West Texas meeting draws 1550 at Stamford event

The twelfth annual Stamford Production Credit Association meeting gathered 1550 attendees from a wide West Texas area at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds last Friday. Bevan Rhea's musicians opened the program while J J F McCulloch presided over the business session with a financial report from secretary-treasurer J L Hill Jr and a director’s report from Lasater Hensley. Directors C G Burson and J Spurgeon Reeves were elected, and a nominating committee with county reps was named for next year.

Stamford to Welcome Aerocade Visitors on Saturday

The Aero cade committee of the Fort Worth Aviation Exposition arrives at Stamford Municipal Airport at 10 am with Roy Arledge leading the welcome effort. L M Hardy will assist and serve coffee and doughnuts. About 30 to 40 planes from Fort Worth participate as A C Bishop invites Haskell Hamlin Anson and Rotan aviators to greet them. Mayor A C Humphrey will welcome the visitors with Arledge replying. The Aerocade makes its second stop on the fifth and final tour, after a brief Mineral Wells halt.

Stamford Grocer Dies After Stroke

Bythell Haynes Baird 79 a Stamford merchant since 1919 died last Friday at 2 am at the family home after a stroke following months of ill health. Major Norris Russell and Wife Visit Here

Maj Norris Russell and wife Nancy Harrison visit, with Mr and Mrs A Ru and Mr and Mrs W Bee present. Russell on terminal leave expiring April 20 after 40 years in the Air Forces. He was separated from the service at San Antonio last Thursday after duty in Enid Oklahoma and service in England and the European theater.

National Advisor of Camp Fire Girls Will Visit Area

National field advisor Claire Barricks plans regional visit from February 25 to March 5 for town committee and leaders training. Training sessions proceed in Knox City Anson Stamford and nearby towns with multiple local leaders and officers attending. Rufu Phillips first class seaman and son of Mr and Mrs R K Phillips is home on a 40 day re enlistment leave. A 1945 Stamford high school graduate, he re enlisted in the navy for two years after entering service last May and being stationed on Saipan. He will report to Dallas after his leave.

W D Dubie, manager of the J C Penney store, reports nylon hose back on sale after advertising a Friday sale. Women crowded the shop from noon onward, overflowing the balcony and downstairs, shutting other business in the store.

Quota Exceeded in Old Clothes Drive

The house to house collection of clothing bedding and shoes by Tex a State Guard and local Boy Scout troops on Friday February 15 in Stamford surpassed its target. Clothings were packed and shipped to the Fort Worth central depot for use by needy people in Europe and the South Pacific.

Injury on first day of civilian job near Lubbock

Neal Brigham on his way to work in Lubbock sustains severe abdominal injuries when his motorcycle is hit by a car on Tuesday. His cousin Tom Woodson is unhurt. Brigham, recently discharged, had begun a civil service job at the Lubbock air base and was transported to Lubbock General for surgery and penicillin. Parents H F Brigham are en route. Former Resident Dies in Houston Home

J. C. Davis died February 12 in Houston at the home of his daughter Mrs. M. F. E. Allison. Allison was the former Denzil Davie. Mrs. Davis had also lived in Ireland Texas and both were longtime residents with many friends in the city.

More than 26 members from the Stamford American Legion post and Auxiliary joined the 17th District convention at Rising Star last weekend. Pack R. Bettis aged 69, longtime Stamford resident and prominent rancher, died of a heart attack at Stamford Sanitarium after illness at home. Poultry Technician to Demonstrate at Local Stores

First Steps Taken In Harmon Park Improvement Plans

Efforts to improve Harmon Park began with plantings of evergreen shrub beds laid out by Mrs. J. C. High and California Creek Soil Conservation District. Planned next steps include further draining, a southeast hedge, and lighting. The park board, formed by representatives from local clubs and groups, met at the chamber of commerce and elected Roland Kelley president, John Cannon vice president, and A. C. Bishop secretary treasurer. The city council agreed to provide supervision and tools for drainage and landscaping.

Training School Planned by Baptists in Anson

A Baptist Training Union school will be held at the First Baptist church March 3 through 7 with Miss Louise Villemain directing and Mrs. W. T. Gambill leading as director. Classes cover elementary to senior topics and include books by Mrs. Lester and Rev. Miles B. Hays. Anson hosts an Associational Training Union mass meeting led by Mr. Gambill and features local leaders and youth planning for April’s Youth Week.
