The Stamford County Line Independent School District board set an April 2 election to fill three expiring trustee terms. Polls run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium with candidate filing by 5 p.m. March 2 and absentee voting March 14 through 29. Election judge is Mrs. Dave.
The district manager announces toll free long distance service between Stamford and the Abilene Social Security Office. Call Enterprise 84107 by asking for Operator. The number appears in the white pages, not the yellow pages. Services include reporting changes, handling applications, and answering inquiries. The service helps due to limited monthly visits and possible long waits.
Old Glory Rural High School District will elect three trustees on Saturday April 2. Current holders are James Martin Ed Welch and Jack Jones. Filing deadline is March 2. Stonewall County boards in Precincts 1 and 2 to elect B A Erdman and Lee Roy Vanderworth.
Stamford Flea Market proceeds go to Stamford Day Care Center. Donations of items are welcome and can be picked up or delivered by calling 773-3065. Event runs Feb 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All items are welcome.
The Rev. Don Hampton missionary to Indonesia will speak at Temple Baptist Church 309 East Campbell Sunday Feb 20 at 6 p.m. A slide presentation on Indonesia will be shown. Hampton travels in the United States on deputation to raise support and is with the Missions Board of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International.
Stamford FFA Chapter joins 894 state chapters and 56,000 members celebrating National FFA Week Feb 19. Activities support the theme Agriculture's NEW Generation. Washington's birthday is observed as the patron saint of the FFA. The FFA promotes leadership, cooperation and citizenship among high school vocational agriculture students.
Stamford Young Homemakers sponsor the annual March of Dimes Mothers March set for next Monday at 5 p.m. Gather at 4:30 p.m. in the Home Economics Cottage at Stamford High School. Babysitters provided. proceeds aid birth defect research.
The Stamford Boy Scouts Pack 139 held a Pinewood Derby at the Youth Center with 27 participants from five dens. First place honors went to Mike Bryan and Chawn Cooper for best race car and best show car, respectively, with den mothers Beverly Bryan and Sandra Stephens among the leaders.
Stamford Baseball Program officers managers coaches and all interested persons gather at 7 30 p m Monday Feb 21 at City Hall in the second floor drivers license room to elect new officers and discuss the program health and future plans.
With less than two weeks to the April 2 filing deadline for city, school and hospital district elections, several incumbents filed. City council Place 5 was opened by Carl Swenson’s decision not to run, Gerald Proctor of Bronco Seed Co. filed for Place 5, while Police Chief Duayne Medford sought reelection and Gary Mathews announced mayoral candidacy. Mayor I. F. Hudson will not seek reelection. In the school race one incumbent J. C. Riddle filed. Don Starr and Billy Joe McKeever did not disclose plans. All four hospital board incumbents filed for reelection with no opponents listed.
The Stamford Ministerial Alliance announces shared Lenten services among St. Ann's Catholic St. John's United Methodist Central Presbyterian and Bethel Lutheran. Ash Wednesday Feb 23 services at 7 p.m. at St. Ann's and Bethel Lutheran with a rotating schedule through April 6. Communion on April 7 at St. Ann's and St. John's at 7 p.m.
A stocker cattle meeting led by Extension livestock specialists from Texas A&M University and local professionals is set for 7 30 p m Monday February 21 at City Hall Stamford. Dr Whitney Rounds Kirby Clayton and Dr David Ballard will address stocker cattle care health issues and management inviting all interested attendees.
Stamford Day Care Center switches to a new eligibility scale from the State Welfare Department after discovering the prior code overstated enrollments. The change impacts staff sizes and enrollment actions. The chart lists family sizes and monthly income thresholds with additions per extra member and a two to three percent weekly payment rule for households below thresholds.
Hamlin resident Margie Lucille Higgs was named Jones County tax assessor-collector after county commissioners interviewed seven applicants. Higgs will start in March to replace Roy L. Lane who resigned for health reasons. Judge Leon Thurman announced the decision. Higgs previously worked at a local credit union and for Timex. Her term runs until the next general election in 1978.
