Heavy region rain boosted Lake Stamford by about two feet after 2.24 inches fell in Stamford last week raising the year total to 3.07 inches. Lueders and Anson saw six inches, with Lake Stamford gaining roughly a billion gallons and water level readings moving from 1406.8 to 1402.2 feet.
The annual Chamber of Commerce banquet is set for April 26, announced by Chamber manager Lee Walker. Santa Fe executive Bert Huffman, former Texas Tech coach, will speak, with Walter Jetton of Fort Worth handling the meal. Huffman’s Texas coaching background is highlighted.
Walter Carroll Clevenger 70 a Lueders resident since 1916 died Monday at 6 30 am at Stamford Sanitarium. He had been ill about two weeks and was transported by Kinney ambulance. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm at Lueders First Baptist Church with burial in Lueders cemetery. He was born September 2 1880 in Dark Arkansas and married Ida Butler in Eastland July 29 1910. Survivors include wife a son Harlon Clevenger of Hot Springs Ark five daughters Evie Jordon Ida Belle Fletcher Mary Jordon Elizabeth Ruton and Ima Weir a brother Jack Clevenger Sam Jesse a sister Ola Nelson 18 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Monday night March 4 Stamford Camp Fire Girls and Bluebirds hold their annual father daughter banquet. Tentative site is Roundup Hall at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds. Girls prepare sack lunches to share with their dads and then perform an entertainment program.
The DeLuxe Motel changes hands as Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Martin announce the sale to new owners Mr. and Mrs. Walter Randall of Dallas. The Martins have operated the North Swenson motel for ten years.
Fashion Confections opened at Stamford Country Club with gumdrop trees and candy themed details. Models from Stamford merchants paraded on an elevated platform while Eleanor Watson hosted and Garth McCallum provided music. Guests enjoyed sandwiches cake and coffee as Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Mills hosted and merchants including Atha's B and H Dress Shop Hands Shoes J M McDonald’s J C Penney Cobb’s supported the event.
Building permits for 1956 in Stamford reached 277400 dollars, with 168800 dollars for business and public buildings including the Church of Christ on South Orient Street and the Stamford Production Credit Association on East Hamilton Street. Residential permits totaled 92300 dollars, while additions and improvements added 16300 dollars. 1956 marked the sixth consecutive drought year, according to Dick Rowland.
Bud Wilkinson head coach of Oklahoma University will headline the Stamford football banquet hosted by the city’s civic and service clubs. The event at the National Guard Armory starts Tuesday night March 5 at 5 p.m. Roy McAnear chairs the event for the Exchange Club with Upshaw handling Rotary and Chamber of Commerce duties.
The Avoca Mustangs beat the Stamford Bulldogs 65 to 54 last week on their home floor and will play again Friday night on the local floor. Freshman game at 6:50 followed by varsity. admission 25 and 50 cents. Milton Martin led Avoca with 29 points. Dallas Christian scored 23 for Stamford. Avoca led through every period. Monday night Stamford plays at Coleman.
The Senior Class of Stamford High plans a cake sale Saturday morning starting at 9 oclock in front of J M McDonald Co store. Homebakes cakes will be sold.
Visitors from 19 towns joined Stamford’s Central Christian Church for a day of worship and fellowship marking its 50th year. Rev. Thurman Morgan of Texas Christian University led the morning service, with later concerts and a booklet on church history. The event drew guests from Brady Fort Worth Dallas Abilene San Angelo Wichita Falls Midland Graham Breckenridge Albany Spur Haskell Rule Knox City Hamlin Rotan Avoca Anadarko Chickasha and Stamford.
Raymond Hammer, a Pontiac dealer, underwent surgery at Stamford Sanitarium Tuesday morning and is improving. He had been in the hospital earlier for examination and treatment and returned there again in the latter part of last week.
Retail Trade group will meet at the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday morning February 20 at 8 30 a m to discuss general interests. Business holidays for the coming year will be set and whether to hold a sales promotion school will be discussed. Herman Cox chairs the committee and Pete Dobbins is director.
The city of Stanford reached an agreement with the Scott estate to buy about 30 acres for the state park on Lake Stamford south shore. The deal, approved by the state park board last fall, covers lake frontage and a small inlet. Mayor W. B. Harrison and City Manager Harry Steenson met Archie Scott in Abilene Saturday. the price is $100 per acre.
Charles Tilford Buie 77 of Itasca died February 9 from a heart attack. He lived in Stamford 1904 12 then helped start the Texas Implement and Carriage Co in Ft Worth. Later he moved to Itasca to build a chain of stores and was a Baptist layman and contributor to the Texas Baptist Foundation. He was buried Monday at Itasca Cemetery after services at First Baptist Church Itasca.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee presided over selling 37 capons after the Jones County Livestock Show in Hamlin. Capons were dressed, processed, and sold to buyers. weights ranged five to eleven pounds. Owners listed include Bobby Dickenson John Schoonmaker Jerry Washburn Ronnie Reid John Bill Oman Carol Sue Hinze Charles Stenholm and Billy Bob Beil.
Joy McAnear district superintendent of Service Pipeline Company travels with Mrs. McAnear and two company staff members Earl Kessner of Albany and J M Cunningham of Haskell to Tulsa Oklahoma for a Corrosion Technician school at Hotel Mayo. They plan to return Saturday afternoon.
Stamford Cotton Oil Mill suffered an estimated 33000 loss when a hull house filled with cotton seed hulls burned Monday night. The 60 by 140 foot frame building and machinery were destroyed. fire was discovered about 940 pm. Cause undetermined. Firemen fought the blaze with limited water capacity, preventing spread to nearby structures. The hulls smoldered through the night. The mill is part of Ruleington Cotton Oil Co with headquarters in Stamford.
A style show using children from Reynolds Street Oliver Street and Junior High schools will headline the Founders Day tea at Oliver school cafetorium Tuesday afternoon February 19. Proceeds go to the state Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Billy Roy Macon, son of Mr and Mrs Cleo Macon, phoned his parents from Ulm Germany Saturday night. He has served one year in the infantry and marked his anniversary on Saturday. Macon has been in Germany seven months and said the line was clear and the call cost four dollars per minute plus tax. The conversation lasted four minutes.
Judge James Hart told Stamford Rotarians that the United States must maintain a firm purposeful foreign policy. He noted the need for democratic faith and responsible government while stressing duties from executive action to treaty approval and funding.
