receive his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Texas Austin in the first midterm graduation the university has held. No formal commencement ceremonies will be held and graduates receive degrees this semester. He was valedictorian of his Stamford high school class of 1939 and is the son of Mr and Mrs H G Andrews of this city.
The American lists local area servicemen with short notices. Arthur C. Moore, 1k years old in November, serves in a Marine Raider Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California, after enlisting in August 1942. Milton Olson, son of S. A. Olson, joined the Army Air Forces on October 19, 1942 and trains at Lubbock Army Flying School. he is a Avoca High School graduate. L. H. Rhea, son of C. B. Shea, is in the U S Marines, stationed in San Diego, California, age 22, having entered service about six months ago.
Four sons of the Polacek family are in military service as shown in a photo beside the service flag bearing four stars. The image captures the F P Polacek household with all four brothers serving in the U S armed forces.
Mrs Michael presented a review of They Were Expendable by W L White at a book review tea hosted by the Central Christian church women on Monday afternoon. The event featured introductions by Mrs O A Kinney with attendees from city churches and tea served by church members.
Tom Porter, work unit leader of the Soil Conservation office, reported for army service at Camp Wolters on Monday. He arrived in February 1939. Morris W. Liston, agricultural engineer, will take Porter's place as work unit leader.
Stamford men assigned to the 496th Twin Engine Flying Training Squadron at Lubbock Army Flying School include Richard F. Matthew Doyle L Fastland J B Prewitt and John M Swenson with Morris Bean of route 3 also listed. The group joins others from Jones county in training duties at the dual engine school.
Stamford Production Credit Association stockholders plan their annual meeting Friday January 20 at 10 30 in the Bunkhouse at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds Stamford. Officers will present annual reports and two directors will be elected lunch will be served. Share the ride committees will be formed across several counties to save mileage.
Mrs E L Martin elected to lead the Pierian Club for 1943 44 at the January 14 business meeting with installation planned for May She succeeds Mrs George Kinney as president Other officers include Mrs J F McCulloch first vice president Mrs D Hassen second vice president Mrs R C Giles recording secretary Mrs Marvin Hinds corresponding secretary Mrs E R Pace treasurer and Mrs H C Michael critic and parliamentarian The club will elect the membership committee by ballot and name standing committees January 21 The club voted to donate to the Pennybacker cancer research memorial fund The weekly program focused on Safety and Health with talks by members on first aid rules keeping up with medicine nutrition blitz plagues fevers and more
Jones county draft board members from Anson and guests from Stamford and Anson attended a Legion post feed at Vernon D Hart Post of The American Legion hall Monday night. Dr C H Morris gave a patriotic address and Rev Miles B Hayes delivered the invocation and benediction. J D Pickens spoke on board operations, while Mayor C M Francis shared remarks and Dean Culp presided and introduced speakers.
A ground instructor formerly from Stamford High School has joined Vernon Flying School in Dexter New Mexico. The educator previously served as ground instructor at Vernon George Corse and is now teaching at the Vernon Flying School.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce schedules its annual banquet for February 5. RC Giles cites possible date changes for speaker availability. Committee members include J L Hill Jr and C E Coombes with Roy Duke L W Johnson.
Stamford football team honored by the pep squad at a Friday night banquet in blue and white decorations. Kenneth Williams spoke for the team as Boots Rogers was ill, with gifts exchanged and a new school song finale. About 35 attendees joined a post banquet dance at the Texas Cowboy Reunion pavilion.
The Bunker Hill Demonstration club hosted Miss Cathryn Sands home demonstration agent who spoke on nutrition and egg production. Mrs R V Hagle and Mrs W A Roberts were elected poultry demonstrators. two new members joined as cookies and hot chocolate were served. The group met at Mrs R V Hagle’s home with a future gathering planned for February 11 at Mrs Earl Rody.
