County Spelling Contest Slated Here March 14
The annual Jones County Spelling Bee will be held at Stamford High School on March 14 with representatives from most Jones County schools expected. Stamford High School student Martha Mayes is a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program ranking among the top 0.5 percent of U S high school seniors. Finalists are to learn April 23 who receives 1600 Merit scholarships or other awards, with some needs-based aid. Mayes, daughter of Mr and Mrs W F Mayes, plans to attend Texas Christian University and is active in Central Christian Church youth work and district Christian Youth Fellowship.
