Stamford Advertised at Rest Stop Billboard Preview

Stamford Chamber of Commerce was invited to use space at a new travelers rest stop on U S 277 about 412 miles north of Stamford. W C Thompson and Charlie Young hold a temporary poster as a permanent display is planned later. The state will supply specifications for bulletin boards. The poster promotes the Texas Cowboy Reunion Cowboy Country Museum and Stamford facilities such as hospital and churches.

Sewing machine clinic set in Stamford next Tuesday

A sewing machine clinic will be held in Stamford on February 27 at 7 p.m. in the Stamford Electric Cooperative conference room on West McHarg Street. Guest speakers Alton Robeson and Jean Templin from Abilene will discuss brands, maintenance, and techniques for denim, knits, zippers, and embroideries.

Grubbs seeks to end speeding penalty on premiums in bill

Rep. Walter Grubbs introduced House Bill 1003 to bar auto insurers from raising premiums when speeding causes no damage or injuries. The measure, referred to the Insurance Committee chaired by Rep. Bob Simpson, targets a perceived premium ripoff while noting penalties apply for damages only for up to three years after the last speeding violation.

Churches join for Lenten services here

Stamford Ministerial Alliance sponsors joint Lenten services with a four service plan before Easter. The first service Wednesday February 28 at Bethel Lutheran Ericksdahl starts at 7 p.m. Other dates include March 16 at St Ann's Catholic, April 12 at Central Presbyterian, April 13 at St John's United Methodist. Sunrise service Easter Sunday April 15 will be led by First Baptist Church.

Harvest Gains Momentum as Autumn Look Grips Stamford Gins

Area gins show an autumn look as harvest accelerates in Stamford and nearby yards. About 1000 bales await ginning Wednesday morning, with over 5000 bales harvested in the past week and the year total at 30 564. Weather hampered pickings in January and February but machines were running by Sunday afternoon. A forecast of possible rain and cooler weekend tones, while yields remain strong, with a breakdown listing several gins and their bale totals.

Stamford FFA members honored at San Antonio banquet

Stamford High School juniors Kevin Wade and senior Don Heller were among 40 Texas youths honored at the Rural Youth Honor Banquet in the Fiesta Room of the San Antonio Convention Center. Wade, recognized in Who's Who in American High Schools, holds multiple FFA roles. Heller earned the Lone Star Farmer Degree and serves in FFA leadership while showing swine and cattle.

Local man hurt Monday in home fire

A 45 year old Stamford man suffered burns to hands and face in a house fire at 510 S Haskell around 1 40 a m Monday. Pete Ruiz was reported in good condition Wednesday morning after the home was destroyed. Fire Chief Bill Lawson said a faulty space heater connection likely caused the blaze and the department also responded to several Tuesday night calls.

Hospital election expands to five voting locations in district

Stamford Hospital District board orders a hospital district election with five polling places spanning the eastern third of Jones County. Election set for Saturday April 7 from 7 am to 7 pm. Polling sites include the Stamford Youth Center, Avoca First United Methodist Church, Leeders city hall, Centerline residence Lem Ruark, and Round Mound Marcus Foster residence. Absentee voting runs from the 20th to four days before the election. Incumbent directors Joseph High, Eugene Watts, Earl Smith, and Eugene Swenson seek reelection. City races show Mayor Gary Mathews, Councilman Jim Astin, and Police Chief Duayne Medford as candidates with Gerald Proctor for a vacant council seat.

Inventor L. O. Kelley Dies at 73 in Artesia

L O Kelley 73 a noted inventor and former Stamford resident died Tuesday at Artesia General Hospital in Artesia New Mexico He was born August 4 1905 in Montgomery County Georgia married Ellen Thigpen in 1928 in Tipton Georgia He moved from Stamford to Abilene in 1977 and then to Artesia last September Funeral services are set for Friday at Temple Baptist Church with burial in Highland Memorial Cemetery Kelley held more than 15 US patents and numerous foreign patents
