The Stamford city council debated renewing the airport farm lease, with Vernon Lovvorn seeking a multi year term after years of annual renewals. Community members urged a three year lease and city officials proposed a contract with clear lease specifics before bidding again.
A Stamford baseball program meeting is planned for Tuesday night March 1 at 7 30 p m in the city hall driver s license room. Interested players should contact Mrs Moss at 773 2536 by Feb 28. New board members were nominated Feb 21 including Gaylord Cook president and Curtis Cox equipment manager. Registration runs March 19 26 and April 2 with tryouts April 4 5 and season start April 25. Larry Bailiff was elected manager of the Astro s minor league team. Linda Moss urged forming a women s team and securing a field for games. Any women 18 or older may participate.
The Stamford Flea Market is postponed one week and now set for Friday and Saturday March 4 and 5. Donations continue for the Stamford Day Care Center project. Those with items to donate should contact Mrs. John Earl Anders Jr. at 773-3065.
More than 800 entries from 30 towns are registered for the Stamford Academic Meet at Stamford High School. The event runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m with an awards assembly and includes contests in number sense, slide rule, typing, ready writing, speaking, mathematics, and more.
With one week to filing in Stamford County Line Independent School District and city races, only one new contest arises for Place 5 on the school board as Billy Joe McKeever competes with Lynn White. Edward Moreno enters Place 3 against Don Starr who isn’t seeking reelection. J C Riddle seeks Place 4. Gary Mathews files for mayor with Gerald Proctor and Duayne Medford on the city ballot. Place 4 on the city council has no candidate. hospital district election sees no new filings with four incumbents seeking reelection. Two seats on the Lueders Avoca School District board face election on April 2. Incumbents W. L. Jenson and Dewey Rister are up for re election with Rister seeking another term and Jenson undecided. March 2 is filing deadline. Voting will occur at Avoca and Lueders school buildings.
Mrs. Hollis Payne of Stam ford Carnegie Library promotes the Books by Mail program which offers 800 titles to homebound residents and rural communities. Catalogs go by post in rural areas and to those who notify the library. selections are mailed at no charge with return postage at a reduced rate.
