A large crowd enjoyed the High School Auditorium performance of The Pajama Girl last Friday. Dorothy Baker played the pajama girl and Don Sadler the assistant district attorney in a mystery with a federal agent reveal. The cast delivered strong portrayals with minor fault noted in the final act.
Reader letter from John C. Turner of Jones County argues that cutting automobile license fees would deprive rural Texas counties of funds for road building and maintenance. He warns many counties rely on these fees, affecting roads and school transport, and urges retaining current licenses to support rural infrastructure. Charles Herbert Hubb McAlister, 52, was crushed to death when an overturned truck trapped him and two others for over an hour on a rural road five miles east of Stamford. Survivors include his wife, one son Willie, two daughters, three grandchildren, two sisters, and five brothers. Funeral held at Kinney Funeral Home with burial in Rockdale cemetery.
Margaret Shannon, eighty, died at her son J F Shannon’s home after a lingering illness. Funeral services led by Rev C A Anderson of the Nazarene church Stamford were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Roberts Church north of Haskell. Burial followed in Roberts Cemetery. Arrangements were by W N Kinney Funeral.

DeLoss W. Walker, national Recovery crusader, spoke at a Stamford Inn joint Rotary and Exchange Club meeting to urge confidence, credit extension, and immediate buying to foster national prosperity. Franke Locke introduced Walker to about 75 attendees, and a mass meeting was planned for 7 30 p m. in Stamford City Hall with a Rotary celebration set for February 23 at Sweetwater.
Abilene prosecutor W. J. Cunningham announced his bid for re election as district attorney for Texas 104th judicial district. He thanked supporters and pledged diligent service and full campaign effort while continuing to perform official duties for the state.
A Chevrolet coupe owned by C. A. Williams of Avoca was stolen from the south side of the square between 7 and 9 30 p m Saturday. Williams had attended a show and found the car missing on return though it had not been locked. No trace of the vehicle has been reported.
Mrs. J. M. Moon 78 a Jones county pioneer died at her South Swenson Avenue home. Funeral held at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. W. D. Fielder and Rev. J. H. Skiles officiating burial in New Hope cemetery beside her husband. Survived by six children twenty three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Oliver Crump A W Ferguson A M Conant R J Pewitt L A Carlson and Richard Bushell. Funeral home W N Kinney arranged services.
Esther Harrell of Swan Chap 4-H Club acts as Food Preservation Demonstrator and plans to can family vegetables, organize a pantry, and budget meals. She and her mother built a storage closet costing $10, with shelves, two doors, and ceiling reach. Additional pattern training for Wardrobe Demonstrators began at Mrs. J. G. Heald’s home on February 3 with attendees from multiple clubs to learn foundation patterns and future local schools.
Wannelda Gray six months died at the sanitarium from pneumonia complications. She was rushed to the hospital and died minutes after arrival. Funeral by Rev. A. S. Hoolis at Aspermont Cemetery, arranged by Osment-Barrow Funeral Home. Survived by parents Bill and Mrs. Gray and two brothers Billie Wayne and James Wayland.
Mayor E P Bunkley stated City Council support for remodeling the Carnegie Library at a Saturday City Auditorium meeting. Plans discussed include seeking Carnegie Foundation aid, rebuilding with CWA workers, or reducing the building to one story to save the foundation. A women’s committee will address the council Friday and rural districts pledged help.
The town reports over 800 rats killed as CWA trappers claim success in a rodent eradication drive. Traps crush rats instantly while poison baits finish the rest and carcasses are burned on pyres. Exterminators warn rats could multiply rapidly if not checked.
George C Harrell announces candidacy for Jones County Clerk noting he is a lifelong local resident, World War veteran, former Eastland banker, and experienced with clerical work. He emphasizes taxpaying family roots and seeks voter inspection and approval. Mrs B Cafurrow to present pupils in musical recital at First Baptist Church February 16 at 7 30 PM.
W. W. Fuqua died suddenly at his home near Stamford at age 70. Funeral services were held Sunday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Joel V. Grimes and Rev. A. R. Hooton officiating. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, seven daughters and five sons, plus 27 grandchildren.
Three Rochester youths aged 20 to 23 were arrested Sunday on forgery charges for cashing a forged $7.50 check drawn on Gordon Haynes with the signature J. W. West. They were released on bond pending court. A second bogus $22.50 check cashed by R. B. Buie Sunday prompts police to hunt the casher.
Lueders P T A will hold its fifth regular meeting at the school auditorium on Wednesday February 21 at 3 30 PM. The program marks the 87th birthday of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. The junior choral club debuts this season with songs and a play titled A Dream of the Past A Glimpse of the Future plus selections from the Lueders orchestra and a short drama Ideal P T A Birthday Cake. County nurse Miss Williams seeks interest in a diphtheria immunizing clinic and life serum attendants are asked to attend.
The Chamber of Commerce employment bureau in the City Auditorium has several calls for unemployed men and women. Those seeking stenographic Typing house and yard work should register at the chamber, as current street addresses are needed to place workers.
Stamford high school orchestra debuted publicly at the Senior play last Friday night. Eight of nineteen members are in their first year. Director Dick Rowland is pleased with progress and is holding two rehearsals weekly.
