Presbyterians Approve Plans for New Church Edifice

Central Presbyterian Church members approved tentative plans for a southeast town church. The building committee works with Abilene architects Tittle and Luther to finalize details and seek bids in spring or early summer. Estimated cost is 82600. The T shaped structure will be on Rowland Drive between Bartley and Landon, with offices, kitchen, recreation area and classrooms along the top of the T.

Animals to be sold after January 18 show in local events

Calves shown by Stamford FFA at local livestock show and Jones County event on January 18 will be sold afterward. Beef offered butchered or on the hoof as whole or half carcass at about two cents above market price to ensure small profit for FFA project. calves have been fed 120 days and are described as good beef by the agriculture instructor Weldon Holbrooks.

Farm Labor Days Planned in Jones County

Three farm labor days will be held in Jones County in January, led by Kenneth Carman of the Texas Employment Commission Anson office. Events include Stamford City Auditorium on Jan 14, Anson County Court House on Jan 21, and Hamlin Fire Hall on Jan 27, offering job seekers and farmers a central meeting space with no hiring obligation or fees.

Peak Production Reached Last Week at Plant

Peak production reached at the Carhartt of Texas clothing plant with 100 dozen blouses completed on Thursday and Friday by 30 workers. The new shorts assembly line averaged 92 dozen garments per day. fourteen operators were added and total staff reaches about 50. Lucille Mueller and Bill Hurtel are local supervisors with prior garment factory experience.

Year End Bank Reports Show Growing Deposits 1964

Farmers State Bank of Lueders and Stamford Federal Savings and Loan report strong growth in assets and deposits for 1963 and early 1964. Farmers State Bank assets reach 5.555 million while deposits double since ownership change in 1959. Stamford Federal shows rising savings and mortgage lending with higher deposits and new accounts. Curtis Johnson notes 60 new savings accounts in 1963 and area building activity supports the gains.

Stonewall County Livestock Show Set for Feb 1

Life insurance is projected to hit the trillion dollar mark by 1970 due to population growth and more people entering business. In sports, Aspermont’s James Ray led all tournament scorers with 34 points as Avoca edged Stamford B 75-64 and Hamlin beat Clyde 70-42 in the three day event.

Routine Radiation Monitoring by Soil Conservation Service

Local Stock Show Seeks About 75 Entries in Midland County

About 75 students from Avoca and Stamford schools are expected to compete in the Stamford area FFA Livestock Show at the new Feeding Center near the Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds. Judging starts at 9 40 a m with J F Dozier as judge.

Murder Trial Set At Arson-Fed, 24

Four Stamford based Latin-Americans face murder charges for the death of migrant cotton picker Antonio Meza after a beating in Stamford Coop Gia on Nov 9. Seledono Delgado Jessie Cedille Raymond Cedillo and Ian Loner are named defendants with two juveniles among the indicted. Trial date set for Feb 24.

James F. Pippin of Anson declares his intention to seek the Jones County sheriff’s office. At 40, he has lived in the county for years and served as Leeders city marshal and Anson city patrolman for three years. He and his wife Marie Schooler of Lueders are high school graduates and members of First Baptist Church.

Few Poll Tax Receipts Issued as 1964 Deadline Trails

Only 57 poll tax receipts issued by noon Wednesday far below expectations for January 1964. Receipts are handled at Stamford Chamber of Commerce and may be bought at the Anson County tax assessor’s office. The slow start follows the unsettled status of the poll tax after the November 9 special election.

Harvey Tops Odessa Show With 840 Pound Hereford Steer

Stanley Harvey of the Jones County 4 H Club won Reserve Champion with his 840 lb Hereford steer Liano at the Send Pulls Hereford Show in Odessa on Thursday Jan 2. The prize animal was bred by Granite Hills Hereford Ranch and later sold for 1500 at Odessa sale. Harvey and family are active in 4 H, with two younger sons in feeders, and Stanley plans further appearances in Abilene Fat Stock Show and Southwestern Exposition in Fort Worth.
