License Plates Now on Sale in Stamford

Automobile license plates have been on sale in Stamford for about 10 days with brisk initial sales and a tapering trend. Plates are available at the county tax collector's office in Anson and at Upshaw and Upshaw Insurance in Stamford. Numbers run DF 4025 to DF 2999 and DH 10 to DH 274.

Make-Up Polio Vaccine Set For Sunday At City Hall

A make-up Sabin oral polio dose clinic is planned for Sunday afternoon at city hall for residents who missed last Sunday's session. No high school gym session this time. Mrs. Lee Walker reported 3 450 doses given Sunday afternoon and 750 at Lueders. No charge for the vaccine. a free will offering is accepted.

Jones County aims to raise funds for Screwworm eradication

The Jones County Animal Health Committee met in the county courtroom to urge livestock producers and committee members to raise an additional 1500 to reach the $8918 quota for the Screwworm Eradication Program. Funds deposited locally and mailed slips support the effort as Myatt warns Texas could lose federal and state aid if the target is not met.

Pioneer Physician Dr F E Hudson Dies at 66

Dr F E Hudson a pioneer Jones County physician died at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a heart attack at 11 10 a m Wednesday Burial will be at Blighland Cemetery following Friday 10 a m funeral at Central Presbyterian Church Rev Jerry Boles will officiate He was born Oct 14 1882 in Sherman Texas and practiced in Anson until moving to Stamford in 1911 He served as a WWI Medical Corps captain and held multiple medical and civic roles Survivors include his widow son Ike Hudson two brothers four sisters and four grandchildren

Funeral Services For W. C. Carlton Held Tuesday

Walter C. Carlton 84 a resident of the Tuxedo community since 1914 died at Stamford Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 30 p m at Tuxedo Baptist Church with Rev. Two Men File For Stamford County Line ISD Board

Two candidates filed for seats on the Stamford County Line Independent School District board. Eugene Swenson seeks re election while Joseph High a local florist runs for the other vacancy. Weldon Walker who has served since 1952 will not seek another term. Filing deadline is March 1.

Stamford High School will host an open house for its new vocational agriculture building on Sunday February 24. Poll Tax Payments in Jones County Show Big Drop

Poll tax payments in Jones County fell about one fourth from last year. Tax Assessor-Collector A. J. French reports receipts issued to 2,548 people and 26 exemptions, including two aliens. Some lake Fort Phantom residents require annual exemptions under local law for towns over 10,000.

Winter Weather Halts Stamford Activities Monday

Old King Winter returned with snow and ice after a brief warm spell. Stamford area schools and many events were canceled or postponed including the Jaycees banquet and Texas Municipal League meeting as moisture measured .21 inch. Farmers expect benefits for wheat and pasture as soil moisture deepens despite travel hazards. Temperature rose to the upper forties by midday after a cold start.

Methodist Youth Retreat At St John's Church

The Stamford District Methodist Youth Fellowship will hold an overnight retreat at St John's Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Registration and room assignments are 5 to 6 Saturday evening. Attendees are grades 9 through 12, with a $1.50 fee covering meals and refreshments, and overnight stays arranged with local host homes. Dr George Steinman of McMurry University Abilene will speak, Rev Rex Mauldin of Munday leads the program.

Reynolds School library to display new books week of Feb

Reynolds P-TA launches a nonprofit book drive for the Reynolds School library. Books will be on display February 18 to 22 with P-TA members on duty during school hours to assist. Evening hours 7 to 9 on Thursday and Friday welcome working parents. Coffee served. Parents may donate books in a child or adult name to meet state requirements. Oliver School families receive a special invitation to view and purchase for the Reynolds library. Mrs Leo Hardin chairs the effort.

Rotary Banquet Speaker Champions Service as Business

George W. Bailey minister of College Church of Christ spoke at Stamford Rotary Club ladies night, urging service as the most noble business. He contrasted American life with world views and said the greatest contributors are those who make service their business. The event at Cliff House featured Valentine decor, Ballad for America music, and 100 to 110 attendees including Mayor Ek R. Kelley and civic club presidents.
