Dr. Fletcher’s sermon at St John’s Methodist extols George Washington as a Christian figure. The piece argues Washington’s piety, patriotism, and moral stance, noting church attendance, slavery era context, whiskey use, and peaceful retirement after two terms at Mt. Vernon.
Final preparations finish for Stamford High School senior class play The Dutch Detective directed by Mrs. Doyle Middleton. Cast includes Otto Smultz Don Gould Plunk Jarleck Wallace Miles Leonard McNutt Arnold Glenn Maxine Rowland Viola Kennedy Hortensey Smallers and others. Music by the High School Orchestra directed by Bennie Burrow with two acts of musical numbers and a piano accompaniment.
Two trees, one for Geo Washington and one for Sam Houston, were planted by the Pierian Club on the west side of Postoffice Plaza Thursday afternoon. The event featured a reading Trees by Mary Louise McDonald, with music by the Stamford Band.
The residence of Mr and Mrs A J Bell at 802 Wells Avenue suffered heavy fire damage early Saturday with about 2000 dollars in losses to house and furniture. The origin was not determined though upholstering in the living room is suspected. The building was insured for 3000 dollars and the furniture for 2000 dollars. A vacant filling station near Highland cemetery on Highway 30 was destroyed by fire Sunday morning.
Texas ex students rush to organize reunions for March 2 as Dr. H Y Benedict, UT president, headlines banquets in Beaumont on March 1 and Houston on March 2 with faculty and alumni speaking at gatherings statewide and abroad.
Representatives from towns along Highways 1 A 53 and 15 formed the Northwest Texas Highway Association in Stamford to oppose spending on costly cutoffs. Clifford B. Jones of Spur was elected president with Harris Winston Snyder Walter Duckworth and Curt Hancock as officers as the group plans resolutions against deferred projects and drafts a neutrality request to Fort Worth and Dallas Chambers of Commerce regarding Highway 89 from Weatherford to Ranger.
A. L. Buster of Stamford recalls the 1910 Texas Christian University baseball team shown in a Dallas News picture. Buster was catcher, later played for Dallas, Houston, and in the American Association, noting eye trouble as it ended his playing career. Pitcher Paul Tyson, now Waco High football coach, was among the 1910 players who pursued pro baseball or other sports.
A ten day rain event hits Stamford starting Saturday February 1st and ends on Washington’s birthday, totaling 2.25 inches. The slow soaking moisture benefits grain and spring planting prospects, per Lois Green, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce.
Exchange Club members will bring their own lunches Friday for a noon luncheon. Lunches will be donated to the Stamford Community Chest. Albert Hess and Bennie Burrow led the plan, adopted at last Friday's meeting. Hamlin reps attended with music by Benny Burrow and C La Rue. Local and Hamlin club members discussed upcoming events and visits.
The Jonesboro Arkansas Fundamentalist Baptist Church voted unanimously to invite Rev Sam Morris to be their pastor. He expressed uncertainty about accepting the invitation while continuing ministry in Amarillo and Stamford events include meetings in Big Spring Lubbock and Happy.
L W Johnson Mrs Burrow and Boerao Huston led the day's program with iGameron Bean. President Frank Locke announced Washington's Birthday exercises in the city. A detective found a stolen diamond ring in Henry Derin's Chicago home after emptying a steaming coffee pot.
Two historic china pieces once owned by Martha Washington were shown at the George Washington Bicentennial program in the City Auditorium. The cup and saucer belong to Mrs. Robt McDonald of Stamford, descendants tracing to Sam Houston. A painting of George Washington by Mrs. WP McDonald of Stamford was also displayed.
An audience of about 100 to 144 persons attended the Washington Centennial program at City Auditorium Monday night. Dr. W G Pletcher gave the principal address praising Washington as a patriot and soldier. Mayor J K Brady presided. the program ran with minor changes from that previously published.
Forester R. C. Morrison a noted landscape architect will lecture at the City Auditorium Monday evening February 20 at 7 o clock without slides. His topic Making the meet of our Bowir onments highlights city and West Texas Chamber cooperation with Fort Worth Park Board funding. Citizens invited.
A neighborhood effort near Stamford improves a road used by the Liberty School line. Beginning at Highway 14 the half mile graveling covers the black dirt flat aiding all weather bus passage. Local farmers Cooper Ray Cox Rogers Cope land contributed gravel teams. county cost was minor for labor. Work nearly finished pending dry ground.
The Union Bus Station moved this week from its site on West Hamilton Street to the Stamford Inn lobby. Mrs Rose Bowyer of Chicago had her husband arrested for beating her on their wedding day. Doris Rucker of Dublin is visiting the families of J L Rucker and George Hudson.
The Jones county commissioners designate road routes in precinct No 2 to be built from bond funds. Projects include 19 miles of graveling in the northeast triangle between Highway 18 and county boundaries, a paving of the Sagerton road in Has kell county, and several short routes from Doed ere to Highway 84 and the New Hope or Funston road. Work will resume when weather permits after recent rain delays.
Pastor Rev W Fletcher of St John’s Methodist invites the public to a three part sermon series on Jonah and the Whale. The series opens Sunday at 7 00 pm with color photographs from Nineveh and Japan images. The talks will discuss modern church failures and encourage national righteousness.
A Rotary Club luncheon featured a Martha Washington musical program by High School girls directed by Miss Stelly Iak. Participants included Mary Louise Kinard Dorothy Ruth Culbreath Mary Fleming Josephine Pinson Grace Katherine Smith and Pauline Thompson. Bernard Bryant proposed an employment relief plan and many Rotarians pledged assistance.
