City plans rework parking area near roadway

A proposal would add a four foot separation between the road and a twelve to sixteen foot parking strip with backing out space of 13 and 15 feet. A four foot walk may replace the planned twelve foot path to cut costs and reduce grass loss. If approved at the hearing the city council will request highway department action.

Rotarians Celebrate 50th Rotary Anniversary Ladies Night Banquet

The Stamford Rotary club marked Rotary International's 50th anniversary with a Ladies Night banquet at the Country Club attended by 126 Rotarians, wives, and guests. District Governor Warren Tayman gave greetings. past governors Ray Nichols Jim McCulloch and Bernard Bryant attended. widows of former Rotarians were honored. Bernard Bryant was master of ceremonies and Dr. Dick O'Brien delivered the address.

Stamford high school seniors host a talent show in the high school auditorium on Monday night February 7 at 7 30. Participants may contact Wanda White to join and prizes will be awarded as part of the senior class fund raising for the senior trip.

Avoca Mustangs advance to Region II B play at Brownwood after a 99 55 win over Putman. Max Williams scores 34 and Bud Shelton 27 leading the champs as they prepare for a regional playoff in Brownwood with a Friday 3 p m start against the Mertzon Four Sands winner in Howard Payne gym. Oliver Smith, who had major surgery at Stamford Sanitarium, was dismissed Saturday.

Mrs J M Wilson and Mrs Tom Smith Visit Fort Worth

Mrs Wilson traveled to Fort Worth for the weekend to visit her daughter Nancy who attends Texas Christian University. Mrs Smith visited her sister Mrs C Eakins and other relatives during the trip.

O'Steen Family Reunion Amid Illness in Texas

T M O'Steen aged 80 from Long Beach Calif was stricken Monday night during a reunion at Mrs R C Shelton home in Texas. He underwent appendicitis surgery Tuesday afternoon and is reported improving. Attending relatives include T L O'Steen of Vernon M L O'Steen and son Tommie of Abilene Earl O'Steen of Garden Grove Calif and others. The Wayne Cooper residence at 1414 Well Street was purchased by C B Andersons for future use.

Stamford Boys Enter 9 Events in County Show

Future Farmers enter nine divisions in the Jones County FFA and 4 H Club Livestock show at Anson on Saturday February 26 with judging at 830 am. Premiums total 1200 dollars. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Anson Hamlin and Stamford. Show rotates among towns with Stamford's turn in 1956. General superintendents are Larry Dooley J F Dozier and Bill Lehmberg. Classes include beef steers breeding cattle dairy cattle breeding and fat swine fat lambs and capons. Trophies donated by local chambers clubs and individuals. A 5 showmanship award will be given in several divisions. Judges include Stanley Anderson H C Stanley and W G Pritchett Sr. etc. Stamford entries list multiple exhibitors in each class.

World Prayer Day Observed By Church Women

Highway 83 Widening Contract Let in Texas

Texas Highway Department awards a contract to Collins Construction Company of Austin to widen and repave 15.17 miles of U S Highway 83 from Anson to Hamlin. Jones County Judge H G Peter Andrews announced the bid of $181,148. The road will widen from 18 to 24 feet with an asphalt overlay. bridges and culverts to get a separate contract. Construction starts April 1.

Stamford Park Board Endorses College Lake Park Plan

The Stamford park board endorsed building a park at College Lake and approved reducing the Square Park to add parking. Fannie Meeker was named chairwoman with Roy M. Craig as vice chair. Mrs. Dodson and Mrs. Gambill were reelected secretary and treasurer respectively. The board favored stone or cement park furnishings and asked the Garden Club to plan landscaping. A Parcel Post Sale was set to raise funds.

City-Wide Religious Survey To Be Held Sunday

Stamford residents are asked to cooperate with a Sunday survey sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance to assess local religious status. If at home 1 to 3 pm, a worker will call. information will go to the church chosen. The 16-area effort assigns captains and teams with a noon gathering at St. John’s Methodist for a sack lunch.

State Evangelist To Be Speaker for Brotherhood Rally

Rev. C. B. Jackson of the Dallas Baptist evangelistic staff will speak at the Associational Brotherhood rally at First Baptist Church Monday night February 28. The event opens with a 6:30 p.m. covered dish supper in Fellowship Hall, hosted by men of the church. Rod Latta of Stamford will supply the meat. District missionary Rev. L. L. Trott and Sam Reed of O'Brien will retire as district Brotherhood president and speak.

Local barber shop interest sold amid family updates

Aubrey Smith purchased walf interest in Elmer Lack's Barber Shop and is now associated with the shop. Mrs Kenneth Reber is recovering from a tonsillar operation at Stamford Sanitarium. The children stayed in Abilene with Mrs Reber's sister during the hospital stay.
