City campaign runs March 7 to 11 to raise 3000 books for Stam ford Carnegie Library to meet a 10 000 volume requirement for Title I federal aid. People may arrange pickup by calling the library or joining service groups to collect books in good condition.

Stamford Chamber of Commerce reports 15 new members joined in the annual membership drive led by John Martin. The drive continues through February with outreach to remaining businesses to secure affiliations and rework membership cards. The total membership rises to about 150 including Cobrum Motor Co. and many local firms and individuals.
Jones County renews contract with Pritchard and Abbott of Fort Worth to prepare tax valuations on oil and gas property. The arrangement costs a set payment and the February meeting also increased hospital room provision to 50 dollars for employees with medical coverage.
The Stamford Rotary Club will hold its annual rural urban meeting Tuesday at noon at Cliff House Restaurant. W. R. Long of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, last year’s speaker, is invited to return. Norris Russell chairs arrangements. President Ro Cobb invites area farmers and ranchers as guests to show appreciation for their economic contribution. advance notice is requested for planning.
Stamford Fire Department fought a week of grass fires including a major blaze that burned 54 West Texas Utilities poles worth about 120 each, causing roughly 6480 in damages. The incident began Friday at 1 p.m. in the 100 block of S. McMillan Street near Stamford Electric Cooperative.
An empty horse trailer detached from Weldon Holbrooks at Stamford High School struck the Barron Lindsey residence across from the school. Bricks chipped outside and plaster cracked inside the corner room.
Gerald Proctor outlined Bronco Seed Co growth from its 1962 formation as Stamford Delinting and Seed Co. to a two state operation with a cotton seed delinting plant, wheat cleaning, and seed sales. Last year payroll reached 154800 with 29 employees as the firm plans a larger delinting plant.
Mr and Mrs Rudy Bremer of Highmore South Dakota are visiting her mother Mrs Fred Gray in town.
The 1972 Stamford High School track team opens with the Lone Wolf Relays in Colorado City on Saturday Feb 26 with eight area schools. Key seniors Medford McKeever and Young miss tests, while Stevenson returns from last year’s sprinting and relay runs.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce committee plans a surplus food distribution depot in Stamford for residents on an approved list. The effort mirrors a Merkel center, with space being sought in the old city Auditorium and a county-wide process to certify eligible recipients and arrange transportation.
Stamford City Council approved a $2 758.34 contract for a new Chevrolet pick-up for the water department to Cecil Cobrum Motor Co. of Stamford after six bids. Albritton Motor Co. offered the low bid but was not chosen for home-trade reasons.
The Stamford Independent School District board sees a second candidate filing for re election. Eugene Olson seeks Place 7 while John Harrell Farler files for Place 6. Filing deadline is March 2 with forms at the superintendent's office.
A nine member panel met at Stamford Memorial Hospital to discuss merging city, school, and hospital tax offices. Moderator Bob Pritchard led the roundtable. Members showed interest in efficiency but no agreements were reached and no time for a next meeting was set.
Tom Nance of Stamford attended a four day training session in Lubbock February 14 to 16. The 40 hour course was funded by a Texas Criminal Justice Council grant and run by Texas A&M University College of Engineering. A further 20 hour advanced course may be offered in September or October.
