Red Cross Campaign Workers Named by Stamford Chairman

General Chairman David Ratliff names Frank Hanes to lead the business district and Mrs. Russell Crownover to head the residential district for the Red Cross drive in Stamford. A kickoff coffee is set for March 2 at City Cafe, with a kickoff dinner the prior night in Anson led by vice chairman George Harrell.

Vernon Man to Speak at St. John's Vernon Man

St. John's Methodist Church will observe national Layman's Day this Sunday at 10 30 morning service. Vernon Ray Nichols chairman Northwest Texas Conference lay activities board and president of the Methodist church in America will be the lay speaker. Rev. Marshal Rhew said the church is fortunate to have him. W. H. Terry will lead the service through the lay view.

Tax totals in Jones County through January 31 show state, county, school and common taxes at 276341.87 dollars with total charges at 293456.84 dollars and less than 6 percent uncollected. County valuation stands at 17565080 dollars with 4904 poll taxes issued and 125 underage exemptions noted.

City sells hangar at Arledge field for 8500 dollars

The City of Stamford sold the north hangar at the Arledge Flying field. The structure has been dismantled and moved to Haskell. Sale price was eight thousand five hundred dollars, paid by Bill Wilson Motor Co.

Jones County Dimes Drive Raises 2022.68

Jones County totals March of Dimes proceeds at 2022.68 dollars, 400 more than last year, as reported by C. W. Bartlett of Anson, county chairman. Funds go to the local National Infantile Paralysis Association chapter for polio-affected residents who apply to Bartlett.

Religious Census Taken By First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church conducted a religious census Sunday afternoon. Residents not at home that day are being surveyed this week. Glen Sutton, the church's educational director, leads the undertaking and expects a citywide census to be completed.

World Day of Prayer Observed by Church Women at Central Presbyterian

United Council of Church Women held the World Day of Prayer at Central Presbyterian Church with devotional program. Mrs. Byron Lewis led as program chairwoman, Mrs. Clifford B. Thomas presided, and committees were named for constitution, radio, and more. The Lord's Prayer was studied in unison as a sextet sang, offertory followed, and a tea was served in the basement.

Judges Named for Stamford Fat Livestock Show

Judges for the Stamford Fat Livestock Show have been announced. Leslie Browning, vocational agriculture teacher at Snyder High School, will judge the fat calf division and beef cattle. Mr. Burk of Seymour will judge swine and weapons. Judging starts at 9:30 a.m. on February 28 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds with bedding provided and only placed animals to be bought at the sale following the judging.

Fun for You Amateur Show by Stamford Jaycees Next Week

The Stamford Jaycees present Fun for You a community show at the high school auditorium on February 26 and 27 directed by Miss I L Kilgore. A large local cast aged from 3 to 83 performs celebrity impersonations with audience participation and acts including radio announcers and recurring skits. Various acts and contests such as a baby pageant, Good Good Neighbor nominations, and novelty programs will accompany old time dancing and western music.

VFW Auxiliary Organized At Local Hall

An auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organized Tuesday night at the VFW hall. The charter will be open to eligible members until May 17. Posts donated funds and Bible gifts, and officers were elected including Pauline McKinley as president and Georgia Smith as secretary.

Stamford Oil Find Seen As Clark Well Nearing Completion

Pan American Production Co. nears completion of the Clark ranch well near Stamford after drilling to 3100 feet in the Strawn sand with no oil found there. A 100 barrel oil discovery occurred around 2500 feet during a drill stem test, and the well is to be perforated and shot this week. Final output is estimated between 40 and 140 barrels of 40-41 gravity oil per day.

Monthly Scout Leaders Pow Wow Led By District Chairman

The Jones district held its monthly Scout Leaders Pow Wow Tuesday night at Central Christian Church with Dr. Tom Punkley in charge. Activities included demonstrations in camp packing and camp layout, a Tonkawa summer camp plan, and a Cub Scout roundtable on The Cub Scout Handyman. The district considered naming Rae Eastland as Jones district commissioner to replace A C Bishop, who is leaving for Sweetwater, with follow up meetings planned at county schools and a general assembly acknowledgment of Bishop’s service. Doughnuts coffee and milk were served.

Negro Dies After Highway Wreck in Texas

Stamford resident Clarence Iawrence Wood, 34, died at Stamford Sanitarium after injuries from a three vehicle crash near Anson at about 7 30 pm Sunday. Several others including three Abilene women and Alfred Ray Hambrick of Stamford were injured but released from the hospital. Hambrick, 17, tried to pass a car driven by John Walker Watts when his vehicle struck Wood’s car. Wood was extricated from the wreckage and transported by ambulance after delays near Corinth.

Work to Start Soon On New Ball Park

Work is to start immediately on the new recreation field south of the swimming pool. E. R. Tankersley announced Thursday morning. A contract for 3000 dollars was let to the Cyclone Fence Co. of Fort Worth for the eyelone fence. The grandstand seating 1000 is being ordered for 3855 dollars from Central Texas Iron Works of Abilene, lumber to be bought later.
