The war department reports no word on 1st Lieut Willis Terrell Petti John infantryman missing in action in Belgium since December 17. His wife the former Rudine Clark awaits word from military authorities.
Tech Sergeant Carl Corley arrived in Florida after serving overseas in the China Burma India theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on January 12 and holds other honors. His wife and parents, Mr and Mrs Chas Corley, await his arrival.
Lt. Henry G. Andrews known as Pete is home on a 15 day leave with his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Andrews. He graduated February 10 from the Army Air Forces Navigation School at San Marcos Army Air Field with commission and aerial navigator wings. His uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Harris of Sweetwater attended the graduation. He will report back to San Marcos for reassignment. He entered service February 1949 after beginning law studies at the University of Texas and had completed coursework for a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at UT at the end of the first semester of that year.

Mr and Mrs John Trimmier received the President's citation for their son Pfc Billy Joe Trimmier USMC who died in action at Saipan Island Marianna Islands on June 17 1944 The citation honors his sacrifice and memory noting he died for freedom and lives in the country’s enduring patriot line
Mrs. C. B. Billingsley travels to Portales New Mexico after a message that her nephew Durwood Haynes Wright, prisoner of the Japs, has died in Luzon. Wright was son of Mrs. Durwood Wright, sister to Billingsley, who formerly lived in Stamford and was known there.
Staff Sergeant John Bryant returns from Maxwell Field in Montgomery Alabama and arrives Tuesday to spend furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs R B Bryant.
Pte. George Lee Terry is home on a one day furlough after eight days traveling. He was transferred to the Air Forces in December and is stationed at Geiger Field near Spokane. Parents listed as Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Terry.
The city charter amendment approved by 90 to 40 in a Tuesday election allows the council to draw up to 30 cents per $100 of property value from the general fund to support the Chamber of Commerce and Board of City Development. The total 130 votes came in steadily.
Clyde C. Westfall names 1945 committees for Stamford Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce. Listings include Advertising and Publicity, Aviation, Agriculture, Civic Improvement, Community Health and Safety, Legislative, Highway and Transportation, Industrial, Oil Activities, Military Affairs, Ticket Sales, Retail Trade, Post War, Community Coordination, Religious Activities, and numerous chairmen and members.
Cobb's Department Store undergoes a major interior rearrangement to create more space and improve shopper convenience. The ladies ready to wear section moves to the rear balcony, while the shoe department expands across the back main floor and the office shifts to the front balcony. Manager L L Webb oversees the changes.
The Oliver Street Parent-Teacher Association invites all to a silver tea on Thursday February 22 at the president Mrs Robert L Harrison’s home 522 North Swenson Avenue. Tea hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Members and neighbors urged to attend.
The Pierian Club will sponsor a father and son banquet at the high school cafeteria on Friday night February 23. All fathers and sons are invited to attend or men may adopt a son or father for the event. Tickets cost 75 cents and Mrs. J V Frizell Jr is in charge of sales.
A male quartet from Abilene Christian College performed at the Rotary Club meeting in Abilene. Members were Ray MacGlothlin Jr, Robert Page, Jack McKinney, and Tex Stevens. Safety speaker Ray Marshall of West Texas Utilities outlined safety. K K Francis led the program.
A Jones County Selective Service Board group went to Dallas for pre-induction physical examinations. The long list includes Henry Bearden, Delma Shelburne, John Shamburger, Vernon Melton, Elmer Daniel, Curtis Ford, James Branscom, George LaBaume, Thomas Johnson, and many others. The event signals the draft preparation activity of the local community.
A February 7 noon meeting of city ministers organized a ministerial association. Officers elected include Rev. Miles B. Hays president Rev. A G Fitzgerald secretary treasurer and a policy committee comprising Rev s J O Quattlebaum Clifford B Thomas and Mary Fulton to draft rules and regulations. Regular meetings set for the first Wednesday of each month with extra meetings at the president’s call.
