Stamford residents packed the Roundup hall as R. G. Giles was chosen president of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce at last Friday's annual banquet. W. B. Tayman stepped down after a year, with Charles Markham named vice president and Frank Morrow re elected treasurer. New directors include Giles Markham and Ben Bagwell. local officers outlined defense and community progress, cadet entertainment, and a Unity theme for wartime effort.

About 150 people attended the Victory banquet at the First Baptist Church Tuesday night to celebrate completing the budget campaign and welcome Rev Iles B and wife. Guests included Rev and Mrs Hays and Mr and Mrs Harrison plus education director T R Harrison and wife. C M Lester opened with a comic song and the girls ensemble sang Fairest Lord Jesus and Have Thine Own Way before the pastor delivered the keynote address on Going Forward.

Stamford Junior and Senior high schools report 2800 dollars in defense bonds and stamps purchased by pupils and teachers up to last Friday morning. The student council conducted the survey and orders are taken each morning with stamps filled at noon. Kenneth Williams chairs senior high defense stamps and Peggy Sitton chairs junior high. The Monday sales totaled six dollars.

Walt Cousins Remembered In Dallas After Last Roundup
Walter H. Cousins a past president of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association died in a Dallas hospital. He was a longtime figure in West Texas rodeos and Dallas business circles, survived by a widow, children, siblings, and a grandson. He once published the Southern Pharmaceutical Journal and served as secretary of the State Board of Pharmacy. He lived in Vickery for 22 years. His obituary notes his poetry and his 1937 hope to build a living monument for cowmen at Stamford.

Dr Garry Cleveland Myers nationally known editor and educator will lecture in Stamford Friday under the P T A. His wife is hospitalized in Austin with a fractured knee. He arrives from Abilene and will speak to the Exchange Club at noon and at the high school auditorium in the afternoon. The time changes from 2 and 3 p m to 3 and 4 p m war time with roundtable discussions at 3 p m and the lecture at 4 p m. Stamford expects many visitors from nearby towns for the forum at the high school auditorium.

Rex Beard Spent Night Here After He Robbed Bank
Rex Beard a 19 year old gunman received 20 more years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing the First National Bank at Stamford for 3505 dollars last September 12. He already faced 45 years from 15 prior cases and this sentence was imposed after his Stamford bank robbery and related convictions in Bowie and Necona. Beard rode a bus from Abilene to Stamford hid clothes in a bush then robbed the bank and spent the night out of town before returning for breakfast and a bus ride back to Abilene.

Parnell Dies of Heart Attack at 56 in Stamford
W. H. Parnell aged 56 died at his Stamford home from a heart attack. Funeral services were set for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ with D. Lee Hukel officiating and burial in Highland Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Bella Scott Parnell, two daughters, six grandchildren, a brother and three sisters.
