Stamford street paving for about two dozen blocks may begin within weeks. Engineer Jimmy Nichols told the contractor work can start anytime between March 15 and April 1 after the program was postponed.
State Jaycee President Bob Sheehy of Waco will deliver the principal address at the Jaycee Banquet at Stamford Country Club at 7:30 p m Monday. He was elected at the Galveston convention and has served as a local and state leader in Jaycee projects.
Mrs W C Cannon turned 93 on Monday at her home 208 East Oliver Street with her children and friends visiting from Waco Lubbock Stamford and local areas. Born February 25 1870 in Spearsville Louisiana she moved to Coryell County in 1890 after marriage. Her husband Mr Cannon died in 1918.
Trail Chevrolet Co owner Wade Watts announces a two day Spring Sports Spree Friday and Saturday March 1 and 2 featuring new Chevrolet sport models the Impala Supersport Nova Supersport and Corvair Monza Spyder. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served.
JF West was elected president at the Stamford Country Club annual meeting on Monday night, succeeding Roy Moritz. Charley Brownfield became the new vice president, and Richard Lane was re elected secretary treasurer.
Funeral services for Mrs S L Bryan 87 were held Tuesday at St John’s Methodist Church with Rev Burgin Atkins officiating. She died Monday at Stanford Memorial Hospital after a fall and hip fracture. Born Rosa Derheyden in 1876 in Waxahachie she married S L Bryan in 1892. They lived in Jones County since 1901 and moved to Stamford in 1944. She leaves three daughters two sons a large family and is buried at Highland Cemetery.
Bruno Meil 76 Avoca farmer died Monday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a stroke. Born December 4 1886 near Austin he moved to Jones County as a child. Survived by wife Vera son DeWitt daughters Christine Jack son of Odessa Morrow McBay Britehitt two stepdaughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral held at Christ Lutheran Church with Kinney Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Charles Coggin along with Carol Lee and Carl spent a week in Stamford visiting Mrs. Coggin's parents Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Sitton and her brother Phil.
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. W. H. Green 79 a long time Jones County resident who died Sunday in Stamford Memorial Hospital at Avoca. Rev Billy Wilkerson and Rev Howard Quiett officiated with burial at Mount Oak Cemetery. Surviving are her husband two sons Clifton Stamford and Robert Anson three daughters Earl Smith Lubbock Doc White Avoca and J O Fox Abilene 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Paint Creek School announces Open House during Public School Week with visits available all week and special emphasis on Wednesday. Supt. H P Morrison says all visitors on Wednesday will be served lunch in the school cafeteria.
Paint Creek High School champions of District 14B face Rochester High School, district 133% champions, in a bi district playoff at Haskell Gym. The game starts 7:30 pm. Paint Creek coaches H. P. Morrison and the team hold a 4 record, advancing for the fourth straight year.
Stamford holds an annual sports banquet at the National Guard Armory to recognize 1962 Bulldog football players. Dick Todd will cap the event as principal speaker. three players receive top honors while all 61 squad members are thanked. Tickets at the door.
The Stamford American marks its 35th year of publication with volume 35 number 1. Founded April 25 1924 by RC Thomas, the paper notes occasional 53-week years and past errors but celebrates the milestone as it nears the first issue of a new year. The 1924 debut issue featured eight pages, a front page item on a new iceless refrigerator at Bunklery Drug Store, and an editorial asserting Stamford's growth needs.
This week water meters were installed for Doyle Lee at 83 East Davenport and Carl Manske at 1320 Landon Street.
March 8 is deadline to sign for water service in Sagerton with $50 meter deposit refundable if project fails. Engineers report Stamford will sell treated water at 30 cents per thousand gallons and 93 to 98 meters could yield 9000 gallons for $7 monthly with 20 pounds pressure and regulators along the line. A steering committee led by local residents processes applications.
Stamford public schools observe Public School Week with an open invitation to parents to visit classes. Superintendent FitzGerald notes no school Friday due to a Texas State Teachers Association district meeting in Wichita Falls. Teachers welcome parent visits and will discuss student progress during the week. Oliver School PTA meets Tuesday at 7 30 in the cafeteria with a Texas themed program by second grade pupils.
Stamford High School seniors will sponsor a showing of Tammy and the Bachelor at the Grand Theatre on Thursday March 7. Debbie Reynolds and Leslie Nelson star. Proceeds support the senior trip. A later Senior Radio Day at EDWT follows, part of the class fundraisers.
Set Le Roy Strickland outlined Stamford National Guard reorganization into A Company of the 191st field artillery battalion. The infantry unit since 1918 will gain new commander, equipment including six heavy artillery pieces and six trucks, with command from local unit after completion. Pf. Robert Barbee has graduated Army Security Agency school and will report to Torii Station Okinawa after 18 months.
Two projects announced this week by Bill Longley raise funds for the Heart Fund drive. Coin cards and ecards will be used, to be filled and returned through schools. Saturday in Stamford will feature coffee day with cafes and drug stores collecting Heart Fund donations.
James Waggoner assistant cashier of First National Bank was elected president of the Stamford Rotary Club Tuesday. He will succeed Jimmy West and will be the club’s delegate to the Rotary International convention in St Louis. New officers include HW G Andrews Jr as vice president J F Me Culloch as secretary-treasurer Earl Smith and Wade Watts as directors. Installations occur at the first July meeting and Andrews will attend the district convention at Mineral Wells next month.
At a Stamford FHA Chapter meeting plans were made for a trip to Stephenville for the area meeting. The group will depart Friday noon March 1. FHA favorites were selected for 1962 1964 year and membership cards were issued. Ping were ordered and pen pals were distributed to all members.
January yielded 30 marriage licenses from County Clerk Roy Thorn, a monthly high surpassing last year’s July peak of 25. Deputy Hazel Dudley notes June and May usually lead, but 1962 diverged yet again. The total reflects license fees of three dollars, not the number of marriages, and many couples travel within the region to obtain licenses. Lt. Dallas Christian and family visited before his Panama assignment, splitting leave between here and Clovis New Mexico.
