Water from Lake Stamford was released for the first time on Tuesday. The 50 acre feet released meets a request from the Texas Water Board after landowners along Paint and California Creeks complained of poor creek water quality. City officials note seepage accounted for normal Paint Creek flow, but landowners persisted, prompting a special council session and the release. The 50 acre feet equals about one month’s city usage.

City Buys Garbage Truck and Containers in Stamford
The Stamford city council approved a new garbage collecting truck chassis with a Packmor body and up to $1,000 in containers. Garrett Chevrolet Co. won the truck bid at 4,653.77 dollars. Packmor will install the packer body for 5,145 dollars and supply the containers. Containers will be leased to firms with collection fees. The system allows the truck to pick up and empty containers downtown, saving time. If local production can reduce costs without patent issues, the city may switch after initial purchase. The total cost is about 1,200 dollars under the original budget.

Jones County Voter Registration Drops Over Quarter

Hospital Board asks city to pave streets near new memorial hospital
Stamford officials were urged by hospital board members to pave two streets around the new memorial hospital. J F West said bond and government funds cover building costs but not paving. The plan calls for a 30 foot by 1250 foot street on the north side and a 40 foot by 890 foot street at the rear with curb and gutter. The city would pay one third of the paving cost, no total estimate was available, and a decision would be announced later. Bobby Young Dies in Florida Plane Crash
Bobby W. Young was killed when his private plane crashed near the Okefenoke swamp in Florida while flying from Georgia to Houston. Graveside services were held locally, with burial in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Young, a 1956 Stamford High School graduate, attended Texas Tech and Houston law school and practiced law. He is survived by his wife Agatha Ellis, a son Kyle, four brothers, a sister, parents, and a grandfather.
