Charles Stenholm won the Stam ford Jaycee grain sorghum contest with an average of 156 pounds per acre and collected a $75 prize. Darrel Schoonmaker had 1740 pounds per acre and a $59 prize, while Tommy Schoonmaker earned $25 for 1560 pounds per acre. Twentyone boys competed. the banquet at Stamford High School featured James Lindsey and John C. White as speakers.

Mrs Jeff Davis Dies Suddenly in Stamford Home
Mrs. Jeff Davis a Stamford native died suddenly Monday about 3 30 am at the family home. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 pm at First Baptist Church with Reverends Byron Bryant and Bob Greene officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. She was born February 27 1918 and married to Mr Davis on April 22 1945. She is survived by her husband her mother and siblings. Barnett

Wallace Bosse won first prize with $100 in the Chamber of Commerce cotton growing contest held at the high school assembly. Kenneth Ivy took $60 for second, Bobbyee Byrd of Avoca earned $40 for third, and Tommy Taylor of Avoca won $20 for fourth. Five finalists received sift cotton merchandise. Twenty two entrants competed, five from Avoca. Vernon Lovvorn led the event with remarks on improving cotton production and profitability. Birger Haterius cited advances in agriculture and compared past and present farming hours and tractors.

The 1955-56 scholastic census totaled 1340 with 123 Negro and 1217 white students. The 1956-57 census totals 1407, including 107 Negro and 1300 white students, a net gain of 67 and a shift toward white enrollment.

Box car damages lumber shed in October incident
A MKT box car crashed into R. B. Spencer and Co. lumber shed on Monday afternoon injuring back wall and roof. The train jumped the barricade and struck the shed about 4 PM, causing estimated damage of $2800. A similar accident occurred last week in October 1951.
