Hospital wing opens at Stamford Memorial with 16 new rooms

Stamford Memorial Hospital hosts an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. to view its $600000 new wing on the southeast corner. The project funded by revenue bonds adds 16 new rooms including five family suites, two isolation rooms, and a new waiting room.

Tax deadline nears plates to go on sale

Roy L. Lane Jones County Tax Collector warns 31 January 1974 is last day to pay county and state property taxes without penalty. He says 1975 motor vehicle license plates go on sale February 1 at the main tax office courthouse and at Hamlin Stamford and Lueders sub stations. Owners should bring all three parts of the Austin form.

CofC drive yields strong Stamford participation

Citizens of Stamford respond well to the Stamford Chamber of Commerce membership drive chaired by Charles Hafer. By Wednesday morning, 49 individuals or firms had paid dues totaling $1890 for the new year, with letters sent to former and prospective members and board members prepared to call nonrespondents.

Paint Creek Water Pipeline Construction Starts

Digging and installation for the Paint Creek Water Supply System began at the Stamford city limit and will move northward. The project targets completion by November 28, 1975 with meters flagged or inspected, and all grants and loans approved by FmHA.

Training session outlines steps to attract industry to Stamford

A three hour seminar in Stamford featured Texas Industrial Commission official Homer Tucker and West Texas Utilities’ Richard Petre. Nine Stamford men and area coordinator Ron Bingham attended. Speakers emphasized trained industrial teams, local labor data, utilities costs, financing options, and site information. Present also were Jim Hokanson Charles Hafer Albert David Bill Glenn Roy Craig Bill Preston Bill Longley Bill Koon and Jake Westfall.

Jones County approves 10 percent pay rise for staff

Jones County commissioners vote to raise salaries by ten percent for county employees including County Judge Leon Thurman and Sheriff Woodrow Simmons. The increases move Thurman from 802 to 882.20 dollars per month and raise other officials from 735 to 808.50 dollars, with all four commissioners and numerous staff also benefiting.

Preacher to join India crusade from Dallas church

The Rev. Gary Worden of Temple Baptist Church will join a 20 person American clergy team on a 20 day crusade in India starting February 10. Led by Indian evangelist Bhasme Sumanth the group will preach and lay groundwork for Baptist churches and a Bible college linked to North Texas Baptist College in Fort Worth. Worden previously preached crusades in Mexico but this will be his first in India.

County attorney resignation announced for Jones County

Jones County announces the resignation of County Attorney A J Smith Jr effective February 1 1975 after a grand jury criticized his handling of misdemeanor cases. The county will seek a successor. Judge Leon Thurman says the new attorney must clear the case backlog and applicants are to present plans and qualifications. Smith will remain in private practice.

Longtime educator Irene Stewart honored at Texas conference

Irene Stewart, director of curriculum for Haskell County Schools, received honorary life membership in the Texas Association of School Administrators at the Texas Education Advisory Conference in Austin. The award honored 64 retired Texas educators with 30 years of service. Stewart has 43 years in education across Sagerton and Haskell County. Don Howard and Clyde Hall of Stamford attended.

Cast Named for Senior Class Play Annie Get Your Gun

The 1975 Senior Class Play Annie Get Your Gun will be staged at 7 30 p m on Friday January 3 and Saturday February 1 with Kyle Childress as class president announcing ticket sales at 1 50 for students 2 25 for adults at the door 1 75. Tryouts were held Wednesday January 8.
