Eight finalists were announced for the Stamford Electric Cooperative oratorical contest. Girls: Vicki McCaleb Melanie Trautvetter Dee Dawn Moore Sue Chambers. Boys: Warren Dozier Eugene Davis Dewey Dudensing Tommy Bearden. Finalists vie March 1 at Stamford High School Auditorium for a Washington DC trip. The winner joins the Texas Cooperative Youth Tour with a 12 day schedule including Mount Vernon Arlington and the Capitol.

Rep Frank Calhoun proposes moving Jones County from the 104th to the 39th District. Judge J Neil Daniel currently serves the 104th, which includes Jones and Taylor counties, while the 39th covers Haskell Stonewall Throckmorton and Kent counties. The plan, backed by many lawyers, would allow concurrent jurisdiction between the two courts to speed hearings. Royce Adkins is 39th district attorney and Fd Paynter serves both the 42nd and 104th districts. Observers note the 39th workload is light and the change should not delay court work.

Leland Nauert has filed for place 5 on the Stamford School Board. Nauert, a local farmer and former biology teacher, taught in Stamford 11 years and is a Sagerton native who graduated from Stamford High School and Texas Lutheran College in Seguin. Man Indicted After Escaping From City Jail
Homer McCormick, jailed on a prior sentence, was indicted for burglary after escaping Stamford jail by crawling through the attic and entering the public works director Bob Dickenson’s office. Dwayne White was charged with marijuana possession after a death. Barbara Shorthouse faced a true bill. Fire Department Classes to Open at Stamford Fire Dept
W. B. Cotton Dorman fireman training instructor at Texas A&M University will conduct a 15 hour course in basic fire fighting for the Stamford Fire Department beginning Monday night. Sessions will be held each Monday evening at the Fire Station in City Hall. Subjects include pump theory and operation classing and extinguishing fires.

Engineers To Start Study On City Sewer Needs
