City groups plan spring beautification efforts in Stamford
The park board and Stamford Chamber of Commerce civic improvement committee plan spring beautification during meetings last week. The city grader works west of College Lake, at the committee’s request. James High and James Warren coordinate College Lake plots for group beautification. Coins are being collected in local businesses by the park board, with Mrs. J W Frizell Jr and Mrs. W T Cambill leading.

The system covers East 16 miles West 40 to 50 miles Northwest 50 to 60 miles North 50 miles and South 18 miles, with 9 units planned. It uses the 150 megacycle band and operates line of sight like television with little static.

Lueders Woman Dies After Long Illness 55
Miss Fula Frances McNair 55, of the Bumpass Hill area between Avoca and Lueders, died Wednesday at Stamford Sanitarium where she had been a patient since December 18. Born near Eddy September 22, 1898, she was a member of Lueders Methodist Church. Funeral Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the church, Rev. C. B. Melton officiating. Burial in Bethel cemetery at Funston. Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. W. G. Sheid Dies in Wichita Falls Hospital
Mrs. W. G. Sheid aged 79 died early Monday in a Wichita Falls hospital. She was born in Melbourne Arkansas June 15 1860. Survived by children C L Fowler of Stanford and W H Flowers of Old Glory and by two sons, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services were at Mingus Baptist Church with Kinney and Son Funeral Home in charge.

Burrow Former Resident Laurie Burrow Dies at 54
Laurie Robert Burrow, 54, Anadarko Oklahoma area manager at Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, died of cancer Saturday night at Scott and White Hospital in Temple Texas. A native of Hico, he lived in Stamford earlier and served as city manager in Spur Raymondville Bonham Kerrville and engineer at Spur. He held roles with Pecos Valley Power Electric and West Texas Utilities, and was a Mason and Rotary member. Survivors include his wife two daughters Judith and Margie Godeke a son Laurie Robert Burrow Jr and a brother Ben Burrow. His mother died last May.

Mastodon Teeth on Display at Buie's Museum
Several teeth from a pre historic mastodon weighing about 12 pounds are displayed at Buie's. They were found in the Sally Kittley gravel pit eight miles southwest of Rule. Ivory like facets on the chewing surfaces are visible. Other bones have been dug up in the pit but soon disintegrate when exposed to air. An almost complete lower jaw was recovered last year from a gravel pit near Avoca, with similar finds previously unearthed in the area.

The Jones County FFA and 4 H Stock Show, jointly sponsored by Anson Hamlin and Stamford Chambers of Commerce, opens Saturday February 20 at Hamlin on the softball field.