Local clubs and organizations add contributions to the Camp Fire Girls drive. Since last week the American Legion Auxiliary $5, B&PW Club $5, Pierian Club $10, Reynolds Street PTA $5, plus other business and individual gifts bring the grand total to 801.78. Donations can be mailed to J. H. Ashcroft or the Chamber of Commerce office.
Cpl. George Hubert Glenn of Chickamauga Georgia nephew of Mrs Miles B Hays was killed in action on January 73 after being reported missing in France the family has been notified.
The men's Brotherhood Sunday school class of the Methodist Church held a fellowship meeting and supper Wednesday night. Women of the WSCS served the meal. Plans were made to increase attendance of the class and the Sunday school. J. E. Bingham presided, C. B. Anderson led hymn singing, and Rev. J. O. Quattlebaum, the pastor, was principal speaker.
About 500 guests attended the Stamford Chamber of Commerce annual banquet at Roundup hall last Thursday night. Clyde C Westfall was elevated to the presidency succeeding A M G Swenson. Four new directors were chosen H G Andrews E R Pace S J Hodge and R C Ricks. The program featured Gen Heselbower and other dignitaries as well as entertainment from Camp Barkeley and local groups.
A C Bishop, Hermleigh schools superintendent for nine and a half years, will assume the post of manager of the Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce on March 1. His wife and son Don will move with him. The announcement came at the Chamber banquet last Thursday.
Seven seniors are missing from Stamford High School's senior class list published last week in The American. Omitted students include Sallie B. Cungus Nacomas Daniel Betty Jo Tunnell Dan Bunkley Lewis Hatfield Robert Howse and Emil Mueller.
The Mattson Roberts singing class will perform in Plainview Has kell county Sunday afternoon at about 2 30 o clock.
The American urges subscribers to verify the expiration date name and address on their labels after year end renewals. Notify the office of any errors using a government postal card. Newspapers are mailed weekly and may not be forwarded by the post office when addresses change.
Forrest Gambill son of Mr and Mrs W T Gambill of this city will receive his Master s degree in Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder on February 22 He and his wife and baby reside in Boulder and plan to return to Texas after graduation He will become director of band at Midland High School on February 26 Mrs Gambill traveled to Boulder to visit and will join him for graduation Mrs Gordon Hayes sister of Mrs Gambill traveled from Big Spring for the graduation but returns after word that her husband died of wounds in Germany Her mother Mrs Dick O Brien and late Carl Philip Hayes left by plane from Big Spring to be with her
Stamford women will join in the World Day of Prayer observance at Central Presbyterian Church Friday February 16 at 3 p.m. All women are invited to participate.
Charles Markham, active vice president of the First National Bank, has resumed duties after nearly three months away recovering from injuries in an automobile accident.
Pvt. Gordon Haynes Jr., infantryman, died February 1 of wounds in Germany after 100 months in service and six months overseas. He served as a light mortar operator, trained at Camp Roberts, and had family in Big Spring and Stamford. His wife Marie O'Brien and two children resided with her parents in Big Spring. His younger brother, Staff Sgt. Harry Lee Haynes, was a POW since August 23.
D H Department Store will reopen Saturday under new owners H L Davis of Rotan and Marvin Hinds of Stamford. They bought from D Hassen, who started the store 21 years ago. Hassen family will stay in Stamford and retire from business. Hinds sold his cleaning plant to J R McDaniel, who will relocate to East Hamilton building and aim to open by March 1.
Material for 300 army kit bags has been received at the Red Cross production room and workers are urgently needed to complete this heavy quota. Mrs FE R Clark said Tuesday. The room will be open 1 to 5 p.m. on Westnenay and Thursday afternoons.
Waste paper collection will be held in the Stamford south part this Saturday. Residents should tie and stack paper at the curb by 9 a.m. on Hamilton Street for pickup.
