Local residents pressed the city council Friday to improve the municipal airport, arguing a modern facility would aid industry recruitment. The council noted prior surveys and a $42,000 grant request that was denied, weighing bond needs and funding options while reviewing airport revenue and costs.
Stamford High School graduate William M. Blackburn, class of 1957, was appointed to the White House Legal Staff by President Johnson on February 1. The brief notice notes his Stamford connection and new federal role.
L E Red Million Jr. was named postmaster candidate for Stamford by President Johnson after serving as acting postmaster since Jan 15 1966. A longtime civic leader, Million has held roles in the Exchange Club city council and chamber of commerce and earned military and academic honors.
Stamford Memorial Hospital increased room rates by $2 per bed effective February 13 to $14 to $20 daily. The higher wage costs under new Federal rules were cited, while the hospital remains cheaper than nearby facilities. Plans for a new hospital on Avocati Highway proceed with state and federal approvals. a company offers to purchase the district bond issue of $500,000, with sale expected soon.
Big Joey Lawson, a six foot two, 210 pound tackle from the Stamford Bulldogs, announced plans to play college football at Texas Christian University. His high school career spanned three varsity seasons as a standout lineman.
The Avoca Mustangs crushed Olden 80 to 4 with star Larry Rister out due to a wrist injury. Randy Thompson led Avoca with 26 points as Dennis Olson and David Parson added 24 each, pushing the team to 32 victories against 3 losses and into the Stephenville playoff.
Jerry Hopkins, Stamford Chamber of Commerce manager since 1966, resigned at a special meeting and will exit March 15 to take employment in Nacogdoches and pursue additional schooling. The board named a committee to find a replacement. office secretary Mrs. Lee Walker will oversee duties until a new manager is chosen.
Stamford High School singers under W. E. Mayes captured six first division superior ratings at the Snyder regional vocal contest. Six second division or excellent ratings and one third division followed. Soloists Bunky Bunkley Susan Carothers Marvin Gregory all rated superior. Groups included two quartets and two trios with multiple high marks.
Tickets for the annual All Sports Banquet honoring Stamford High School athletes are selling fast. The event, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and civic clubs, is set for March 6 at the National Guard Armory with Berl Huffman as speaker, renowned for his warhorse coaching tales.
Volunteer workers from the B&PW Club and the Lioness Club with help from sixth graders collected about 400 for the Heart Fund drive. Memorial gifts are still accepted and may be mailed to Heart Fund Box 335 Stamford with the name of the person remembered. Mrs H H Corley and Mrs Irene Stewart co chaired the campaign.
George Kinney a local mortician is chosen to head the Stamford Rotary Club starting July 1 succeeding Fareed Hassen. He currently serves as vice president with C E Bunkley nominated as vice president and L E Loveless as secretary.
