Stamford Banks Report Deposits Near 3.3 Million

The two Stamford banks combined deposits reach 8 322 429 74 at December 31 1942 with First National Bank at 2 029 682 01 and Stamford State Bank at 1 292 747 73 compared with 2 335 296 41 last year. First National assets total 2 145 191 78 and loans 148 667 65. Stamford State assets total 178 052 52 with loans 560 119 40.

Subsidy Offered for Planting Seed Cotton in Jones County

Jones County farmers can receive a subsidy of 1.10 to 2.25 dollars per hundred pounds on planting seed cotton. Eligibility includes forming cooperative groups, using approved varieties such as Acala and Deltapine, sourcing seed from approved sources, and applying at seed purchase. County agent James M. Binion urges early contact to form groups and order seed.

Red Cross to Hold Annual Meeting in Jones County

The Jones County Red Cross chapter will hold its annual meeting January 18 at the county production room on Oliver Street School. All paid 1942 dues members and lifers or patrons may attend and vote. A nominating committee led by W A Haynes will report, with officers and chairmen slated to present written year end activity reports.

Ricks Reviews Six Months of Rotary Year at Stamford Club

R. C. Ricks, president, addressed the Stamford Rotary Club at Cog Church luncheon, recounting six months of club accomplishments. He highlighted programs including a farmers barbecue and urged Rotarians to write letters to service members from the area and to buy Red Cross kits for service men.

Steps Taken in Organization of Red Cross Units

The Red Cross Motor Corps and Staff Assistance Corps are forming after meetings on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Both men and women can join Motor Corps and volunteer 18 hours annually in uniform. An eligibility meeting is set for Friday at 7 30 p.m. at Mrs. Sanford Hodge’s home. Staff assistants must be women with relevant education and will take a seven two hour lesson course led by Mrs. L M York. Clerical volunteers will also contribute 18 hours yearly. After noon classes may be offered at the production room if needed.

Same Officials Re-Elected by Stamford Federal Savings

Three directors whose terms expired were re-elected at the Stamford Federal Savings and Loan Association annual shareholders meeting in the city council room. Holdover directors include W C Leavitt H G Andrews R R Baird and L W Johnson. Officers Cleburne Huston president W G Swenson vice president and C F Upshaw secretary treasurer were re-elected. The association paid 4 percent dividends for the year and reports December 31 assets of 54 200 08 loans at 46 880 382.

John B. Markham Dies in Dallas

John B. Markham died in Dallas Monday. He was father to Charles Markham of First National Bank and Clay Markham of Stamford State Bank. Funeral held in Dallas, body moved to Holland for burial beside his wife. Survived by six daughters and two sons. family moved from Stamford to Snyder, Truscott, and Dallas over the years.

Jarvis Howori Campbell daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard C Campbell of Avoca Rt 1 holds a civil service position in Washington in the Central Records section of the Coast Guard She began work on September 1 and lives at 1723 Hobart Street Northwest She attended Draughon’s Business College in Abilene before entering government service She would have become a costume designer if not for joining the government service

Funeral for Infant Jerry Don Baugh in Stamford

Infant Jerry Don Baugh son of Mr and Mrs Albert Baugh died at Stamford Sanitarium shortly after birth. Simple funeral services were held Thursday at Kinney Funeral chapel with Rev Cal Wright officiating. Burial followed at Highland cemetery. Grandparents Albert Baugh Sr of Asrmont and G A Bridges of Stanton accompanied the family.

R E Johnson was elected president of the Stamford Exchange Club at a Stamford Inn meeting last Friday. He will assume office Friday, succeeding Travis Boucheit. Holdovers include Ben Bungwell Dr L F Metz and Travis Bouchett. The club ordered gold footballs for members of the football run and awarded Coach Lee Walker a $25 war bond before he left for army service.

James H. Scott Dies in Dallas Burial Thursday

James H. Scott a former Stamford mill owner and banker died in Dallas Wednesday morning. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday in Dallas with 4 p.m. Breckenridge burial. Survived by a brother, two sisters, and his wife Virginia McKinney. he was a Rotary Club charter member and Presbyterian elder.

Former Sweetwater Man Joins Stamford Police Force

J. B. Frazier of Sweetwater becomes Stamford police fingerprint man starting January 1. He takes over from J. L. Johnson, who resigned due to ill health. no replacement for assistant chief has been named. Frazier and his wife, a teacher at Avoca, reside on Moran Street in Stamford.
