Local exhibitors win in rabbits and poultry show

Stamford junior exhibitors excelled at the Jones County Livestock Show on Saturday winning in the rabbit and poultry divisions while conceding the swine and cattle categories.

Stenholm wins across sheep and goat divisions with exhibitors from Hamlin Hawley Anson. Cary Stenholm and Tracy Wilson of Stamford take grand and reserve broiler titles. Wayne and Lisa Medford of Stamford win grand and reserve capon honors. Anson’s Greg Goza wins grand rabbit. Jim Muehlstein of Stamford 4-H reserve rabbit. Hamlin tops gilt. Hawley leads barrow. Anson and Hawley claim sheep and milk goat awards. breeding beef and steer honors go to southern county youths.

FHA drives $615 for Abilene Rehab Center

Stamford Future Homemakers of America collected $615 for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene on January 12. Members went door to door for $15 and attended the Rehab Telethon January 14 with Sonda Rhodes and Susan Guzman presenting the funds.

Area farmers head to Washington to lobby for farm relief

Stamford area farmers Joe Osment Jim Astin Bill Pritchard and H M Phillips flew to Washington this week with Haskell area colleagues to lobby legislators on high costs and low prices. Others planned to depart weekend weather permitting led by Guy Randy Ronnie Denson and Don Starr. An estimated 2000 Texas farmers may converge on the capital, while the local American Agriculture office said leftover funds would go to charity if the office closes.

Bye Bye Birdie performances set next week

Stamford High School presents the zany musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie on January 26 and 28. Senior Class sponsor Mrs. Mary Gannaway says ticket sales are brisk and a sellout is expected. Ricky Haterius, Senior Class President, notes the show delights teens and remains a popular favorite.

With the February filing deadline near, many county offices face contested races. New entrants include County Judge Leon Thurman for district judge, Carl Bearden for Precinct 2, and attorney Raymond Hollabaugh for district attorney. Jazz band added at Stamford High School

Stamford High School adds a jazz band alongside a new director and remodeled band hall. The group rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays and has performed at a student assembly and a Christmas program, plans a spring jazz festival, and will play at home varsity basketball games.

U S Senator hopeful Krueger visits West Texas stock shows

U S Senate candidate Congressman Bob Krueger spoke briefly at the Jones County Livestock Show in Stamford amid a multi county swing through West Texas. He promoted beef trade expansion, discussed a bill on stricter import rules, and urged tighter standards to level foreign and domestic markets. He criticized Senator Tower's outreach and planned further stops in Seymour Breckenridge and Brady.

Spring Rain Follows Cold Spells Across Stam Ford

A spring like shower fell between cold snaps with subfreezing nights in Stam ford over the weekend. A mid week sleet and snow storm added 0.2 inches of precipitation and Sunday rain pushed the year total to 19 inches.
