The Baders visit Stamford from Monahans and locals recall long friendship ties. E C Kuykendall and Ranger Tom Hickman, linked to the Texas Cowboy Reunion, died within the month. A Congo rescue tale is recounted from an AP report.
The ASCS office in Anson disclosed the 1962 feed grain price support program. Eligible corn, barley, and grain sorghum farmers must divert acreage to conserving uses and reduce corn or grain sorghum by at least 20 percent, with barley staying within base acreage. Participation in 1962 feed grain does not affect oats and rye eligibility, unlike 1961 rules. Support is delivered via loans and purchase agreements with in-kind payments from CCC stocks, cash equivalents available, and sign-up runs Feb 5 to March 30. Parity-based prices as of Feb 2 set corn 1.20, barley .93, oats .62, rye 1.02, and grain sorghum 1.93 per unit with respective percent-of-parity levels.
Jones County Farm Bureau launches its annual drive March 1 with K G Martin of Anson touting Farm Bureau as a shield for farmers economic futures. Dues are 10 dollars and the group provides full time legislative representation. The 1962 quota is 600 member families after 572 enrolled last year.
L. E. Red Milin was named Friday by the city council to represent the city on the Disaster Fund Board. The three member board includes a Ministerial Alliance representative and a Chamber of Commerce representative. Jerry Boles is the ministerial appointee and the CofC representative is yet to be announced.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion dates were set for July 2 3 4 with night shows and a Wednesday matinee. The meeting of officers and directors confirmed plans to enlarge the quarterhorse arena for judging. Eugene Swenson serves as president of the organization.
James H. West, Stamford oil man, was elected president of the Stamford Rotary Club and will take office at the first July meeting. He succeeds Tom Adams. James Waggoner, First National Bank assistant cashier, was elected vice president and will become president in July 1963. Jim McCulloch was re elected secretary with L. E. Loveless and Thrace Prewit named directors. The nominating committee included Harry Lee Haynes F Epshaw and Horace Arledge. Mrs. D Hassen spoke of her European and Middle East tour showing colored slides.
The Stamford National Guard unit joined forces with Snyder guardsmen in rotating defense of Rotan during Operation Master Day. By early Sunday, the 36th Division alert sent citizen soldiers to Kotan to set up on a hill, with First Lt. Cooks ey as executive officer.
Stamford city council approved using park space south of Memorial Hospital for a new parking area and curb sidewalk improvements on Gould Street. The project, backed by the hospital foundation trustees including Sam Baize, aims to create a parking lot south of a reduced park with city aid possibly via land transfer or other approved methods, while outlining hospital operation as a community facility with volunteer trustees.
A jet flying over Stamford last Friday afternoon broke the sound barrier and shattered seven plate glass windows in downtown stores. Kinney Furniture Co suffered four windows, McDonald's two and Safeway one. Residential areas were undamaged.
Bill Buie executive director of Stamford Housing Authority asked Stamford city council to apply for 24 additional low cost federal housing units. He was joined by board members Herschel Kelly and Howard Price who said the board has approved the request.
Timberlake of Stamford, president of Texas Jaycees and VP of Western Republic Life, will speak at the Lueders Chamber of Commerce banquet in the school cafeteria at 7 40 P M Monday. Homer Thomas will be master of ceremonies and local students provide music. The event draws Stamford residents.
The city of Stamford slowed its pace Tuesday as John H. Glenn Jr completed three orbits. Local students watched in the science room while business owners and workers adjusted schedules to follow the mission by television and radio. Shops and downtown activity resumed after the astronaut landed safely.
In Stamford on Wednesday the district court jury deliberated in the murder with malice case against Alfredo Castoreno for the Sept. 24 shooting of John Mendez in front of the Acosta Cafe. Prosecution rested after 10 to 12 witnesses. defense cited self defense and past incident where Mendez shot Castoreno in the knee.
Post Office Inspector Vester of Abilene will speak at the six county Rural Carriers annual meeting in Stamford on Saturday Feb 24 at 6 30 PM at the Cliff House. Local officers retiring will be honored and delegates to the Texas state convention in Austin will be chosen.
