Three Seats Up For Stamford School Board Race

The Stamford Independent School District sets April 3 for three board places three four and five. Don Starr seeks place three after being appointed when Dr Harry Haynes retired. Clayton Childress runs again for place four. Absentee voting runs March 15 to 30 with election judge Richard Lane in City Hall.

Boren Receives Plaque at Lions Annual Dinner

J D Boren a city street foreman in the sanitation dept received a plaque at the fourth annual Lions Club City Appreciation Dinner held February 16 at the Chiff House Restaurant. The event honored city employees with Raymond Hollabaugh city judge as guest speaker emphasizing youth recreation needs and departmental highlights.

Henry Osment Services Held Here Sunday

Henry L. Osment 79 retired farmer died Friday in Stamford Memorial Hospital after long illness. Funeral held Sunday at Firsch Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Southerland officiating. burial in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Osment, born Sept 16, 1891 in Cleveland Tennessee, moved to Jones County in 1906, married Inez Brewington in 1919, moved to Stamford in 1957. He was WWI veteran, first manager of Stamford Electric Cooperative, later a director. Survivors include wife, daughter J E Youngquist, three grandchildren, one great granddaughter, brothers Walter and Earl, sister Mrs. Frankie Jackson.

Weldon Strong Named Chief Engineer at Stamford Memorial

Weldon Strong formerly of West Texas Hospital in Lubbock is named chief engineer at Stamford Memorial Hospital. He began duties February 15 and brings 14 years of hospital engineering experience. His family resides at 509 Hill Circle.

Safeway to Open New Store by March 29

Safeway plans to open its new store on or near March 29 with floors finished and utilities connected. Assistant manager Larry Ashorn says inspectors will visit early next week, fixtures to be installed afterward, and staff to stock mid March. Old stock will move to Safeway warehouses and the old building cleared for parking before a formal Easter grand opening.

Former Stamford Coach Named Graham Football Leader

Bill Anderson, former head football coach in Stamford, is named to the Graham coaching post and will assume duties immediately. He studied at Abilene Christian College during 1970-71 for a masters, serving as defensive line coach. Anderson spent 17 years in Stamford, 14 as an assistant and 3 as head coach, replacing Darrel Williams.

Sellers Manufacturing to Open Automatic Welding Shop Here

Sellers Manufacturing of Wakarusa Indiana will lease the Stamford Begin property for three years with option. The plant, an automatic welding shop, will build chassis for travel trailers and mobile homes and serve Holiday Industries and Coachman Industries. Local hiring of four or five workers is planned with expansion possible as operations start.

M System Food Store To Reopen Monday

M System Supermarket will reopen for business Monday February 22 at 7 30 a m with about the same staff as before the November fire owner John M Edwards says the remodeled facility retains S H Green Stamps and services Haliburton the manager notes the store will resume its pre fire schedule and employ six people five full time and one part time Seymour based chain operates stores in the area.

County to reopen 1971 budget for salary talks

Jones County commissioners announced plans to reopen the 1971 budget at their March meeting. Salaries had been discussed at the Feb 8 session with no action. If reopened, all salaries including elected officials and employees will be considered after required public notice.

ASC Manager to Speak at Young Farmers Meeting

Brack Rowland ASC office manager for Jones Counts will speak at the Young Farmers meeting on Feb 22 at 7 30 p m in the Vocational Agriculture Building on the high school campus. The Stamford group sponsors this regular monthly educational program for area farmers and interested persons. Rowland will discuss the new agricultural farm bill and its impact on farmers.

Varsity Singers to Perform Homecoming Show in Stamford

The University of Texas Varsity Singers visit Stamford for a homecoming concert at 8 p.m. on February 20. Edie Hudson Sherry Swenson and C F E Bunkley, all SHS graduates, will join the 18 member group directed by Bill White. Tickets are 125 for adults and 75 cents for students, available from seniors or at the door.
