Minister H. W. Wrye announced a union revival to begin Sunday March 12 at the Stamford Church of Christ. Churches in Jones Haskell and Stonewall counties will join in the soul-winning campaign with Stamford members coordinating efforts.
Miss Sue Bonner announces sub irrigation demonstrations on February 20 at 2 30 pm on Mrs C Heald farm and February 21 at 2 30 pm on the B L Whaley farm in Davie community. County and Home Demonstration Agents will show tile laying and tile making. Four H bedroom demonstrators from Anderson Chapel Golan Wise Chapel Swan Chapel Avoca are entered in the state bedroom contest through June 1 1933. County scoring by A M College will judge lighting walls woodwork furnishings and comfort. County winner may earn a trip to the Farmers Short Course in July.
The Exchange Club organized the program for the Rotary Club luncheon on Tuesday. Earl Johnson introduced the performers and speaker, with Miss Jeanette Boston and Holland Griggs providing a violin duet. Stamford Music Club led by Mrs. R. R. Baird sang, with Mrs. Phy at the piano. Griffin High member Griffin High delivered an eloquent address on music.
The B. Yates Drug Store reopened under the same management after a sale by the receiver. Crowdus Drug Company of Dallas sold it to the Yates brothers who will operate it as B. Yates Drug Store.
Scout Birthday observances honor Boy Scouts at St. John's Methodist Church with a 10 55 service led by Rev. C R Hooton. The program highlights youth leadership, future plans, and the YPD, with Sunday school at 9 45 and Young People's Meetings at 6 30.
R H McDuff driver of the Dixie Bakery truck in Abilene died at West Texas Baptist Sanitarium at 5 p m Wednesday from injuries after his truck left the road and burned two miles north of Abilene He started from Abilene on a run to Anson Stamford and Hamlin at 6 20 a m and was found by R L Young of Abilene He was thrown clear of the flaming car Funeral services were held at Bethel at three o'clock Thursday He is survived by his wife two children a sister Mrs George Free of Weinert and relatives in Stamford He formerly lived in Anson
The Stamford Fire Department received a $10 check and a cordial letter from Anson expressing appreciation for Stamford’s aid during a serious fire in Anson about two weeks earlier. Stamford responders arrived as the fire was under control.
"Uncle Ben" Cullum a veteran Penick Hughes Company employee near Stamford became ill at the store Monday and was treated at home. He regained consciousness and showed improvement by Wednesday. Doctors said the illness was not serious. Cullum has worked in the hardware line in Stamford for about 30 years.
Stamford likely to host a Freeman Hampton Oil Corporation refinery within city limits pending location. The project would provide steady jobs for at least eight families and boost railroad cargo, with crude oil sourced from Shackelford County fields as a distribution point for refined products.
Dr. Dallas Southard spoke at the Stamford Exchange Club urging immunization for all children entering Stamford public schools against typhoid smallpox and diphtheria. He proposed a school board resolution requiring immunization before admission and cited a Ft Worth test case as legal authority. He noted the April trustees election and urged voters to back pro compulsory immunization candidates. Dr. A Blackwell, local dentist, attended as guest.
A gunman opened fire at President elect Roosevelt in Bayfront Park Miami wounding Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak and three others including Mrs Gill and a Secret Service agent. The attacker claimed he would kill presidents and officers. he was captured and jailed.
Ex county commissioner Lucian Keen of Hamlin aged a long-time West Texas public servant died in Mineral Wells after months of treatment. Funeral services were held at Hamlin Baptist Church, burial in Hamlin cemetery, with Barrow Funeral Home arranging. Survivors include two sisters Salone Keen and Mrs Aut Dial, two brothers S C Keen and Willard Keen, a son Morton Keen, and a granddaughter.
Investigations assess how much air mail and express business Stamford could generate if planes stop there. If sufficient activity can be promised the Fitzgerald Brothers Aviation Corporation may extend the new line from Sweetwater to Fort Worth to include Stamford.
A large congregation heard H W Wrye quote Matthew 25 on the Ten Virgins and warn that death is the mortgage due on the soul. He used a firehouse illustration to stress readiness and cited multiple Bible verses about salvation and timely faith. Two Young People’s Class members confessed faith at the close.
A South American Adam and New York heiress Eva star in the Senior Play at the High School Auditorium tonight at 8. Peggy Elliott and Curtis McElhaney lead a strong cast including Elizabeth Wiseley Homer Candle Bernice Rosenwasser Victor Davis and others under director Mrs Dayle Middleton.
Rev. Sam Morris urges a March 5 all day fellowship at First Baptist with eight AM start and hour of music by Rev. C. R. Hooten. A church supper, orchestra, pipe organ recital, surprise, and radio program on KGKO are planned, with participation invited from nearby towns.
Mrs G L Eslinger aged 86 died at the home of her daughter Mrs W Fuqua Saturday at 3 30 am. She had lived in Stamford over ten years and previously resided in Abilene. Funeral services were held at 11 am Saturday at R A Fuqua’s home with Rev C R Hooton officiating. Burial followed in Highland cemetery beside her husband. She is survived by daughter Mrs W W Fuqua two sons R A Eslinger of Plainview and J L Eslinger of Canyon City Colorado and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Cotton ginning in Stamford for the 1932 crop totals 22 966 bales. About 500 bales remain to be ginned and the process is expected to finish by March.
G. G. Flournoy recently announced his candidacy for re election to Stamford Chief of Police in the April 4 city election. He cites a long police career with minimal lawlessness and strong efforts in pursuing criminals and delivering justice. He promises to do his best again if re elected.
Funeral services for Anders Johan Gustafson known as Strid were held Friday February 10 at 11 am at the Swedish Lutheran church with Rev. Hugo B Haterius officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Survived by two brothers and three sisters, he died February 8 at age 72 from a heart attack.
All Stamford & Western Gas Company employees gathered at the local office for a quarterly meeting. L. M. Scholl L. E. Myrick and Mr Cus ter spoke on division plans for 1933. Attendees from multiple towns discussed supplies and customer service objectives.
Rev C R Hooton announces a week long Standard Training School at St John’s Methodist Church from February 26 to March 3. Four credit courses will be offered with approved instructors from Lubbock Big Spring Chillicothe and Haskell. Enrollment is open to anyone over sixteen and books are available at the church.
The Chisholm Trail area Boy Scouts finance committee will meet at the Stamford Inn tonight to outline plans for the coming year. Attendees include Dr. E. P. Bunkley R. A. Bible T. A. Upshaw from Stamford and executives from Shumway Abilene Haskell Albany Winters and Anson among others.
