The Stamford Firemen's Band will give a free concert at 3:30 PM next Sunday in the municipal auditorium. City residents and surrounding tradespeople are urged to attend as the band plans special numbers and aims for larger audiences on Sunday afternoons.
A local Forty and Eight chapter was organized at the Vernon D. Hart Post of the American Legion Monday night with seventeen members enrolled. Temporary officers were elected: George Connell chef-de-gare C. P. Nichols chef-de-train Cecil McDaniel commissaire intendant H. V. Woodson correspondent Dr. Dallas Southard conducteur. Permanent officers will be chosen after the charter is received.
Mervin Barackman defeated Bobby Astis of Oklahoma City in one hour and seventeen minutes for the first fall in a Legion sponsored wrestling show at City Auditorium. The match, refereed by W. L. Lay, drew a good crowd and Barackman advances to face another contender next Tuesday.
J. F. Cope of the Wichita Falls C. D. Shamburger Lum Company traveled to Stamford on Tuesday for a meeting with O. G. Lewis, manager of the Stamford branch, to discuss company matters.
The Dallas Lubbock Highway Association formed at Spur last Wednesday to promote a direct north Texas to California route via Stamford. Over 100 delegates from towns along the line approved a funded plan with R L Penick as president and W K Dickinson as VP. Next meeting set for March 17 in Stamford with preparations for a state and federal officials inspection tour.
The St. Thomas Catholic Church on 8S Swenson avenue outside the city limits suffered a theft of its bell and altar cloths plus an oil heater and other valuables totaling about $750. The break in was found Monday. the church had been unused for weeks. J A Hilseher and Constable J D Crow seek the thieves and stolen items. Mr and Mrs V C Fagan and their son left Tuesday for Texarkana.
M B Oats agricultural agent for the Wichita Valley spoke to Stamford Rotary Club on last Tuesday about diversification as essential for steady income for farmers and businessmen. He cited statistics showing business conditions depend on agriculture and noted Rotary’s twenty first anniversary with a program led by Arthur Buster.
The high school basketball team elected Ickey Gay, the giant center who led as captain most of this year, to lead the Bulldogs in 1927. Gay, a star football and track athlete and regular baseball member, is poised for a brilliant athletic career and strong leadership.
Rev R A Stewart pastor of St Johns Methodist church will deliver a series of sermons on The Roads to the Quicksands and Men Who Have Taken Them. Beginning next Sunday night one sermon will be given at each Sunday evening service. The opening subject is The Man Who Deserted.
The Four County Association of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs met in Stamford with Stone Wall Fisher Haskell and Jones counties forming the group. Competitive degree work was planned for Wednesday night and sessions continued at the City Auditorium with an 11 45 a m street parade listed as a feature.
Stamford residents showed strong interest in an Albany area oil well located six miles northwest of Albany. Reported output around 1000 barrels per day. The well’s bring in promises a brighter oil-field outlook for the area. The discovery lies about 22 miles from the Adams and Moody well east of Stamford.
Excitement builds as the Brinking in of the Roeser Pendleton well on Mrs W L Cook's land in Texas Railway survey No 85 draws strangers to Albany. Authorities report output near 1000 barrels per day. Acreage demand rises and Humble Pipe Line Co rushes in material and workers Friday night.
Mrs. Daisy Bristow of Hamlin was injured when the car she rode in with her son was struck by a truck on the Hamlin road five miles west of Stamford. The truck driver fled. officers are seeking him. She improved after x rays at Stamford Sanitarium and was moved to the home of Mr and Mrs J M Alexander. The Willys Knight coupe overturned but remained largely undamaged. it belonged to her brother, Mr Matchett.
The State Railroad Commission notified the Stamford Chamber of Commerce that Wichita Valley has not yet filed an application for authority to discontinue the two night trains between Wichita Falls and Abilene. Rumors had floated for weeks that the system planned to seek such authority. Removal of the two trains would likely lay off about thirty five employees, including several residents.
A banquet for the men of St. John’s Methodist Church will be held in the church basement on Friday evening March 5. Women of the church will serve the meal.
LUEDERS The house owned by W M Williams and occupied by T Barnhill burned Sunday night on the Lueders-Anson road about five miles from town. Household contents were a total loss for the fire.
The Texas A and M College through the local agent FE L Tanner has led a two day terracing school program in Jones County since last fall. Twenty four schools trained 98 farmers to terrace like civil engineers. Forty one farm levels were bought this year and about 15 000 acres are terraced. Demand for next year could reach 20 000 acres as trained farmers meet new needs. Farmers credit the college for fulfilling the Smith Lever Act mission by placing residential instructors for agricultural instruction.
Jones county farmers, led by county agent E L Tanner, report a hog shortage affecting bred gilts demand and stocker pigs. The farming community relies on purchases of multiple pigs to raise stock, with concern spreading as the issue extends across the region.
Abilene Eagles defeated Stamford 18 to 16 to claim the district championship, ending Stamford’s bid after a season of strong road wins. The Bulldogs lost their star guard Russ Hoy and forward Bruce Moody and Rollins led Abilene with sharp shooting, while McFireath and Bea anchored defense. Prospects for 1927 look bright as Stamford graduates only one regular, with several players promising replacements.
The rooming house at Webb and Moran streets owned by A. C. Thompson was badly damaged by fire and water about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. The blaze started in a second floor room and is thought to have been caused by an oil stove explosion. The fire department quickly controlled the fire.
Mrs Avenet Buettner died Monday afternoon at her home ten miles south of Stamford. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at New Hope at two o'clock. Rev R A Stewart of Stamford conducted the service. She is survived by her husband and grandchildren.
